Buellblast - rear rocker box. Does you boot look like this? Combat Touring My S1 and a Mexican restaurants dirt parking lot are helping me break in my new boots. Thank you Aerostich!

Jim - beautiful!

Come on, Blake; you stay away from the women wherever you go (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Buellblast,
I'm assuming that you're on a blast....A gal friend of mine just had the rocker box leak as well. Pretty easy to fix, but you have to pivot the engine front down (thanks, Aaron!), which means pulling the muffler to support the engine. If that's what yours needs, get the manual and go for it.

5 days after I fix her bike, she comes back with oil all over her bike. Turns out, she wasn't checking the oil after being fully warmed up, and kept adding a bit more. Once the over full system gets warmed/pumped up, it was oozing past the cap,and dripping down onto the rocker box cover and head from above (for you tubers out there, the blast oilfiller cap is right behind the headstock). Fact is, I'm even wondering if it had a rocker box leak the first time, but the gasket was crispy and now it has a james metal set in.

Anyway, I'm not saying that that is or isn't your problem, just thought it worthwhile to write. I've heard of lots of overfilled buells. On an S1/S3 it all seems to end up on the rear end (and tire!). On the blast, it all happens in front (and ON) you.

Al

Fine Team Elves Textiles (tm) have arrived in Philadelphia. I've spent the last 3 days ripping the (collapsing) roof off my garage and putting a new one on just so i can lock up the S2 and Blast while I'm away at Bonneville without worrying about it. Gotta love old houses.

New S1WL owner questions.
The petcock isn't vacuum-operated like the Sportsters? Do I always need to remember to turn it off?
Was there a recall on the factory clip-ons?
Anyone know the stock suspension settings?

Hey Blake, per our muffler-for-race header discussion, this has a 4" automotive Supertrap on its race header ;)

Thanks,
Josh

Congrats on the S1W!

No. Yes.

No such a thing as factory clip-ons. They did recall the "Pro-series" bars though.

Yes. But not me.

Damn. I always forget the petcocks. My dad used to let me ride his 90 FLCH and I'd always forget to turn it "on." It would have enough gas to get out on the road before dying - just within range to hear him yell "amature" ;)
Yeah that's it "Pro-Series" Maybe I'll check the archives.

Hey Aaron, I'm catching up...

Bomber,
All went as well as can be. Only real mishap was a break-in. Some scumbucket busted out the rear passenger window around 4:15am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. The alarm spooked him/them. They'd already hit 4 or 5 other cars in the resort lot. Nothing taken from our's though. Plus I waited around until the Sheriff arrived and gave a description of someone hanging around across the street and who ditched across the lot in the woods when the sheriff first went past. Pretty sure they'll get the guys. The locals all are fairly certain who it is also.

Saw a wolf in Montana, a somewhat-friendly or un-shy coyote by the guyser in Yellowstone that someone thought was our dog that got loose from us, all kinds of moose and elk and buffalo/Bison, and one Mountain Goat on a bluff overlooking the freeway in western Montana. Weather was fair for the most part, missed the fire in the Black Hills by Rushmore by a day, one harsh thunder storm in NE Wyoming, and some fog on the coast of Washingtom. Would have made a nice bike trip if I didn't have so much gear to carry in the truck. Both the roads I've been on now over the BigHorn mountains are nice bike roads if the traffic isn't heavy.

Only saw maybe three Buells on the road the whole trip, and hardly any bikes at all between the Missouri river and the Pacific Ocean. Guess all the riders were mostly done for the season, or else they were getting ready for Bonneville or still recovering from Sturgis.

Oh well, enough rambling, back to work.
MikeJ.

Court,
The security folks at the airport must really love it when you travel. Unless those are the new improved saddle bags for the KLR and you're riding to the Salt.

Pelican does some nice work, if that's what those are.

Pics will follow once developed. Patience, and once scanned in I'll give a full (well, fairly full) report in the appropriate section of the site.

ps, I think I'd early-ordered a couple of LSR t-shirts but was otherwise mentally distracted and misplaced an email a few weeks ago, if the order follow-upper cares to recontact me...

Looking at purchacing my first Buell, a 99 S3T with 28k mi on the clock, and an obnoxious Vance and Hines muffler. I've already noted that the left side hardbag back is cracked to the dealer who's 'looking into it.' Dunno if that means I can take the replacement cost out of the bike or if he's going to get it replaced while it sits in the used bin. I'm coming from an 85 Honda V65 Sabre that I've done hefty tweaking to, so I've got some odd requests/questions.

1 - Anyone have a suggestion for a taller set of bars, and how long does it take to change them? I'm 5' 11" and looking to sit bolt upright.

2 - Whats a good aftermarket exhaust system to drop in, the Vance and Hines is all volume and no character, the opposite of what I'm looking for.

3 - Passenger floorboards, anyone bothered? I know the HD spec ones on my Sabre will bolt right up no mods needed, just not sure if there is enough room for them to fold up so I can access the kickstand when needed. Is there any form of centerstand available (the kind that mounts to the bike and goes with it, not a service stand)?

4 - How do people like the Zero Grav taller replacement windshield?

5 - This is the first year of EFI on the S3T afik, and it showed on my test ride. At low speeds in 1st and 2nd the bike hunted BADLY but cleared up with some revs. Whats the recomended fix and how hard/bad is it to revert the bike to carb fed?

6 - What should I be looking for before I purchace to avoid gotchas down the road, or to make me wait for annother S3T to come around, and what should I be doing for upgrades once I get it?

1) Make sure it has the "T" bars. If it does, try risers but sitting bolt upright sucks at speed. I went from a Sportster with buckhorns (bolt upright) to a S3T and man is the S3Ts slightly forward position better for everything.

2) Try a full race kit. All character and designed for the bike.

3) no, and no

4) it's great, really kicks the wind blast up.

5) get the full race kit. the Race ECM fixes all the running problems.

6) I would be looking for curvey roads and a willing passanger. For upgrades see 2) and 5) ;)
