Glad to see it's staying intact, it will make somebody a good bike. The salvage title can make resale a headache (I have one for my Uly as well), but it doesn't make the bike any less fun to ride.

There is no way somebody can't get $4500 of fun out of this bike.

A few months back there was a Ulysses owner local to me here in Atlanta that had a beautiful, one-owner, well maintained, 2010 XT for sale. It had a complete set of cf bodywork and a nice list of quality aftermarket options. When I spotted the motorcycle it was listed in the classifieds for $6500...then $5800, then $5000, then $4500/b.o. The bike finally sold for $3800...and that was with a clear title!

None of this is making much sense to me anymore. Buell motorcycles are no doubt worth much more than most are being sold for. I know every buyer wants to get a great deal on a bike but we have become our own worst enemies by not supporting fair market prices to sellers. Buells are not junk! So why do we want them to be priced like junk?

It is unfortunate that I am one of those Buell owners that will be resorting to parting out. It can be a heartbreaking realization for someone passionate about these bikes to know that their pride and joy has such a low market resale value that it is better off being sold in pieces rather than as a whole. In my case I invested lots of money in my Ulysses...modernizing, refining and upgrading for my own gratification with hopes of passing on a great motorcycle to the next owner for them to enjoy a unique ownership experience as I did. Well...that ain't happening. As a result, something good will be lost here. The problem seems to be that Buell buyers have a mindset which is an unwillingness to pay a little bit more to get a lot more. I have owned Buells for many years and I have never seen the market as depressed as it is now. I have to laugh anymore when I hear or see a seller declare that his Buell is a "collector bike", or a future "collectible". Give me a break! And when?

Here is the reality of it: The next time any of you head out to buy a Buell, taking Chrisrogers3 Ulysses as an example, have in the back of your mind the thought that at resale time the only way you might be able to get any return on your purchase is to part out the bike.

Yeah, I've dealt with salvaged vehicles for the better part of the last 15 years (basically since WI adopted the new salvage rules).

It's gotten harder in the last 2-4 years to sell anything with a prior salvage title. People forget the the term "salvage" means "worth saving". Many big name banks won't loan money on them, but I work with a couple of hometown banks and credit unions that still loan money on them.

The big problem, is society now is a something for nothing deal. When possible I always try to pay it forwarded. RBUCK. You are so correct, Something has been lost. Yes it looks like I will be parting my ULY out if I ever decide to sell it.

Rbuck53- The item hurting the price on your bike is the expectation of getting out what you have put into it for customizations. Sure, they may make the bike into a more comfortable product, but you have essentially tailored the bike to you and just you. That's the problem with doing any customizing, it is a very small market that actually wants all of those items (even though they will spend more money making it the way they want it). The same goes for cars, trucks, etc.... About the only area I've found that doesn't follow that rule is with firearms for some reason (of course within reason).

We can discuss this till we are blue in the face. The fact of that matter is, the bike is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay...... And it only takes one buyer to discredit the mouths of all those who say "it's not worth it"...... I'm a patient man, and my buyer is out there. I'm no longer in a hurry to sell it because I didn't get the land I put the offer in on.

And if you found a 2010 Uly XT in good shape with low miles for $3800, you were a fool for not buying it and he was a fool for letting it go for that.

Stuff is worth what it sells for. Reality can be a fickle and harsh mistress.

Anyone is free to value their mods however they want, and decide if they want to sell or not. You will find out what your mods are really worth the moment it sells.

Every time I've tried to sell a motorcycle for what I think it's worth, I end up sitting on the thing for a year before I end up selling it for within 10% of the best "lowball offer" I got in the first month when I listed it a year before.

Each time, I would have been better off taking the best insult.

On the upside, I keep making people insulting offers for *their* used motorcycles, and they sometimes take them and I end up with a great cheap bike in the garage.

If I had $4500 in discretionary funds right now, this Uly would already be in my garage, and my expectation would be that I need to get $4500 of fun out of it because it's resale value will be $0. And I would have no fear about being able to do that.

(Just my opinion, sorry to turn your for sale add into a discussion)

When I saw that XT for sale I already had 2 Buells, plus two additional bikes in the garage. Owning another hard to sell Buell would have been more than I could bear. Anyway... I believe a member of this forum bought the bike because when I last spoke to the fella that sold it he mentioned that someone from one of the Buell Forums bought it.

