I've heard there are two sizes of rear shocks for Buell tubers. I have a 2000 M2 and don't know what my shock length is. It has the recalled mono-shock w/o a reservoir.

Do I measure it off the bike fully extended? Off the bike fully compressed? Or on the bike at normal ride height?

I'm looking to buy a gently used or new, stock shock to save money, but want to make sure to get one that will fit. Thanks.

Erik

you can measure it at static height, wheels on the deck no rider, and get close.

it should either measure about 16.5 or 14.5 inches eye to eye.

The rear of the shock is different so you can tell by looking.

So how do you know what's safe to buy? Any tell tale signs?

Yours is the early Showa with the reinforcing kit. Is yours leaking yet?

yes that is what my shock looks like. I have not found it leaking yet. From listening to they people on here though I guess it is just a matter of time. Hopefully it will last awhile longer though as I don't have the cash right now to sink into a penske or works. What would the length be on this one?

Bhillberg -

Unless I miss my guess on this, your shock is the first generation Showa and should be 16.5". I don't believe that the bolting on of the SRP bandaid changes the length of the shock.

I may have a line on a "K" series kit (14.7") . . .it may even been brand new in the box. It should come with the bracket and the reservoir, although I have not laid hands or eyes on to verify this. The price discussed was much less than the after market options, and may be substantially less than retail as well. I will know more on Friday. PM me for details.

Don

Doncasto,

Sent PM very interested what you find out. I am still pretty new to this so what exactly is a "K" series kit? It will work on mine?

Bryan,

The "K" series kits came out in 2000 to replace the lower quality earlier Showa. Here is a link to the Service Bulletin that discusses the installation, shows the kit contents and indicates which kit number applies to which Buell.

Buell Service Bulletin B035A

The Buell rear shock absorber saga is a complex and convoluted tale. It has been ten years since the drama began and I am still trying make some sense of it. Sadly, as the decade has gone by I have begun to forget some of the critical details - as witnessed by a recent discussion in the "Old School" topics.
