José_Q: Looks like HDI has a pretty good quarterly report going. This causes me to give two valuable pices of investment advice to anyone on the BadWeB with a few extra $$ to play with.

1) If HDI goes below $40, BUY IT!!!!
HDI

2) Investment Advice

If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00.

With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drunk all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 5 cent deposit, you would have $107.00.

Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

I do know that Ducati's numbers were hurt last year because they could not sell the 600 Monster in California last year.

ergo the 620ie was introduced.

we'll see what that model does to help Ducati.

To all XB owners,

There was a race kit shown at the dealer show. It includes a dual-outlet muffler, an ecm and a filter all for a retail price of around $619. Saw it in the accessory booklet.

Keep in mind that when the factory reports the number of sold units that this does not mean to the public. It means that they have been sold to Dealers.

Tail lites over the curb is another story.

Question for anyone that might be able to answer.

I bought a brand new 2001 Buell S3T from a NW dealer that had a V&H slip-on muffler already installed on the bike (everything else was stock). I have owned the bike for 15 days and out of that 15 day the bike has been in the shop for 13 of them.

The dealership could not figure out why the bike would not idle correctly, why it would shut its self down at freeway speeds, why the bike felt like it was pulling a 20' boat behind it (no power what so ever, very unlike a Buell) and why it would spit, sputter, back fire and hesitate.

Today, I was called by this shop and informed that they have replaced the V&H muffler that I purchased with the bike, with the stock (D-9 Cat) muffler and now the bike runs as a Buell should.

I am really confused by this, would a V&H slip-on muffler make a 2001 Buell S3T run so poorly that it couldn't even be ridden on the road?

Because it was WAY TOO LEAN.

Think of your engine as an air pump, which is basically what it is.

You increased the amount of AIR that could escape the engine with the V&H. But there are two more things that need to do to keep the system balanced: 1. The air coming in and 2. the gas that will be mixed with that air.

The same amount of AIR is entering the STOCK airbox, and the STOCK ECM is squirting out the STOCK/EPA LEGAL amount of fuel to mix with that AIR which is leaving the Bike through the muffler faster than it really wants it to.

So you need to balance the whole setup. Increase the amount of AIR coming in, get the race ecm to SQUIRT more GAS to mix with that increased AIR, and THEN let it go out the better flowing V&H pipe.

Aaron, is that close to accurate?

JQ,

That close, but since this is FI with an ECM it should have learned to correct the lean condition with the various sensors.

On the bike though.

1. Get the RaceECM.

2. I think you need to drive the bike for a little while at around 2500 rpm (constant) to let the Stock or Race ECM learn the current environmental conditions. That may not have been done with the V&H.

3. Get the Race ECM.

4. Ask that Servicing Dealer is they have the right modules for the Buell Diag on the ECM.

5. Get the Race ECM.

Arvel.

Did I mention to get the race ECM.

JimmyC:

In answer to your question... "Would a V&H slip-on muffler make a 2001 Buell S3T run so poorly that it couldn't even be ridden on the road?"

The answer is an emphatic "NO!". I'd like to know who your dealership is.

Sounds to me like something in the fuel injection system was not working/disconnected or was improperly set/calibrated. First suspect would be the TPS followed by the Oxygen sensor.

I would ask them to recheck the TPS/ECM calibration BY THE BOOK. They should put your V&H can back on the bike, and get it running properly.

Did they give you the V&H muffler and all required bracketry? If so, go ahead and remount it, drive the bike at a steady speed for a few miles, it should run fine.

The race ECM will give you a big boost to midrange power and eliminate the EPA mandated over-lean condition at low revs and cruising speeds. I would have one installed set for TPS calibration asap. You will be happy you did.

Let us know what happens.

Blake,

That is what I thought and that is what the factory (Buell) has told me. The dealership that I have been dealing with is Latus Motors in Portland, Oregon.

Latus has been attempting to get the bike running correctly since July 5th (bought the bike July 2nd) with the V&H on the bike (installed by Latus).

Latus claims that they have reset the TPS/ECM calibration multiple times to factory spec and have also tried using the Race ECM. They said that when they installed the Race ECM, the bike would not run at all! They also claim that they have replaced the O2 sensor.

So now where I am with the bike is this, Latus has pulled the V&H muffler off the bike. Replaced it with the stock unit and claims the bike is running, as it should be. They will not re-install the V&H and have pretty much told me that if I don’t like it, I can get my 10,000.00 cash back from them that I paid for the bike or just live with it! I have yet to test the bike since most of this work was done last night, after I left their shop.

