hey I got your e-mail. Very nice bike but i am working with limited funds and 4200 is a little more then I can justify spending on a bike with 22,xxx miles. However, GLWS.

I think that is my favorite Buell and yours looks like a fine example. Lots of nice touches. 22k miles isn't much for a motor that can eclipse 100k without a rebuild. I think your price is right in line with the current going rate for an X1 in this soft market. I think by spring it would sell for more.

To the guy with limited funds you should look at an S2 or an M2, they are going pretty cheap right now. X1W is top-of-the-line...

Yes I know it is a x1W, but I have found several different model buells that sold in my price range with only 2,000-10,000 miles. I've been looking for about 6 months now and its only now that I have some money to spend. Hey.... I could have been an ass and gave him a low ball offer and wasted both our times lol

Beautiful bike...
You should have no trouble selling it at that price if you could hang on for another couple of months. If it were mine, I would park it where people could see it as they drive by...

Unless the frame has been powder coated or painted it is not an X1W, it is only an X1. The X1W came with a white frame, not a blue one.

Tiresmoke ,what is your source on that info. I bought this bike from a bike 2 years ago from a dealer out west of harrisburg. He is suppose to be smart/honest. He said it was a white lighting. The bike says white lighting on it. I never had any reason to doubt him.
In 2 years nobody has told me different.
I've seen white 02's, but I've never seen another 01 x1w at all. Also I thought only the x1w's came with the chrome tail sections? I know the pm wheels were not standard. Perhaps I can verify this with serial#. Does anyone else know/have opinion?

the 5th and 6th digits in the VIN tell you model. SS is for X1, but I don't know if it's the same for X1W. I guess look at the vin and if it's not SS, you know it's an X1W.

I have seen "regular" X1s with chrome tail but all the pictures of X1W I've seen always has white wheels. Not sure about the frame color but I think I've seen them in blue frame.
Either way, really nice bike.

Afaik the x1 "w" only included cosmetic differences from the regular x1, so it doesn't really matter which model the bike was from the factory.

I suppose it could only mater if someone is trying to collect all different "flavors" of the X1. Other than that no big deal.

That bike shipped as an X1 White Lightning from the Buell factory in January 2001 according to the fellow who built it.

Looks like an X1 w to me I was going to buy a new one before I bought my Race Stripe and it had the blue frame. The bike I looked at was new only had like 10 miles on it I remember the blue frame it was one reason I almost bought it. I dont think the dealer would have went through the trouble of putting X1-W skins on it just to get a sale.

Court, I can’t thank you enough for clearing this up beyond a doubt...
Kalali.. You are right it that it may not matter much to some, but it mattered a lot to me because I presented it as an X1W, and if it wasn’t,what would that of made me?
Earl… thanks for backing up that they did come in blue frames…
And Tiresmoke… Sorry but this bike never had a white frame.. that is orgional paint. Please try to have your “facts” straight before posting..
Enough drama. Does anyone want this verified White Lighting?

So the 01 x1w did not have a white frame? I also did not realize that the 01 was so different from the 02. The 02 has a W after the X1 on the gas tank cover and the chin, along with the white lightning sticker on the front. The crankcase, cylinders, primary cover, and the ignition side cover were "natural" not black. Since the pipes have been changed it can't be seen if the originals were blue. I never liked the white wheels that much either so I can see Why someone would have changed those. I did not mean to cause such a stir, I was just pointing out that except for one sticker on the front it did not look like an X1W, Sorry.

I know this is going to come across wrong also but Court, how do you know that particular bike came off of the line in Jan. of 01? At first I thought maybe you knew the VIN, but when I looked at the Vin description in the 01 owners manual it doesn't seem to help single down the month of manufacture either.

I hope all this whips up some interest in this bike. I've never seen a classified ad
run like this. I'd did send Court a pm with my vin# and asked him if he would look into it. You can read his response.
I have to thank him again. His response was very fast, not to mention helpful.

Tiresmoke..no hard feelings, but the statement was it left buell "January 2001 according to the fellow who built it."
what more proof do you need?

Just wanted to add, badweather is a pretty cool web page. Where else can you send a pm, get a response in less then a day, with info from the guy who built the bike 8 years ago? Good Stuff.

Hippyjoe... That's a very positive take on the sitiuation..I like your thinking..

Thanks to all of you for shooting 2 hours of my late night . . . .

: )

The more I research this the more cornfusing it gets.

Today I checked the actual BUILD SHEET, the schedule of every bike (with every part, times, exceptions and all details) for the bike and it indeed shows an X1W.

I was feeling good.

