Ferris , if my lazy assed scribbling was anywhere near as good as Walsh's, I'd be a bike Journo, but then I'd have to learn to ride a bike properly !!!!!

Aaron, it's so refreshing to find you in such great mood :)

Pete, you're alive ???

Roc, that statement would have scared me more if you said "wrecked at 192MPH, rider is ok". By the way, over here 'wrecked' means pissed or stoned - then I'd have fell off my chair !!

Henrik has the whole story. 200mph is well within this bike's reach, though. That 188 was at part throttle in 5th (it wanted to over-rev). We haven't done it yet, though, anything can still happen. We're anxious, put it that way, didn't sleep much. Henrik should have a more complete report for you directly.

My new favorite line from the Buell service manual for my '00 Cyclone (Page 2-62)...

"Do not operate vehicle with steering head locked. This will restrict the vehicle's turning ability which could result in injury or death".

Got a good laugh out of that one.

Can I throw in a quick technical question? ;-)

(I'll post this in the knowledge vault, too!)

Had some problems starting the "new" 2000 M2 Cyclone - felt like the battery was low, every time. So I hooked it on the charger, and after 4 hours at 1.5 amps it started fine.

Problem is, I can't figure out WHY the battery was dead even after a reasonably long ride. Do these bikes tend to lose their alternators (or generators or whatever they have)?

I hooked up my trusty VOM and found that the battery was at 13.4V while charging, dropped to 12.3V when the charger was disconnected and the lights/ignition are on, but only came up to 12.4V when I started the bike. I saw no increase in voltage taking the engine off idle.

Is it normal for these bikes to only show 12.4V when the engine is beyond idle? As soon as I shut if off, the battery dropped to 12.3V again, so I know there is SOME charging going on, but I suspect it's not enough.

Thanks for any advice and/or numbers off somebody else's M2 . . .

Oliver,
The service manual has some pretty good procedures for testing the various components of the charging system. That said, how old is the battery? I'd replace that before you started worrying about the other components.

Hey Josh,

It's the original MY 2000 battery. Having had bikes for 18 years, I'm pretty "intuitive" on these, and I know that once they get drained all the way it's usually too late - but per the PO, that's never happened to this one.

Also, it WILL take 6 amps of charge if I supply it and it sat patiently at the 1.5A level for several hours, which I normally take as an indication that it has SOME useful amount of charge available.

But you're right, I should try a known good one. Does anyone know if the Blast battery is the same as the M2 version? Is this a standard size? (I don't have the manuals . . . )

TIA

You should be getting over 14 volts at the battery with the engine reving above idle, from experience......the regulator/rectifier has packed in. But don't quote me!!

Oliver,
I done a lot of trouble-shooting on strange electrical problems on Sportys and Buells.
I've never had it not be the battery.
But (like Mark said and others will testify to) the rest of the setup (stator, regulator, wiring harness) can go bad.

XB9R---XB9S---XB9SW ?
What do you think? In the begining we had the RS ,then RR and some years later we got the thunderBOLT followed by the lightning and the best yet the White lightning. What i am getting at here is that i think history is repeating its self--fireBOLT,lightning and could we possibly seeing a new whitelightning? (aka more horsepower) From what i understand the current horsepower is restricted due to EPA (emissions)

Just my misc. ramblings.

Beavis,
Your history is off a bit.

First we had the RR, then the RS/RSS, then the Thunderbolt. :)

BTW-Keep up the good work at Speedvison.

How far is Laporte, TX from San Antonio?

i never was that great with history, i am more of a here and now kind of guy. The SPEED thing is kind of slow now that Fox is in the drivers seat. (only did two events this year) i do more work with SCCA PRO on the WORLD CHALLENGE. LaPorte is east of Houston between Deerpark and Baytown. (it is any where from 2 to 4 hours depending on traffic and or what i am driving.)

Oliver,
I had a similar problem with my X1. At times I thought the battery was the problem, but it turned out to be the voltage regulator the first time and the second time one of the wires going to the vreg had slipped loose at the connection due to how it had been routed at the dealer. Definitely check your battery, which you should be able to have the dealer or an auto parts store do, and then I would suspect the voltage reg or wiring involved.

Sounds like you need a regulator. I just replaced mine because of the same problem. The output should jump up over 13 when you rev it up.
Good luck,

Yep...a solid 203 miles per hour! I can barely breath....
They had a day of waiting for hours. After losing 7 miles per hour on the back up run(everyone was slower) Aaron decided to go for it(with the NO2). And as we all know whatever Aaron sets his mind to...
Richard road the beast for all it's glory. It's a wonder that the big grin he had on his face didn't cause more wind drag.
The back up run is in the morning. I know the event will be a success for Team Elves.

I can't think of a better day I have had in a while. This more than makes up for the fun I missed in September. YAH-flippin-HOO!!!

Hiya ALL..

I'm the proud new papa of a XB9S...Just picked it up this AM..... The S-3 is history... as good as it was, my initial evaluation is it (S3) can't hold a candle to the 9S... Just put 70 quick miles on her (keeping her below 3k RPM)... Smooooooth would be the keyword here... It's very easy to ride fast.... At this point I'd have to say I'm exctatic<sp?>....

here some quick pics of the new family member....
