Hi everyone, I am new to this board so please bear with me if this topic has been covered already. I have a 97 S1, had it for years think its great I do have a problem though, I have a large bubble under the lettering on the gas tank, told the dealer (UK) he said nothing can be done, is this correct??....thanks in advance Andy | ||

Andy, There was at one time a "Goodwill" upgrade or replacement policy in effect for the bubbling decals. Some people just pop the bubbles and smooth the decal back down. Some people pay for a new gas tank. Some people have an owner-friendly dealership nearby that will still honor the goodwill replacement gastank deal. Some people just remove the decals all together and then either leave the tank plain or repaint the tank and paint on the lettering or add new decals. This had something to do with either the porosity of the gas tanks, or the lack of porosity of the decals, or both, and the gas fumes get up under the decals and bubble it up. I don't know how factual any of this is, it's just my understanding of the situation. Your location in your profile is either not filled in or is hidden, but in your post I see you're probably in the UK. I have no direct knowledge of which are the good and which are not the good dealerships over there. There is a gentleman by the nickname of Rocket on the site here who is probably in your region and who would most likely have some input of the value of various dealers over there. Hence my disclaimer: "owner-friendly dealership".  Some dealerships are more customer and future business friendly than others. As in "give this customer a new gas tank in exchange for his old one and sell the old one for $20-$50 in the sidewalk sale costs less than $200 out of pocket and may generate much more than that in future business and goodwill and customer referrals", or something like that.  | ||

Daniel, they gave me a new one for the S1 and I was second owner and the bike had 28K miles. That was a couple years ago though. | ||

Andy: Welcome and ask away...we are here, but for that reason. First step: Visit with your dealer. Tell him you are aware there was, at one time, a program whereby Buell would replace the tank. Ask him/her if they will at least tender your request for goodwill to the Mothership. That's a very long shot. When you have done that, report back to us. Andy welcome. I have no experience of dealers in Slade country. Once upon a time I had great service from Just Harleys in Newcastle but not recently. There are scattered amongst the UK some great Buell people within the industry. The S2 exhaust is unique... Any others could cause interferance with the aircleaner... Also a different muffler would be needed... The S2 exhaust wraps around like the race exhaust and comes back on the left hand side instead of ending in the front... IE the engine exhaust bracket holds the exhaust not the muffler..... I have seen a early S1,M2 & S3 work but it is very close to the aircleaner and as I stated reqires a S1, M2 or S3 muffler.... | ||

It looks like I'm making a trip to E.PA next week. If any of you see a Blue '99 S3 from IA running around the Northeast make sure you wave. I'll be with a Kawasaki cruiser. We got a condo for the week in East Stroudsberg for $125. In fact I would bet if you wanted to meet up we could open some space. The guy who set it up said there are 8 beds there. I'll be away off & on until we leave Sunday morning but I'll check in and see if anyone is interested. | ||

Mike: Take Rt. 191 South out of Stroudsburg. 2-3 mile climb, with hairpins. Appalachain Trail at top. Also, Head east on I-80 across the bridge into NJ; just over bridge is a rest area. There are some decent hiking trails there that give good views of the Deleware river off of rocky outcroppings. | ||

Aaron, Yes, they used to goodwill any tank no matter what but they were finding that the same tanks were being resold and then another new one put on so they only will do it for original owners now. | ||

If the Rockies are your calling, you'll be disappointed. I spent a week in Crested Butte two years ago (summer), it was amazing. I'd move to Colorado in a heartbeat if I could convince the wife. | ||

wooooooooooooo, brought home my first buell 98 S1W with only 1700 miles(have owned a few harleys, but finally got the buell). Quick question... With my fatboys, you could hear the primary chain smack the case when it would get loose during the break in. I traveled 4 hours to get this bike. When I got there I heard what sounded to be a loose primary chain. I wanted the bike, so I took a chance. It didn't have a constant rhythem so I didn't think it was a rod or valve issue. At idle it sounds like somebody is taking a wrench and smacking it against the primary cover....advice? Please tell me I didn't buy a problem! Also, could somebody tell me how to adjust the primary on a 1200, or point me to an online resource. I don't have a local buell dealer, so I will be doing most of my own work. I really want to address it before I ride it much. Thanks! Danny | ||

Dwike: Welcome to the "buell side" There is an update primary chain tensioner available, and a ton of good info in the knowledge vault about the installation, care and feeding of the primary chain. Good luck with the new bike. | ||

Dwike, The best place to start is the Knowledge Vault. You can do key word searches and find just about all the information that you will need. You will also want to buy a service manual for your bike. You can start here (http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/Manuals/S1_1996-1997_Service/intro.pdf) for now. Also, call Buell Customer Service and have them run your VIN number to find out if any/all of the recall work has been done. Have fun. | ||

Dwike, check your front primary pulley also, these have been known to loosen. Mine on my '95S2 backed off and was rubbing on the inside of the primary cover. |
