When visiting my favorite HD dealer last fall I foolishly accepted their offer of a test ride on this beauty. It only had 6000 miles on it and was in great condition. I had owned a Dyna in the past and sold it because I wanted something more comfortable, but the Sport model....and in Sinister Blue. I was doomed. Well....the story has had more twists and turns than Deal's Gap since then but the short version is....

I am taking delivery of a 2006 Electra Glide Classic in the next week or two. I had hoped that my wife would want this bike so I would have an excuse to keep it. After riding it she said.... "I like it, but it vibrates allot and it's too loud."

"No shit?"

I'd like to keep it for afternoon rides in the local twisties but I can't justify it from either a garage space or a financial standpoint [with special emphasis on financial.] So here are the vitals...

This 2000 FXDX is in very nice condition, with the expected normal small scratches and dings of a bike with 7600 miles. It runs great...so much so I questioned the dealer if the previous owner had put a big bore kit in it or re-geared it. It shifts quite smoothly for a Harley of this vintage. At 70 mph, the engine feels like it is lugging in 5th gear at 3500 rpm and there is significant power left when you do a throttle roll on at that speed.

According to the dealer, the previous owner did re-jet it and had it tuned when installing the Screaming Eagle II exhaust. I think it sounds great...the SE II's are right on the borderline of being too loud but if you don't get carried away with the throttle, you are not likely to offend too many folks. It does pop some on deceleration but can be pretty much eliminated with some throttle discipline. At times I have found it useful.

The bike has Metzler ME880's on it [my favorite cruiser tire]. The rear has about 6-8/32 " tread left and its been used all the way to both edges . With its fully adjustable suspension, good brakes, and increased ground clearance the FXDX is perhaps the best handling cruiser available....well, used to be since H-D discontinued this model last year. I was told once that this is a rider's and not a poser's bike, probably why it never sold in great numbers.

I removed the skull valve stem covers and replaced the hand grips, shifter peg, and foot pegs with something I thought a little more consistent with the bike's theme. The purchaser is welcome to the take-offs, if interested. I also installed the passenger backrest and sport luggage rack. They are mounted on detachable side plates and can be quickly removed [and replaced] if you prefer the "clean" look. I have a two piece codura touring pack that mounts on the backrest/luggage rack that I will sell separately.

Below 3500 RPM it does vibrate with little abandon, but above that it, it is as smooth as a bass boat planing across a lake in the late afternoon. How's that for a Southern analogy?

I have noticed some very slight oil seepage on the rocker box covers but in the 1600 miles I have had this bike I have not added a single drop of oil. I think 2000 may have been the last year Harley used the paper rocker box gaskets that were prone to seepage. A switch to the metal gaskets in the future may eliminate this. It is so slight I just wipe it off with a paper towel when I clean the bike....or not.

In the interest of full disclosure [or the closest I can get to it] it does appear that the speedometer bezel has been hand painted for some reason.

The bike has never been dropped or wrecked while in my possession and there are no obvious indications that it was by the previous owner.

The dealer assured me that the bike was fully serviced prior to my taking possession of it. Regardless, I just had the oil changed at 7500 miles to make sure it was on the 2500 mile service schedule. I have the dealer receipt for this service. No other service has been required.

And speaking of service.... I was a little nervous about buying a used bike so I purchased an extended warranty plan that is valid until 11/04/2006. From my understanding of the agreement and the literature I was given, this warranty is both TRANSFERABLE and EXTENDABLE.

In a perfect world, I'd just give this wonderful bike to the first person who inquired, as I too would receive the Electra Glide at no charge. But I have to recoup some of my expenses so here's the bottom line...

Getting it from the dealer, I'm sure I paid more than I should have but that isn't your fault. However, I think the ability to transfer and extend the warranty is important. If you have any questions about this I urge you to call your local H-D dealership and check. I want to emphasize that it appears that the warranty can be transferred at no charge and can be extended.

Considering all that, I believe an asking price of $10,000 is fair. I have clear title in hand. I am in western Arkansas less than 1/4 mile from an I40 exit. I'd be willing to trailer it up to 200 miles in order to meet a serious buyer. I have no doubt that anyone who rides this bike long enough to get it into its power band around 4000 RPM and hit some curves will want it as badly as I did when I rode it!

Thank you for looking.

Brad

I've always liked the DX bikes - that one is particularly nice! Too bad you're not looking to trade for a rather unique turbo'd, S2T'd RS! (see profile)
