I saw the bike this past Sunday. It is truly a BRAND NEW 1998 S1 White Lightning twin tail in Molten Orange with Nuclear Blue frame and wheels! The pictures I took, which really don't do the bike justice, were in an attempt to show that the bike really is BRAND NEW. For those concerned about it being a real White Lightning, it has the YS in the VIN, instead of the SS a 'normal' S1 does.

Enough blabbering, here are the pics I took:

Damn. That has *half* the miles of the white S1W at the factory, at Homecoming...wow. Original muffler, too. Wish I had one for my bike...

VERY nice!

Yeah, and it looks like they put a left-hand peg on the right side passenger mount!

Mechanical speedo/odo. Push it far enough, it'll log distance....unless you can push in a wheelie, LOL.

Oh yeah, duh! Still seems odd that it has been pushed that far! What kind of concerns would one have about an engine that has never been started for ten years??

Nice looking bike, but just because the existing speedo says 2 miles.............doesnt reflect the actual miles,IF that was'nt the original speedo......just food for thought.

I've seen really clean bikes with 2500-3000 miles on them. I'm just not buying the 2mi odo.

Besides it's still a '98 S1.

8G? I don't think so.

10 year old tires n seals, there's 400 to put into it right off!

Again, not 8,000.

Mileage could really be right...

Look at the battery tray... calipers... axle nut internals....

Those areas are VERY clean/NEW looking... I have a TRUE 97 S1 w/ 1900 miles.. its VERY clean... but the areas i mentioned do have some grime in there...

BUT... that all being said... ITS NOT a $8K bike..... they UNFORTUNATELY DONT hold their value that well.

Matt.

+1 on that Matt, besides you could clean and shine to look new if you thought it was close enough, and buy a NOS speedo somewhere.

I've found new guages for 80s bikes with no miles on them.

I can see mid fours or low fives, it is clean. But it's not a collectable.

It's collectability status is lowered by the fact that recalls are done. It is the second rarest color combo for S1W.

Had the recalls not been performed and it still had the OE battery, I could see the 8K price, just because most of these machines are either used with outstanding recalls (i.e. mine, which is the same color combo), or new with no outstanding recalls.

It's a rare enough bike alright, and the foot pegs were probably dry-rotted. Looking at the front tire wear pattern and minimal, but full-radius wear on the front brake rotor, I'm guessing that it's been ridden a little, but not much. Alot of the tube-frame Buell's I set up had 0.9 to 1.2 miles on the odo from the factory. I'm betting the tech rode it the other 0.8 after the recalls were done.

It's a shame the OE battery is gone. That would really add to it's collector status.

Twintail seat does add to the rarity, I must add.

But if you had it to spend John would you really?

Anyone buying is not gonna spend that much money for a ten year old Buell! Unless of course you have too much money and THAT bike is THE one for your collection, a rare buyer indeed.

I'm just not seein the 8K.

That being said. I would LOVE to have this piece, and it shure as hell would not get put into a zip-lock for posterity!

IF
it was pre-recall status, with the OE battery, footpegs, tires, etc....

In other words, completely crate-fresh,

I would blow 8 g's on it. Wouldn't think twice about it. And no, I wouldn't ride it. I put it in a Nitrogen filled bubble.

The way it sits, if I had a little extra cash laying around (I don't. Thanks, tuition!), I'd probably haggle on it, but I'd pay close to that.

Think: at the very least, you're still buying a NEW bike, for what? 2-grandish off of retail...If it were still at a dealer, you'd even still get a warranty.

If it was a late-model XB12, for 8 grand, you'd wanna jump on it.

Not counting it's one-of-how-many status (very few) which makes rare, new, and unmolested. Besides, you can restore them all you want, they're only new once.

If it came down to buying a bike to ride, I'd save the coin, buy one that's been molested, wrecked, etc, and flog on that.

The world needs at least one original copy of one of the (IMO) most unique, influential, and iconic street motorcycles ever built. The fact that there were so many iterations just adds to the appeal, to me. (Like, would you go to a Bikini Contest with 3 contestants, or 100?)

This is also why I pay NO mind to white S1W's. I know of at least a dozen "new" examples.

I foresee tube-frame Buells going the way of '71 Hemicuda's, for alot of the same reasons.

You can thank the chopper crowd for price rising in tube-frame Buells, here in about ten years, if I'm guessing correctly.

In my area, insurance is compulsory and costs about $90/month. A collector vehicle's insurance is about $15/month (but can't be taken to and from work.) A vehicle must be 25 years old to qualify. Unless there were less than 1500 of that model made in any particular year. Which brings me to my point:
Once I pretty it up, my 1995 S2 will qualify for collector status next June, saving me $500/season in insurance costs. I think that an S1W would qualify as a separate model. I wonder if they made more than 1500? Probably not.
OTOH, my Buell sat out its first few years of life and, as a consequence, needed the valve stem seals replaced. (Fortunately, on FMJ's tab, not mine.LOL.) So if anyone were to buy that beauty to ride it, I think you'd be looking at replacing all seals in the near future. So its not like buying a new bike for cheap. But it is a very nice looking bike.

There are more than 1500 S1W's, but less than that (by far) of this color combo. I wonder how that would rate?

The color dosen't give me wood John, but the body style and the stripped down hot rod look does. After my X1 it's the sexiest of ALL the Buells.

I'm one who leans to the white on white on white...for that matter white on blue on blue.

Eric, you got it right, to be rideable a lot of work would have to be done, but for a time capsule this one is acceptable...but not 8K!
