My best to you and yours' gnome. I hope all are healed.

Post Script. I spend most of my time in the Old School Buell or Quick Board section of this discussion board and I'd just like everyone to know that it is posts like these - good will directed to Gnome and his family- along with the firsthand Buell tech knowledge that make coming to Badweatherbikers a joy. Buell ownership and the comaraderieof said ownership are the reasons why I come here. The infighting and malice of some posts can really take their toll and at times make coming here less of a pleasure. Thanks to all of you.

Ebear - I can't imagine experiencing loss like you have. I hope you're finding peace and healing in midst of your pain. I'm counting my blessings to still have him among the living. And I do tell him (and all my loved ones) that I love them. Life's too short.

Wardan - I couldn't agree more.

There's something about the kindness of strangers and the fellowship of suffering that restores my faith in humanity. Thanks everyone!

No World Finals at Bonneville this year, it's been cancelled too.

I'm bummed, and pissed, but mostly bummed.

I know it's nothing compared to the tragedy and suffering of others right now, because it's not a tragedy or suffering, but still...

I'm bummed.

So I'm riding to work this morning when I realize that today is October 4th. I purchased my 12R on October 2nd of '03 meaning I've now owned the bike for two years and two days. More importantly, that reminds me that my insurance expired two days ago . . . and I have yet to receive any notification from my insurance company. Even more important than that I'm reminded of when I spoke to someone from my insurance company not long ago and they mentioned that they didn't handle motorcycle coverage any more and that the policy would have been transferred, except I'm sitting here with no coverage. I've tried calling the two numbers I have for my insurance company, but it appears they're not open yet.

So now I sit in fear. Why fear? Because I live in North Carolina, what I have recently discovered is the state of insurance hell. Buell coverage is extremely expensive here. I was paying ~$1100/year to cover my Firebolt--and that was the lowest premium I could find. Progressive wanted ~$2500/year with a $1k deductible and including a multi-vehicle discount. I called the special Harley insurance broker that's supposed to find the best motorcycle rates and they only knew of one company that would even insure Buells in NC and that was the company I was already with. I checked with Dairyland, they don't cover motorcycles in NC.

My bike is financed, I still owe about $4k on it. That means I'm required to have full coverage on the bike, which I don't have right now. I have no idea what happens when the bank finds out I don't have insurance on the bike. On the other hand, if the insurance company didn't bother to notify me that the policy was going to lapse then they likely didn't notify the bank so the bank may not yet know that my bike isn't covered. I know the DMV monitors this type of stuff and I know they like to hand out fines for lapses in coverage. For all I know I may already have one of those in the mail. Either way, I'm on borrowed time and I need to find an insurance policy soon. The bigger problem is that my budget is cooked. I simply cannot afford to pay any more than I already was paying for insurance. Fines wouldn't help either. If my only option is a $2500 policy I'll have to sell the bike.

Any ideas?

Spike -- yessir -- call your homeownewr/renter's carrier, your auto carrier, any incsurance company that has business with you -- offer siad carrier all your insurance bidness, and ask what their best deal is --

if it's not to your liking, call an independant agent, and have the same conversation --

if ya spend a liltteltime researching, and are willing to shift all your insurance business to the same carrier, you'll like;ly get a better deal

Why is bike insurance so expensive in NC?????
I'd be tempted to move over that if I lived there.
All I can suggest is trading the bike off for one that isn't so high on insurance, some web sites regularly post lists of "sleepers" that still perform but are not on the insurance company's high-risk lists. For example an M2 is generally considered a standard, but an S2 sometimes slips into a higher risk category even though it is lower power in stock trim.

Apart from somehow paying the bike off, or transferring the loan to an unsecured loan or credit card, I don't have any other suggestions.
Hmmm, what's the comparison between your current bike payments + insurance payments versus the payments on a higher-rate credit card? Probably not the smartest option, but if you don't want to relocate it might be an option.

You can get some Progressive right now, then when you find cheaper cancel Progressive. they do charge a bit to cancel. You may want to look them up.

It's not surprising that this is happening. Gearhead was telling me the other day that our local Suzuki/Kawasaki shop gets half of their crotch-rockets back wrecked.
We had a 45 year-old die last weekend, he crashed standing up on his seat with his arms crossed while running down rural I35. There was no mention of how fast he was going but the limit is 70 there.
It's a shame, but as long as people ride bikes irresponsibly and crash them, we all have to pay. Both monetarily and with our image too.

IF you had been making payments on the bike instead of buying that insane level of "insurance" then you would own that bike by now. consider purchasing the bike, you may find insurance to be a bit cheaper when you are insuring your own interest and not the banks.

yeah, Progressive ins plays a real fun game i call bait and switch, first they give a real attractive rate quote, then at renewal your rate jumps slightly over double. they DO run some cool print ads though, so at least you know how they spend some of your premium.

NC motorcycle, not just Buells, is cost prohibitive if there's a lien on your bike. I don't know why it's like that, but it is. If there's no lien you can get a mucho-cheapo policy -- which is all cool until you wad your UltraClassicFatKingGlide up like a pretzel.

I've got the house, 5 cars, 3 bikes, and if I had to have full-coverage on a 2002 M2 it'd be $1100.00 per year and everything is with the same insurance company.

YMMV, but not by very much if you're in NC.

My renewal rate has been steadily declining through the years with Progressive. The thing is, my deductible is more than anything that could happen to the bike, save for a totalled bike...and if it were totalled, they still wouldn't cover all the $$ in mods. I'm thinkin' about dropping down to minimum coverage. The worst possible scenario is a bent frame...and even then it wouldn't be terribly expensive to replace. I've never made a claim with them, that's why they love me. I don't need them...that's why I hate them.

Update:

After half a dozen and insurance quotes, one payoff attempt, and two attempts to sell the bike, I have finally come across "reasonable" insurance. I'm now covered by Viking insurance for $1054/year, which is about $800 less than the closest quote.

Thanks for the help.

Libality in NC is the same for all companies writing insurance in the state ($175 +/-) per year.

Full coverage is completely out of site. Four (4) different companies quoted 975 - 11-- per year for an 06 Ulyesses.

Thanks
