If you have a Uly and want an S3, then consider reading this, but I'll save us both some time and let you know that it's a LONG shot I'm ever going to find someone interested in the specific trade I have in mind.

I have a '97 S3 project in the works, and although I feel lots of love for tubers, I've already got a beautiful '02 X1 and would rather have a Uly than an S3. Alas I can't afford a Uly right now but I can afford to rebuild this S3 to better than new condition just as I did with my '02 X1.

The S3 as it sits is a '97 S3 frame (not T) without a title. Title went with the motor when some bastard before me put it into a homemade chopper frame. I haven't gotten this far into the project yet but I'm assuming that the S3 will have to be titled as a custom and have a new VIN created.

The frame is bronze - a fairly rare color from what I know, but it has been exposed to weather since disassembly and doesn't look 100% The plastics are pearl white and also weathered, but in good physical condition other than the front fairing has small cracks next to the mirrors on each side.
(parts such as the front fairing that aren't perfect of course will not be used to rebuild this bike - I just want to show that this is in the early planning/parts collecting stages)

I will be using an engine pulled out of my '00 X1 for the S3, and will be honing the cylinders, replacing rings, going through the heads, and new lifters. The '00 X1 engine has 25k miles on it and ran 100% up until the day I tore it down. I always rode that bike hard, but I took damn good care of it as well. The '97 S3 was not built with Fuel injection but this one will have it when I'm done. I already have all the parts needed.

Now for appearance - what I have in mind at this point is candy red powdercoat on the frame, black chrome powdercoat on PM wheels, and denim black on all of the plastics. I am not 100% sure on the color of the forks or swingarm, but will probably go with a flat black to match the engine - which will be all black including cases, cylinders, heads, rockers, even black pushrod covers from a '02 X1.

If I find someone who's very interested in a deal like this, then I would be willing to change some of the ideas I've got for the rebuild according to their wishes.

This bike will receive a lot of attention to detail and I'll happily ride it until the wheels fall off, but I'd rather ride a Uly : )

If you're interested in a possible trade and want to see the type of work I do, here is a link to my last project bike:

As for the Uly, I would love to have an XT but would prefer the X suspension. For that reason, plus the fact that I've already got a frame off custom idea for a Uly, I'd better look for an X model. Colors/appearance doesn't matter as long as everything either works or is salvagable.

I know.. it's a long shot. But I'll never know if I don't ask : )