No frets here about my Uly. I am sure I can part it out and wind up with more $$ than I was asking for the bike with all the parts included. It's just a shame to do it that way. The bike is too sorted to dismantle in my opinion. BTW, Jrobey7 (and he values parts on the low side) suggested my "extras" to be worth around $3k on the resale market, which would have put my Uly's value at only $4800.00 with all the OEM parts in place. Is that too much to ask for a real nice 2008 Ulysses w/low mileage? How far down does the price need to go? This is why I am shaking my head.

Your Uly I think is a solid value at $4500 with the Salvage title. But like you said, "the bike is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay", and I guess that is ????

Haha yeah I hear ya..... With all the goodies I have for mine I have roughly 3k-4k in extra stuff (much of it has not been posted as part of this deal because I know they are worth more separate from the bike. That's why parting the thing out was a feasible idea only because of the aftermarket stuff...... And I may still do that in the future, but every time I throw my leg over the old girl I just have a hard time dismantling it.

In the end though, they are just parts and pieces.

The reality is, as the clock continues to tick farther and farther away from Buell's exit from production (old Buell, not new Buell), people in general will be less inclined to wanna go through the extra trouble and expense of finding repair and maintenance parts for a bike made by a company that is no longer in business. Ditto for the small army of aftermarket companies that cater to the ever-dwindling customer base of said motorcycles. They too have to "move on" eventually. Fortunately for us that still love to ride these bikes, that point hasn't happened yet. There won't be many Buell owners left to sell parts to as the years roll by, as even perfectly beautiful bikes continue to get parted out. That's evolution for you. Nothing wrong with that, except for the people who still think that they will be able to sell their motorcycle, including accessories, for something close to what the paid for it. That rarely happens. The market sets the price for just about everything.

As some have already pointed out, the market will ultimately dictate what the going price is for both whole bikes and parts. Almost every vehicle in every mode of transportation declines in value as it gets older, especially for vehicles that went out of production 5 years ago. That's simply the way it goes for any market-driven economy like ours.

That shouldn't stop people from owning Buells for the reason they bought them in the first place, because they are fun to ride and relatively inexpensive. Those that think they will get what they paid for them several years ago, or more, will simply have to deal with the reality that their bike isn't worth nearly the value that they placed on it while they owned and cared for it.

I still think the Uly is going to be the elusive 'Vincent Black Shadow' in the next thirty or forty years. But what the heck, I would be so old if I made it that far, I wouldn't even enjoy money at that age!

These things are going to be great bikes for several more years. I still haven't seen the replacement for mine. I am waiting patiently for the AX, but that will still need a good test ride to prove itself better than what I have in my '06 Uly for ride quality and permagrin factor. I don't desire a faster machine, but I don't want to be slower either. That Erik fella really hit a home run with the Uly in my eyes.

Is it salvage or "Rebuilt"? Rebuilt transfers as clean title would in most states. If it's still salvage I suggest police inspections & applying for rebuilt title or getting another clean title uly frame for pennies & doing a winter project. Put all the stuff back on it & ask $5500 in the spring.

^ It depends on your state DMV's rules. In SC, once a salvage bike, always a salvage bike.

If you change your mind about parting it out, I'd be interested in the forks, rear shock, kickstand, and front fender. I'm thinking (again) about converting my X to an XT.

What a drama! I will see if there is anyone here in NZ who is keen. The title means nothing other than 'value' to re-register on the road. What a steal. I imported my XP here from Milwaukee, and I have family in Milwaukee to hold the bike until shipping time. Let me ask in our buell groups here and I'll get back to u in 48hrs

The bike has a REBUILT title. It has already gone through the State of Wisconsin inspection from the State Patrol. This bike is licensed and insured. Again, for WI this bike is REBUILT. I am not familiar with the laws in other states and don't have the time or interest in researching it. If you want the bike, the buyer should research it.

The bike is still for sale, I have just been busy with work and haven't pursued any of the interest.

I have put maybe 200 miles on it this year now. I unfortunately don't get to ride as much as I used to.

That's the same way it works in Ohio. I bought mine back from the insurance company, who would only send me the check (for the total value of the bike minus my buyback price) after I sent them a fax showing I had gone down to the Ohio title department and converted the title to a salvage title.

The, after I fixed the bike, I had to take it up to the Ohio state highway patrol along with some paperwork and all receipts for the repair parts. A trooper did the inspection (a motorcycle officer as it turned out) and signed and stamped it, and I could then take *that* back to the DMV and get the salvage title turned into a rebuilt title.

The salvage title will let you buy and sell, but not license or operate on the road. The rebuilt title works like a normal title, but warns future buyers the bike was at one point settled as being a total loss by somebody.
