I picked this up in trade a month ago and it is now looking for a better home. -Clean NY title. -ONE original owner, since new in 1997 -Bike is located now in Eastern Pa. at 19518 -21k miles -Vance & Hines stainless steel exhaust -Forcewinder polished intake with K&N filter -Performance Machine spun aluminum wheels -Performance Machine front caliper -Stainless steel brake lines -Trimmed carbon fiber rear hugger -Original grips, pegs, mirrors as you can see- this one is cherry and has not been chopped up or cafe'd out, nor is she a rat bike. -I have installed the NEW tank that came with bike that has NEVER had fuel in it. Decals are PERFECT with only blemish being a slight scratch on lower left side close to frame which is liveable. -That said, I will include the perfect spare tank which simply had the Buell decals removed and can new ones made to replace and put over the paint and no clear. This is the tank in the pics- with PERFECT metallic silver paint. Spare petcock included as well. - Tires are Dunlop 208 series in great shape, everything works (horn, signals, hi/low beam, brake lights, etc.) so needs nothing for inspection. the battery is on a tender in my garage and in great shape as well. - Has typical rocker box weeps front and rear, and a sticking front brake lever which going the the PM caliper and cleaning the pistons should cure - I just don't have that time. - Delivery is not an option, this bike would need pickup. I can borrow a van from work and take it there for a shipper to grab if you want it shipped. I am asking $3,200.00. Hi C.J. not buying so thats why no email. just a question if u have time. These PM wheels that everyone seem to put on - what is it with them?? I gather they were an optional extra ex factory, but what is wrong with the original 3 spokers. . . .is it just looks or is summit wrong with them ?? (trying to educate myself on tube/trellis framed Buells). . Nice looker by the way | ||

PM wheels are lighter and stronger than the 3 spoke. Other than that it's whatever you prefer. | ||

The PM's are spun aluminum and were a hot product in the 90's on Buell's as well as some factory Japanese racebikes such as the Muzzy Kawasaki's piloted by Scott Russell, Emgo Suzuki endurance bikes, and others. The polished look for street bikes was additional bling, lightened up the machine, and did add to the price. The standard 3 spokes did the job, and a lot of tuber racers of that era ran them for the simple fact as they were cheaper, changed tires daily, and sometimes painted to match- such as a White Lightning from these years. Why put pretty wheels on a racebike and then total it was the thinking. Hope this helps, never a trouble at all I think they make this bike though and work with the Silver quite well..... | ||

Thanks guys, . .figure there must be a shit load of 3 spokers sitting in sheds and garages round the place by the looks of the number of Buell photos I've seen on the web running the PM's. Thanks both of ya's for taking the time to reply. I'd say I'm gunna be trolling (probably not the right word !!) the site, makin' a nuisance of meself asking questions so I can clue myself up before I buy . being a Brit owner from way back it's going to be a Tuber! | ||

Uh...Not exactly. I don't have the exact numbers, but I'm certain that the PM wheels weigh more than the three spokers. Folks who value less unsprung weight actually switch from PMs to stock rims. I did on my S3t, and if my current X1 had come with PMs, I woulda made the same swap. Lessening unsprung weight is one of the most effective ways to improve handling on any bike. As an old Brit-Euro guy myself, lemme just say Get A Tuber!!! You will be thrilled!!!  As for how the PMs are manufactured...They are welded assemblies, spokes and rims, that are machined after assembly. "Spinning" aluminum refers to forming soft material over a form with pressure. | ||

The 3 spoke cast are a tad lighter. The PM would accommodate an upsized rear wheel. The difference is primarily aesthetic. | ||

Very nice and clean bike and definitely worth the asking price. Wondering about the purpose of that little spring on the side of the V&H exhaust..? Never seen one before. Good luck with the sale. | ||

that keeps the muffler attached to the elbow. I thought it was a far better design than welding the can to the elbow | ||

Guell, re spring on muffler - did u 1) once own this bike ? 2) do the exhaust mod on it ? 3) just summised thats what it was about ? Modification makes sense And good spotting Kalali !! | ||

Chris, the earlier vance and hines were designed that way. Ive had 2 of them with the springs, makes it easy to drain the oil too, and the muffler can move some so i figure it puts less stress on the system I havnt ever owned that bike, wish i had because it wouldnt be for sale! Sorry to derail the thread again, good luck with the sale! | ||

Someone make Chris an offer on this bike. It’s BEAUTIFUL. Pics do not do it justice. Every time you ride it someone will stop you to ask about it… It is that nice. I am the original owner and would still have it if finances, garage space and my wife would allow. IMHO one of the best street Buells ever. Eighty honest horse power, Tons of torque and zero issues EVER. GLWS Chris… hope you don’t mind my chiming in. BTW... this is a 1997, not a 1996 as the title of the post says. | ||

You are going to love it . . . you just prompted me to get out some of the old 1995 files for the design of that bike. It also prompted my very first memory of seeing the prototype. I was at the factory, Buell had just moved to East Troy, and was telling Erik that I was enamored with the Miguel Galuzzi's design of the Ducati Monster. He smiled and said "follow me". He pulled the tarp off and OHMYGOSH. I jumped on the S1, he jumped on Big Red and off we went. The orbits changed just a bit that day. The S1 is a piece of sheet genius in engineering. If you don't believe me . . ride an RS-1200 and then jump on the S1. Yep . . they have precisely identical geometry but they are as different as night and day. Let me do some digging about . . I may have a case of 1996 marketing material, brochures and manuals. That bike is likely THE Buell that will significantly appreciate over time. Can't wait to ride . . er, SEE . . no I meant SEE . . that baby! | ||

+1 on life-changing. Even though my S1W probably gets the least miles in my stable right now...I'll never part with it. Now if I could only find the '96 S1 that I bought my ex years ago...that was rotting in a barn last I saw it...red, gray wheels, gray frame, stock muffler and rear hugger, VIN 499 (in case anyone sees one like it  ) | ||
