Good day BadWeB,

Just picked up this 2003 XB9R. Story is one of the PO's said bike would run at idle but not at higher engine speeds. Someone told them wiring harness needed replacing so they started stripping front electrics. They lost interest and that's where I stepped in.

Appears to be pretty stock and I think I have almost all the pieces. Motor seems to be loose, pushed it over in gear. Put a battery in it and it's blowing the ignition switch fuse (Open to your ideas on what's wrong there). Front tire cracked, rear is an 8 yr old Pirelli. All plastic looks good. White stripes look to be removable. Throttle and front electrics need reconnecting along with TLC. Guestimate from PO was ~20k miles but can't confirm until I can get dash powered up. Will sell it whole for $1800 or start offering up pieces. Have a clear open title.

Let me know your questions.

Thanks,

Rick

Where is it?
Why is it people are too lazy to click on the op's profile to see where they are?

I actually did click it, and didn't know if the bike was with him, a relative, a buddy, or if the info was just out of date...

Like mine is.

Wild shot in the dark: IF anything like my '01 X-1 (they do share the same genes, after all) try unplugging the speed sensor and see if that solves the ign fuse blowing.

My X-1 did that, and the problem was the power wire to the speed sensor had apparently shorted out to speed sensor ground wire right where the harness goes into the sensor itself.

Hope this helps, Dave

Thanks Dave,

I appreciate your note above, will come back to that.

First off, thanks to those who have come before me on the BadWeB for sharing their Buell experiences. After some reading on what causes blown key switch fuses decided to try swapping around the ignition and key switch relays. Had a bad ignition relay, replaced this with the spare and amazingly no more blown fuse. Powered up instrument cluster, had a tail light and horn. Hit the starter button and bike turned over and started.

While running, lots of smoke and burning smell from lower motor area. Found the speed sensor (Dave's comment above) was glowing red and melting insulation off. Will try changing out speed sensor to see what happens next.

Summary bike runs, has approx. 27,800 miles on it. Price remains the same $1800.

Thanks again to the community for sharing your experiences !

Rick

Good to hear. Thank you for the update. With luck, the relay replacement will also allow the engine to operate at higher RPM's.

Nice looking bike,BTW. Good luck with sale; could be a good value to someone.

If it's an early 2003, it may still have the 12v speed sensor and benefit from the upgrade to the 5v sensor (if there's a repair to be made anyway).

Swapped out speed sensor tonight, no more smoking wiring.

Bike started right up, motor sounds fine and revs up with no problems. Shifted into 1st gear OK, but need a break in the weather to try and ride it.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks,

Rick