Then I dug out all the parts catalogs for 2001 and 2002 and sure enough there is the Nuclear Blue frame available (unavailable with blue bodywork) and I find:

ArcticWhite(AW) (MIC) Special

So I'm now more confused . . . and decide to consult the 2001 confidential advance media product information CD that has EVERYTHING (Note: I couldn't find mine and you damn near made me break the plastic on a new one out of the case!) and I'm finding all sorts of stuff but no mention of "White Lightning". I'm finding the Millennium and it's polished alloy frame but no X1W yet . . .

Now . . even more confused I figure I'll chase it from the graphics and I consult the Buell "Bible of all graphics" (P/N 99489-05Y) and start hunting for the X1W markings.

Aha . . . there they are but in 2002 and sure enough in 2002 I find the X1W with all the WHITE LIGHTNING on the windscreen and the blue coated pipes (only uncoated and silver coated were in 2001)

So I broke open the 2002 CD with hundreds of static and action photos as well as all design and marketing info and aha . . . . a big whoop it up about the X1 White Lightning.

Stuff like

quote:

X1W White Lightning: Arctic White with Sky White Frame and Wheels, with Blue Ceramic Exhaust Pipes and Special Graphics package

Here's my best guess before my head explodes . . . . I think everyone is "kinda" right.

Thoughts:

  • the folks are Buell were bowled over getting the XB ready that would be introduced in 2002.
  • There were some "Arctic White with Nuclear Blue" framed X1's built in 2001 that were in fact labeled as X1 White Lighting.
  • I'd bet that the concept was cool so the following year the blue pipe went on and White Lighting markings appeared (Note: the windscreen graphics on the bike above are 2002)
  • The 2002 X1 White Lightning did indeed have an Arctic white frame.

Here's some pre-production information from April 2002:

quote:

The MY2002 Buell Range

Buell Motorcycles have a perfect balance between Attitude and Performance for the real road.

Born from the same genes as the famous White Lightning S1, the new White Lightning X1W leads the charge for 2002. As uncompromising and muscular as its predecessor, the White Lightning X1W is the bike to go for.

Similar to the 2002MY Lightning X1, it has extra features to make it even more outstanding. The Arctic White bodywork perfectly matches the Sky White frame and wheels. A special graphic package has been specifically designed for the X1W. And the blue, ceramic-coated exhaust pipes definitely add a touch of class.
Are you ready to step out of the norm?

Then there is the Lightning X1, the ultimate Street Fighter. There isn’t any bike more stunning to look at and ride than the Lightning. A very aggressive-looking bike, the X1 is actually user-friendly. Mass centralisation, frame rigidity and Low un-sprung weight make the bike very easy to flick through the twisty roads.
The X1 bodywork parts are made of Surlyn, a flexible plastic that resists scratches and have moulded-in-colours. For 2002, the colour combinations are:
- Midnight Black with Nuclear Blue frame and wheels
- Arctic White with Nuclear Blue frame and wheels
- Sunfire Yellow with Designer Black frame and Stardust Silver wheels

Polished aluminium PM wheels are available as an option.

Anyway . . . . at the very least. . . . .you have your paws on a darn nice X1. I'm going to do some more digging.

Just out of curiosity . . . what were the rest of you basing your opinions on?

>>>>what more proof do you need?

Frankly . . that's the best I can do . . .

it's an Excel spreadsheet about the size of Missouri that has something like 90 columns detailing the specific bike from the day it was "scheduled" about 6 months prior to build, the day it's done getting built and when it ships (sometimes due to weather or a missing part the days aren't the same) and the dealer who bought it.

I have a 2001 X1 Lightning with the Nuke Blue frame and Arctic White body work...but not the White Lightning model. I prefer mine naturally. Don't like blue headers.

So it's either a sort of prototype/early run X1W... or else it's a standard white/blue with PM wheels and some X1W add-ons. Either way a nice bike. Some good points raised here. My opinion is based entirely on my highly limited knowledge and my often misguided opinion.

Okay . . . let me see if I can bring some closure to this.

I was wrong yesterday.

The bike in the photo **IS** a 2001 X1 in Arctic White with the Nuclear Blue frame. At the time it was produced there was no "X1 White Lightning".

The idea, with the XB's appearing and the X1 on the way out, first debuted in 2000, the last year of the X1.

The above bike is a 2001 with a 2002 decal on the fairing. The decal on the air cleaner is someone's homemade decal, it is not a Buell piece.

It was interesting spending several hours last night digging through records, old build sheets and documents from the 12 month period surrounding the introduction of the XB.

I hope that answers the original question.
