Hey guys!

first off, very glad to see the forums still kicking.

I've got an 03 blast that's not been taken care of very well, at all. I purchased it off of my boss who bought it from a guy that let it sit for 10 years. The bike has 10300 miles on it.

So here's my symptoms, on cold start, directly after idle comes down from "choke" the system backfires. Yes, a real flame "bang" that can be felt on the inner thigh. It happens every single time the system drops from high idle on cold start.

The bike runs high RPM after getting to peak operating temp. After warm up, the idle is fine, but 10-15 minutes after cruising the idle sticks high, it's very consistent with time and idle RPM.

When I shut it off, I always let it sit and idle for 20-30 seconds before shutting it down. When I do hit the kill switch, it shuts down, and about 3 seconds after the engine is totally stopped it shoots a giant fire ball and sounds like a cannon got shot off. It's again, very consistent.

I've cleaned the carb out, but have been putting off taking it apart in fear of something else breaking. das boot is brand new. spark plug is brand new. services are caught up.

Any next steps would be great, thanks guys!

Okay.
Not sure why you let it idle before shutting it down?
See what happens if you don't use the kill switch, just shut it off with the key. Often with a faulty ignition module using the kill switch will cause bad behavior. Also, random "firing" when the engine is stopped is also indicative of a bad ignition module.
Random firing is not fixed "by giving the carb a good cleaning". If it's caused by one of the following problems, it has a specific cause and "giving it a good cleaning" will just cause you more headaches.
It is possible it is running too rich or too lean.
Too rich, especially at idle (if you're letting it idle before shitting it down) can cause unspent fuel to ignite after shut down.
Too lean can cause overheating and engine knock, ping or run on.

Based on what you've written, that's the order id suspect the problem in. Or a good start for diagnosis if something really uncommon is happening.

@Ez Das Boot is brand new. There was a problem with the old one, because whoever installed it used RTV black all over it...

It is running rich, or was, until the muffler bottomed out and split open. Took the time today to fab a new pipe for it. I'll test the ignition modal out tomorrow. Reading a bit more on the forum, other users past experiences with the IM would point me there.
