Stunning Condition
For Sale by Original Owner, who is a 67 year old collector
See Photo Album at http://new.photos.yahoo.com/reykirkman/albums/.
Located in Salem, Oregon
US$6,500.00

CONDITION
• Properly stored the last 15 years, in good operating condition, ready to ride or display. New Dunlop Sportmax touring tires and new Westco sealed battery. It was stored with a full tank of “Stabilized” gas; the carb float bowl was drained; battery removed; and cylinders oiled and filled with marine foam motor preservative. Restoration included draining old fuel. Bike was run on starter with plugs removed until there was full oil pressure. Once everything was hooked up, it started within five seconds. I advertised it here about a year ago.
• Color. Curacao Blue. It is the color shown in brochures of the RS1200 prior to 1991. It was not an option in 1991, but was painted this for an additional negotiated cost of $500.
• All RS1200s were delivered with mirrors mounted on the fairing. Road tests by motorcycle magazines indicated the mirrors were virtually useless. I negotiated with Buell to delete these fairing-mounted mirrors; and replace them with bar-end mirrors. The bar-end mirrors supplied by Buell were convex mirrors and of poor quality, so I removed them for better “flat mirrors”.
• All RS1200s came with turn signals that were stock Yamaha items, complete with stalks that stuck them way out beyond the fairing. I “sectioned” the stalks, tucking the turn signals tightly to the fairing.
• 67 RS1200s were produced in 1991. In addition, for the California market 15 bikes were sold as kits.
• White Power rear shock. Bike was originally delivered with a Works Performance shock, which is included.
• C. R. Axtell #1 cams. C. R. Axtell is a legendary, but reclusive Harley tuner. His cams were sold solely through XRV in Los Angeles. These cams have quite a bit more duration than stock and about 0.007 “ more lift. Stock cams are also included. These cams are not radical. C.R. made a more radical race cam. These cams are just terrific for street use with smooth even power from idle to redline.
• Stainless steel braided brake lines custom made by Earls Performance. Included also is a stainless steel braided front brake line that supplied after delivery by Erik Buell, who then was incorporating a braided front brake line onto his production.
• 1200 RSS dashboard complete with oil temperature gauge. Gauge is not hooked up, and may be inoperative. Stock dashboard is included.
• Dyna single fire ignition. Model number is unknown. The advantage of a single fire ignition is a crisper exhaust sound and stronger spark as the “wasted spark’ is no more.
• Mikuni carburetor adapted to stock-appearing “Ham Can “ air cleaner cover. . K&N deep stack air filter. Set up by XRV with 17.5 pilot jet, 165 main jet and different air jet.
• Zipper billet oil pump with stainless braided oil lines. The OEM Harley pump could not fully evacuate the sump oil at high rpms, which caused oil leakage problems. Zipper did its own oil pump, whose basic design function was later copied by Harley.
• Most fasteners have been replaced with polished stainless steel fasteners.
• E-Z Pull clutch assist mechanism.
• Chrome Harley clutch and brake levers.
• Rare Buell billet foot pegs, shift and brake levers that were briefly marketed by Buell.
• Bike has rare Buell touring bars, which were rechromed by Browns. Stock bars are included.
• M6 primary chain tensioner.
• Currently running with sixteen Supertrapp Discs.

PARTS, ITEMS, PAPERS AND MEMORBELIA INCLUDED
• An extra set of painted body parts, except for gas tank. The fairing half has a small crack from a garage tip over.
• Extra tachometer.
• Chrome Lockhart oil cooler and thermostat together with stainless steel braided oil lines. It is not mounted.
• All correspondence with Erik Buell; original documentation; most receipts; original brochures; original Buell RS1200 tee shirt.
• New Sun Tech balance master crankshaft damper.
• New Sun Tech clutch damper.
• Barnett Clutch diaphragm removal tool.
• Lockhart race stand to raise rear wheel..
• Amp clutch lever assist.
• Original Keihin carburetor
• Spare main circuit breaker.
• Extra Buell body reflectors.
• 1991 Official Buell shop manual – without a cover and without pictures. This manual was never published, but I talked Dave Gess out of a draft copy.
• 1991 Sportster shop manual.
• 1991 Sportster parts manual.
• 1995 Buell shop manual.
• 9 extra Supertrapp Discs.
• Original ignition system.
• Two PowerArc ignition systems. One has never been used.

True. But their time will come. In the meantime we get to enjoy fantastic quality machinery at fabulous prices! If I didn't already have an RS1200 I'd take that one in a heartbeat. I just hope no more of them get turned into "Choppers" or other such follies.

Sorry boys, this one's coming to Australia. This will be one of only a handful of RS1200s over here. Don't worry, it will be loved and cherished. It's a pity that so few Americans appreciate what Erik has created over the years. Inevitably, Buells will be seen for what they truly are.....absolute classics, and a tribute to one man's vision, rather than the product of communal design. I shake my head in disbelief that you have to part out your bikes in order to sell them.
The best description of Buells I have ever seen was by a motorcycle designer. In the larger scheme of the manufacture of American motorcycles over the years, he described Buells as being "an anomaly".
How apt, and quite a compliment.

Congratulations Ken, you're going to love the RS. I have #38 of the '91 model year in Black/Gold. I brought mine over to the UK from Louisiana in February/March this year. I found mine underneath the body work was in quite poor shape and I've spent the last couple of months slowly bringing her back to close to perfect condition. If there's anything I can help you with just drop me a line. The good news is that the quality of many parts used on these bikes is outstanding and I think if they're looked after properly they'll last for ever. I'm not sure how many RS1200-5's there are in the UK, I think there are 4. One went to Germany from the UK and is now owned by Basti who posts here. Good luck if I can help with anything let me know on steve_s@ukbeg.com . If you need a good shipping agent I can recommend one to you.

Well guys, disaster. I have contacted the Australian government Department which deals with import approvals and they have changed the rules. Even with it's rarity and historical significance, I cannot, under any circumstances, import the bike into Australia as it was not manufactured before January, 1989. Prior to this, it was a rolling fifteen year rule, ie, if the vehicle was fifteen years old or more, importation was without restriction. I have imparted the sad news to Rey and I am totally devastated.
Another win for the faceless bureaucrats.

"I cannot, under any circumstances, import the bike into Australia"

That just doesn't sound right. Strongly suggest you contact an attorney who is expert in such issues. Trusting the word of the government folks on such issues is not always a sound tack to take.

Well, further research indicates that I can import it If, and this is a big IF, the manufacturer will either issue an Australian compliance plate for the bike or a letter stating that it complies with Australian Design Rules. I've got Rey on the case, so I hope Erik's in a good mood. I can't see that the RSs imported into Australia would be that different to the others purely because of the numbers involved. Buell didn't make many and only a handful came here, therefore, any major changes to comply with Australian Design Rules would have been ruled out on the basis of cost. Anybody out there know what, if anything changed on the Aussie models?
Blake?
Court?

Help!!!!

Appears to be a non event. It seems to have got too hard due to good old Australian Customs red tape.

hate to hear that....
any chance of importing as "parts" and then reassembling as a custom build?

Here in the UK, before Buells were "officially" imported, they were registered as Harleys. I know of several older (pre 1997) Buells with "Harley Davidson" on their registration document.