I have requested they provided me with the V&H muffler because I did purchase it with the bike when I bought the bike on the 2nd. Latus was very reluctant to agree to this, Said that they have furnished us with another muffler and they should be able to keep the V&H.

Talk about frustrating!

Thanks to all that have repled to my posting.

Damn! They can't figure it out and they want to keep what you paid for? I would take the offer to get your money back, because it sounds like they are both incapable and unwilling to provide you with decent service.

Not a good first impression in my eyes. If you are willing stick it out and try the race ECM, remember that you may have to bring it back to them for other issues.

Do you have enough confidence that they can fix your bike as needed? I bought my bike at one place then switched to another dealer for parts and service, because I felt more confident and liked their willingness to help.

Good luck either way.

I'd get my money back and buy from a dealership that actually understands and can competently work on Buells.

Or ask for $$ back, like $2000. Then check the intake seals, throw on a race ECM (right José?)and have another dealership set the TPS and check timing.

Here's my current situation, the symptoms sounds familiar to JC's, I hope someone could see a pattern. Mine is an '01 X1 with race everything installed. Prior to its 10k check up, I noticed that there was a slight flat spot around 3.2k to 3.7k rpm (all gears). As 10k miles approaches, the bike would backfire and/or cough at around the mentioned rpm ranges, some days nothing would happen as I would be running all over town, work, school, and errands, constant freeway speed or stop and go traffic in 80+ temp. At other days, even after a warm up, the bike would act up at least once a day. Occasionally, the engine light would light, but once I revved past 3.7k rpm, it would go out. I was not able to duplicate the problem no matter how much I tried.

A couple of days prior to its service appointment, the bike started acting up really bad, with an additional rough or no idling problem. At stoplight I would have to keep a slight pressure on the throttle to keep it alive. The engine light would flicker with increasing frequency, but would go out once past revved past 3.7k rpm. On the day before its appointment, the bike would start but would not idle or idle very rough, from below 1k rpm up to 1.5k rpm. On throttling up to get moving, the bike would surge, sometimes lightly, sometimes with enough power I would have to grip and hang on, must have look like an idiot. The shop changed the eng temp sensor along with the 10k service. For a week, I got power all over the rpm range, like night and day. Then last week on the way to work, I got caught in stop and go traffic on the freeway at 90+ degree afternoon temp. It took me an hour and a half to go 22 miles to work. During that time in traffic, the engine would rhythmically surge from normal idle to 1.2k rpm. I understood that this was normal as the rear cylinder runs hotter than the front. No eng light. Once I got moving at freeway speed and idling for a while at work, the bike sounded normal. I was going home in the AM when after a couple miles down the road the bike backfire once, when I let off the throttle to downshift to 4th, it died. I coasted off the road, stopped and restarted. The idle problem came back and I lost power throughout the entire rpm range, the bike would cough, sputter all the way home, no engine light. I took it to the shop the same day when they opened that AM. The engine light does work, I made sure to notice when the key was turned.

As of yesterday, the shop told me they were waiting for a call back from Buell, they duplicated the problem, and told me they could not figured out why it was running rich. I'm not sure if the hot day temp has anything to do with it, and I definitely don't understand how, after sitting 14 hrs at work, the bike's problem would return overnight. Would NOT calibrating the TPS after the eng temp sensor change cause this problem ? If the ET sensor was bad, would it cause the O2 sensor to go bad ? Would a stock O2 sensor be a fix, or should I go for a better O2 sensor, if one does exists ?

This was a 4 day weekend for me, and I'm cooped up in my apt. and bummed out. The bike has been running good for a year. Thanks for any info.

Roderick

Jimiyc, and others: A friend of mine has a web page (http://www.hawgeye.com/sd.htm) which allows for people to post both good and bad experiences at any H-D/Buell dealer.

This website has gotten the attention of many dealerships, some asking that he shut it down. Others threatening to sue. You could post your experience there if you'd like.

Later,

Scott,

Looking at that site, I completely concur with HD of Danbury. Great parts and service people. Did not buy the bike there, but when I was looking at the Vrod for the first time ever, not really interested, they said nearly $22K.

People pay the price though for the priviledge. I bet they overpay at restaurants and for gas too.

Please also share your dealer experiences on the BadWeB Dealer Ratings page. It's in the knowledge vault. Our forum allows dealers a chance ot respond in real time. I think that's an advantage over the edited and prepared format of the site mentioned above. Some of the gripes there are really petty too.

Thanks,
