I'm picking this up. It's a nearly complete S1W rolling chassis. I have a pearl white tail section in my garage. Just need to find a 98 (s1w or S3T) motor.

Lake, out of curiosity would you share what you gave for it?

Hey William…I’d rather not. I’m most likely going to be shedding some parts to fund the motor that I’ll need to make it whole. Then I’ll need to decide if I’m keeping or selling

Interested in selling the Vance & Hines pipe from it?

It'll be so nice if someday we're able to start buying all of the disregarded chopper projects for pennies to get our motors back

WOW! Now that is one "wrinkled paint" tank!

Luckily, a regular Sportster motor can be used to bring this bike back to life. All the latest tech that gave the S1 the edge over the Harley is now old news.

Maybe find a way to stick one of those new Sportster S motors in it, would make it a fun bike.

Did any of the sportster motors have the same swingarm block mount at the rear that would let you slide it right into a tuber frame with the right top end mounts? or would you have to get creative with the frame and a welder to get it in there?

The correct era of Sportster motor will bolt right up to that. That rear section that bolts up to the swingarm block on an tuber, just bolts to the frame on the Sportster. The front shock mount/exhaust mount is the front engine mount on a Sportster.

Basically, Erik rubber mounted a rigid mount Sportster motor.

Don't know about the S model but the rubber mounted XLs had this honking big casting on the rear of the engine don't know how in the world you could adapt it. From what I've seen the frame and the engine are much like the V-rod which was supposed to be the platform for several different models. Never happened.Believe you'd probably wind up making an entire frame.

Normthenomad,
2001 & earlier Sportster motors should bolt right in. Of course, the: heads, crank, lifters, cams, pistons, will all be different.

Like the Buells, could that XLS "honking big casting on the rear of the engine", be bolted on?

Not on a rubber mount motor. The rear mount is similar to an XB rear mount, just lower on the frame and cast into the engine casting.

Do a google search for this and you'll see how distinctly different the rubber mount and solid mount motors were.

I think the correct range of Sportster (to fit in a Tubeframe chassis) is 2003 back to 1991. I’d have to research a little to be certain about the 1991 start year, but at least 1991 and later are 5speed.
There may be earlier engines that will bolt in, but there will be trade-offs.
I believe that the rear isolator mount on the 2004 XL and later is cast into the crankcase.

34nineteen, Thank you for that.

Screamer,That would about match when the XB came out with it's own Buell case. Could well explain why the XB cases diverged from Sportster cases.

Learn something new every day.

As I understand it, the XB motor was derived from the Blast motor and thats the reason why the XB cam order is reversed from the XL motors.

In a single cylinder application, the pinion needs to run the front two cams, but on an XL motor, the pinion engages the rear intake cam, which drives the rest, so that setup would not be able to run a Blast setup... unless you had a "dummy cam" or one to act as an "idler" cam.
