Can someone with a parts manual tell me if a 2000 M2 speedo drive is the same as one for an S2? Are the axle diameters the same?

Admin help, please. Don't know how I buggered up the topic header. Can't get back there with the edit function. Reminds me of a Robin Williams skit.

Gads...I thought is was a message from Kosovo...I've already e-mail the Pentagon and dispatched troops.

What would you LIKE it to say?

I look like a cryptographer?

The 2000 M2 has a magnetic speed sensor dohicky plugged into the top of the tranny. The S2 has a cable drive thingamagingy attached to the front wheel. One is electrical, one is mechanical. Unless "2000" somehow got mixed up in the cyrptographics as well. I think the earliest M2's may have had the mechanical speedo drive, unless that was the S1's that did.

Wow. Quick response. Topic heading: speedo drive unit. Thanks Court. THe gobblety goop at the front was the middle of my first sentence. BC bud, ya know.
It becomes clearer now. Thanks all. Explanation: there's a unit on eBay that claims to be from a 2000 M2, but its a mechanical drive of the wheel. So its probably from an earlier model. So it should fit?

The drive unit will fit but you might need a different length cable. I see the price is going up on it now so you might be better off buying new.

Too late. Thanks all. Got the one on eBay. But while I have your attention, Jim. My cases have a "port" for an electronic speedo. That means they aren't the originals, right? Funjimmy says we talked about this at Mike's when I got the bike but I probably was too gooned to remember.

I musta been too.As far as I know they were originals.I bought from second owner and bike had low low miles, around 5000 if I remember correct. He mentioned nothing.Original owner was a Neurosurgeon guy in Salt Lake City.He can't have put many miles on it before he sold.Do #'s match papers I gave you?Where is said port?

I don't know if the numbers on the paperwork included an engine serial number. I don't believe I have the paperwork anymore. I think the government got that stuff. I'll look someday. The port is just outboard of the tranny breather, above the pulley, and closed off by a 1/2"X1" plate secured by a capscrew.
Its not a problem for me. More just idle curiosity. Interesting that I may be able to switch to an electronic if some future circumstances required it. Funjimmy is envious since his S1's speedo drive doesn't work well with the brake discs he's using. I've offered to trade him engines but he won't have any of it.
BTW, did I already ask if this thing has the up-dated primary tensioner?
