Ah yes, I am still Intermediate for NESBA. The Southeastern NESBA control riders are pretty quick down there. I attempted to get bumped on numerous occasions but simply gave up trying to find the same control rider over and over. It was much more satisfying to my ego to take names in the "I" group anyway. There was maybe 2 guys running quicker than me and both were on liter bikes. For reference I was turning low 1:45's at Barber. My best was a 1:45.23. Not blazing fast but good enough to run expert and not be the slowest guy on the track.

I only run Barber with NESBA. My home club, Team ProMotion, I run Blue Group or Expert and was asked to start coaching during my last day. That should be a pretty awesome experience as well as making my track time much more affordable.

I'm not kidding you. The guy on that S1 was doing pretty well out there. At least he wasn't annoying me by parking it in the turns, unlike the majority of liter bike jockeys. He took consistent lines and was wringing that thing's neck. A Buell just doesn't have the legs on the track. I'm tellin ya's.

And finally, Dave get your butt off that seat and your knee on the ground.

P.S. You'll all be glad to know that Mr. Barber has an EXSTENSIVE collection of Buells including 2, count em, 2 RR1000s. He also has an RR1200, RS1200, RSS1200, S2, and several XB examples. Oddly enough I didn't see an S1, S3, M2, or X1.

The history in that museum alone is worth the trip.

My knee is on the ground later in that turn.
The photographers just took the picture too soon. Just pitching it into the curve there.
Plenty of people here that were there to verify.
I couldn't go as fast thru there as usual with all the traffic ahead of me. That is my best corner on the track and where I did most of my passing.
That's the corner I passed Dyna on his R1. In his defense it was after his crash and I think he was going a little easy thru there.

Have you started coaching yet? How is it?
The guy that runs Private Track Time wanted me to do some coaching but I just want to go and ride. I don't want to turn it into work.

That's the corner I passed Dyna on his R1. In his defense it was after his crash and I think he was going a little easy thru there.

Thanks Dave but you & I both know you're a much better track rider than I am. I do ok but definitely got spooked between the lowside & with the way the rear tire was just getting real greasy feeling. Still havemt replaced it yet but I do have the replacement out in the garage. Been doing some burnouts with the old one & its really trashed now: D

Coaching is difficult. It's difficult to ride a good line slower than you normally would. I was actually on the Pocono back straight doing 40mph waiting for bikes to catch up to me. It was weird.

The other weird part is corner entry. You don't realize it after you've become used to track riding. But the beginner groups think fast is going WFO in the straights, braking extremely early to scrub off speed, and then parking it in the turn. There is a spreading out / melee of riders at every corner. A nice line of bikes turns into a big, spread out pack at the turn and you're job is to hold a consistent line through it.

I think coaching and riding in the beginner and intermediate groups is infinitely more dangerous than riding expert. When I was at Barber last week I felt the same way. It's not the speed that's dangerous, it's the less than consistent riding of others.

With NESBA they require that you only pass on the outside of turns in Intermediate which really had me nervous. But by day two I was taking names with outside passes and just getting them over as quickly as possible. Although, a 929 crashed just as I was showing him a wheel through the Alabama Roller Coaster. That was close. A cool head and the good reactions I've apparently developed saved my butt.

Dave:

Coaching, instructing, whatever you call it is a blast. I love it because it really forces me to pay attention to and think about everything. Also, I love the obscene amount of track time I get.

I'll usually instruct in the Novice group all day long. I'll also ride in the intermediate group, mainly policing for eratic riding; but also instructing there. Finally, Expert group is usually for my own pleasure. Sometimes I'll work with an expert who just needs help in a corner or tow and sometimes I'll pull someone from B to A to work on something.

I ride just about to the point of dropping. I'll run A group then C. Then I'll run B and C, then half of a and half of B then C or whatever mix of that all day long.

It's especially rewarding working with faster B group riders and prepping them for A group.

Not needing superior suspension performance is kinda like not needing ABS brakes or a seat-belt in your car. All else being equal, a front suspension with significantly less unsprung weight will hold grip significantly better over uneven surfaces on account of it will let the tire maintain significantly more consistent contact with the road surface.

Ditto for crisper handling. Until you need it, you don't need it. I guarantee that in a panic obstacle-avoidance situation, the XB's perform superior to other more conventional motorcycles.

Blake...tires were pretty well shot before the track day & I should have replaced them before I hit the track..even brought the new one with me but never put it on. Was breaking it loose quite a bit in the corners..almost 5000 miles on it & 2 track days already so it was shot.

Anyways we were about 3 laps into a session when another rider came in on the inside of turn 1 & forced me way wide, tried to scrub some speed off to stay off the grass & keep it up right but the track gods decided not to let that happen. Almost went into a highside but managed to save that but then I ended up lowsiding. Watched Dave almost run me over but thank god it was him & he knows what the hell he is doing & he simply went into the grass & kept his bike upright. I watched my bike spin & slide on its right side for a bit & as soon as I stopped sliding I picked it up & continued on my way. Only damage was the frame sliders got ground down..just as they are supposed to & a tiny scratch on the tailsection..thats it.

Did 2 more sessions but the tire was getting worse & worse so I just called it a day.

Smash Mouth will be at Seca Saturday night facing the hillside below Fox camping area....6:00 to 7:30...Looks like we will have to ride the bikes into town after(or before!)the final race and hitch a ride back just to have them prominently displayed at Cannery Row!!

Speaking of Laguna Seca, I have a camp sight reserved that i'm not going to use, it's in the Archery area. The wife and I decided to camp along the coast at Big Sur. i knew i was gonna regret moving home to Ny from Carmel-by-the-sea before laguna.
if you camp on rt.1, you can just set up at monastery beach in carmel, just north of big sur. CHP is cool w/camping along 1, just a 3-night limit per spot.
no big...you just move down the hwy a few yards and you're fine...
great hwy camping at garapatta state park beach pullover, (that's my grandpa's houselights you see up on the hill). piece of heaven there.
when in downtown monterey, hit the "turtle bay taqueria" on tyler, (next to alvarado) kickass wild-caught salmon wraps (HUGE slab of meat) for $7.99, bottomless green tea w/lime and mint.
you'll thank me....
Carmel's safeway at "the crossroads" on rt.1 between big sur and monterey has excellent subs, they lay the beef on high, $8- for a footlong which'll feed a couple nicely, easier in/out than going into downtown monterey. ask for sonia, she kicks . lemme know if i can help anyone with good tips for a good time in monterey...

Sounds good. I guess as we get closer, we'll get everything figured out. Jammer, I think Ebear said camping was going to be tight at the Love Shack, so I would be willing to put money down on helping you pay that. Since the Love Shack is going to be short on motorcycle parking, I wonder if that could be used as parking? Or do they have a problem with lots of bikes in the campground. Well, whatever you need Jeff. Don't want it to go to nothing.

Eric,

The Smash Mouth concert is a ploy to keep everyone from going downtown from the track, all at once.

Cannery Row is certain to be a hugh event this year, and if you want your bike there, I would suggest getting it there by 8-9AM.

It will be full by noon.

Can you imagine 100,000 motorcyclists in downtown Monterey?

Looks like they are re-using/revising the same old form in some parts. Looks like that is for testing that is scheduled for 2007 and 2008. Interesting info... 98KW (131 HP) at 5,000 rpm and 133 N*m (98 LB*FT) at 3,500 rpm. Get a load of the curb weight?... 582 Kg (1,280 LB)!!!

Must be some kind of trike or something?
