So as the title states, there is oil coming out of the shifter lever. Sometimes it soaks the shifter lever so bad that the lever falls off. Where can I buy just this gasket so I can fix this ? Also, how would I best go about fixing this ? Thank you for all your help!! | ||

Shifter seal. If carefully done it can be done without removing the primary cover. Common sportster part number: 37101-84A | ||

It can be tapped in with socket or anything with a slightly smaller diameter than the seal. Pulling it out can be done through various methods. With a pick. With one or 2 screws screws into the seal and pulled out. Or ???? I'm sure there are more. A YouTube search for "Sportster shifter seal removal" or replacement should yield a result or two! | ||

to remove the drill a small hole in the side of the seal and insert a sheet metal screw then pull it out. When installing the seal take some shrink tube and cover the splines on the shifter shaft. Leave a little hanging off the end and heat it up. This will create a smooth surface for the seal to slide overs the splines without cutting the seal. Put a little lube on the shrink tube and on the outside of the seal. Slide the seal over the shrink tube and up to the primary. Cut off the shrink tube or pull it off and save it. Use a 1/2" deep well socket and tap the seal into the primary housing. | ||

So today was the first day I have gotten to work on the blast after I ordered the 37101-84A. I am currently stuck, after I get the shift lever off (which is relatively easy, one hex key and ta-da), how do I remove the silver ring type thing that the lever attached to? Gear puller? Gear puller. Auto battery cable clamp puller. DO NOT HAMMER ON THE SILVER PIECE OR SHIFTER SHAFT: A screwdriver (or suitable wedge tool) wedged in the slot to widen it-and it should slide right off. Light tapping is okay-which is best done parallel to the shifter shaft. Or Carefully pried away from the case. VERY CAREFUL AND EASY. Best to use a small piece of hard rubber or wood between the silver piece and primary cover. In that order of preference. | ||

So I finished replacing the gasket. Ended up not being terrible at all when you have the right tools but that's life. Gear puller to get the silver ring off. Only thing is I didn't use the shrink tube when installing the new seal, I just shimmied it on very slowly and carefully without stressing any side too much. hopefully this one will be alright. In hindsight I have begun to kind of understand the shifter a bit more, it seems that the silver ring is squeezed onto the shifter shaft when the shift lever is tightened down on top of it. A regular hex key is not large enough to give enough torque to tighten the lever down enough so other means are required. either way, I'm stoked to get back to riding! | ||

But it's not really a critical step. Nice addition, but not absolutely necessary. |
