Aaron, Galileo was imprisoned. interrogated, and they broke his health. The price for being right when the arrogantly ignorant are in power. His reputation has been rehabilitated by modern science and also by the institution that defamed and broke him - 500+ years too late, though.

Blake, EXCELLENT dissertation on riding comfort! I can second the comment on the pink foam ear plugs. They're made by North, they're called "Ultra Noise Husher Foam Ear Plugs," and they damp noise by 31 dB. Also, if MrX has a Buell that has those cushy rubber footpegs, I highly recommend he swap them out for something more functional. I bought the adjustble alloy pegs from a H-D dealer back when they were reasonably priced (and not chromed) and I swear by them. One thing more: I read an excellent article on this subject in Motorcycle Consumer News some years ago, and grips with a barrel shape (larger in the middle than on either end) were highly recommended to conform to the natural curverature of the hand. I bought some foam grips shaped like that, and they have made a world of difference.

Peter with regards to your post of 08/22, much warmer with wrapped headers.

Several of my customers, who had previously been running wrapped headers, commented that they felt much less heat after we coated their headers inside & out with CERMAKROME. CERMAKROME is a thermal barrier coating that maintains its chrome like appearance almost forever as apposed to which looks pretty tattered in time. I do not know of anyone coating in the Amersdam area. However I do know that Cam Coat Coatings in England uses the same products my company does. You can contact them at www.camcoat.u-net.com.

I intend making another set in the future which I plan to coat. This set I made from old headers and I was unable to get a finished weld to the standard I wanted due to contamination of the tubing. The boost tube I welded from new pieces and I'm happy enough with how it turned out, so I've stopped blaming myself .
I was going to thermal coat the pistons, until I talked with a well known engine builder. He suggested that coating them prevented them working as a heatsink, so the chance of detonation increased.

Neil: Welcome to Atlanta, one of my favorite areas to ride in.

Just a note of Buell history, the FIRST organized Local Buell Riders Group was in Atlanta (technically, Marietta) and was organized by one of the prettiest riders ever to carve a curve on a Red S2, Alison. Her and her husband, David (an avid Triumph) rider are wonderful folks. I went there a couple times to share tea (remember you MUST specify "sweetened" or "unsweetened" in Atlanta or they'll stare at you like you have the plauge).

You're gonna love it and I'll let you in on a secret....you are a hop, skip and a jump from some of the best twisties in the nation. And I do not mean Deal's Gap. The Gap is a nust see, but largely a Disney-Trap for motorcyclists and it's very dangerous due to the comingling of bikes.

Your source is only partially correct. Yes a properly applied thermal barrier coating does prevent the piston from acting as a heat sink, it also prevents the piston from transfering excess heat to the oil & fouling the incoming charge. When heat is transfered from the heat sinking piston to the incoming mix the mix begins to expand at a time when you are first trying to get the largest, coolest volume of air and fuel into the chamber, and the trying to compress it. The result is loss of efficiency, as a lesser volume of the mix is drawn into the chamber and the mix is expanding while the piston is still rising, trying to compress it. this not only takes power, but may verry quickly lead to detonation. Basicly by not retaining excess heat in the piston and chamber you are able to flush it out the exhaust on the exhaust stroke.

The main business of our company is building racing and performance engines. Vertually every part of an engine can benefit from the proper choice and application of coatings. Our experience and testing along with that of others has shown lower part, oil and cooling system temperatures, increased part longevity and more power. Please excuse the long winded reply but I have seen the results of coating and believe in them. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

it looks like my m2 is going into long term storage for a few years (i'm moving to hong kong)... and i was just noticing that tripp is having certain issues that i would like to avoid... any suggestions on what i should do to keep my cyclone happy on blocks?

I'm running a turbo through an intercooler on my S1, so the loss of efficiency is not so much of a problem, as is heat not being removed. However, I can also accept your idea on the heat being blown out the exhaust.
More food for thought then, what happens to piston fit if it's been designed to hold a certain amount of heat to obtain it's correct shape?
Feel free to sell me on the benefits in regard to a turbo engine, but if you know of any downsides to it, please feel free to also let me know those .

I'd rekindle the fight over on LABUSA if I could get Aaron to back me. What happened last time is I ran out of knowlege pretty quickly and had to resort to vile rhetoric. I really needed competent help with the technical stuff, I threw out 'Boyle's Law', and got some quick respect, but when pressed by the pros I had to admit I didn't have a clue. My credibility slipped pretty badly at that point.

Flapjack, what is the durablity of the coatings you speak of? Suitable only for racing engines that get torn down on a regular basis, or also suitable for daily riders that only get torn down when they eventually fail?

The "Daytona Boss" is made by Stainless Specialties out of Sebastion Florida. I had one on my 00 M2 from the day I got it. Sounds great and has plenty of bark on the road.

It came about as a response to putting a forcewinder intake on a X1.

Several others I know have recently put one on thier carb'd bikes as well and like it. Beware there are some issues about its mounting. check the archives for further info.

Put nearly 300 miles on the S1 today. Slightly roasted thigh and a semi-tired posterior. Just getting to know the beast today. Definitely different from the M2!

Jeez Blake, can I head the list ? I thought I'd bought my third Harley, and you say it's called a what, Buell ? Weird !!!!!

Ah yes glowing heads indeed. There I was facing a slight problem of having weld all the way around the front motor mount on the front head. So I thought to myself, why not repaint 'em a different colour. Ferrari Red came to mind instantly, as in Testa Rosa - 'Red Head', but I thought it too corny. Anyway, I was only trying to add more red to match the battery but in the back of my mind I kept thinking Yellow Head, Yellow Head, so off I went to the paint shop to look at some chips. Ferrari's Gialo Fly was not the best of yellows and I couldn't call it a Testa Gialo Fly could I :) so I opted for a British Standard yellow in the end. Nothing fancy in the way of paint either. Just two pack and laquer, and it's holding up really well, or was !!

I am new to the board and to Buells. I've been a Harley Sportster and Electra Glide rider for the last 5 years but needed a little more to satisfy sensory desires. I just bought a '98 S3T that is totally stock and wnat to do what seems to be the norm for Harley engines and let it breath. Can you point me in the right direction for putting together a dependable setup to allow this? Maybe someone has a Intake and pipe setup they are ready to pass on inorder to move up. I am not to proud to put used parts on my machine if they perform. I look forward to learning and sharing over the coming months and years. Thanks in advance.

Saeanddte, most if not all of the info you're looking for is in the archives of the Knowledge Vault. Recommend you start with the area you want to focus on first (i.e., Intake and Carburetion, Breathers, Exhaust) and read the entire archive on that subject. There's such a wealth of knowledge there, you'll just be astounded. One tip: If you're pretty certain that your bike has the origial primary chain tensioner on it, installing the much stronger new tensioner should be very close to the top of your list.
