In addition to what FMJ said, "made to burn SLOWER", the other part of the equation is it's formulated to resist detonation as the flame front travels through the combustion chamber. Ref wiki.

There is some evidence to support using higher octane may reduce performance in this article on race engines, 8th paragraph down. However for production engines, many Google articles say there is no detriment except to the wallet.

Read the link. The only part I found intriguing was this statement...

"Obviously, if the engine does not have proper compression to provide high combustion and temperature, then the octane fuel will not burn completely, resulting in power losses."

Not sure that's true, but if it were, it would explain why octane could hurt power. Not agreeing or disagreeing (yet), still on the fence.

Oh, for an evening with Kevin Cameron!

tomd: you quite likely have an ignition timing issue. i strongly recommend that you set the timing correctly. the procedure is detailed in the service manual.in lieu of the "digital technician" you can use a voltmeter at pin 3 on the grey ecm connector. yes, you CAN adjust your ignition timing, and NO your stock compression Buell should NOT ever require race gas.
on a related note: the octane rating units used in Europe are NOT the same measurements use in the states. different units. USA 87 octane is similar to Europe's 95 octane.

What happens if you raise the visor some?
What happens if a following car or bike has their high beams on?
It will be interesting to see real reviews of this system once people start using it.

FP, I thought that might be the case but Googling didn't find me anything to say so when I searched earlier. Thanks for that.

When we speak of higher than recommended octanes used possibly preventing power, can we assume this means that Super Unleaded blends (like Shell Optimax) AREN'T relying on octane boosting then, because these types of fuel CAN and DO produce more power / performance in many a given engine despite this or that engine being of ordinary performance?

I still can't find any credible evidence anywhere that supports 93 octane gasoline hurting power in an engine that runs fine on 87 octane. Lots of opinions and theories, though.

Still on the fence.

"In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "normal" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91 in Europe."

There is definitely an octane that is best for any given engine. I run 87 in my ST1100, 89 in my S-3 and my KTM. The DR-350 will burn kero if I start it on gasoline... oh, wait, that was a Gravely I once owned...
The obvious clue is pinging or rattling (Very Bad), but the second is mileage. My ST will get 50 mpg on 87, 45 on 89, and 42 on 91. Guess where my money goes?

Any idea what octane Honda used in their RC166 250 cc GP bike (six cylinders!)?

65; any higher it would misfire over 15,000 rpm (redline @ 22,000)

Wouldn't the best octane be the lowest that you could run without pinging? A slower burn with a too high of octane may send unburned fuel out the exhaust?

I had a 4-cyclinder mini-van that pinged on 87 octane (suggested by the owners manual). After checking timing and everything else, and being the cheapskate that I am, I decided to try a colder spark plug. Not only did it quit pinging but the gas mileage went up about 2mpg.

That's weird. A whole week has passed since someone last posted on the GDB. That's a first.

Are we that talkative in other threads these days that the GDB takes a back seat? Maybe we don't have much conversation left in us for 'generalizing'? Or is it perhaps the shift of contributors and their loyalties that leaves the GDB a quiet place? Hey, maybe it's just one of those freak times, and nuthin's wrong at all. Yeah, that must be it.

So Rocket how's it goin'? Are you planning on taking in the TT in 2007 the 100th? I would love to do it, can't see how I can afford to, the bike rental alone is easily $1000.
