Hey everyone, I have a 2001 Buell Blast. Bike doesn't like to cold start without starter fluid. If I crank it for a minute or so sometimes I can get it to start, but it's a pain in the butt.

I have: new spark plug, new superboot, changed jetting to 45/170, verified float height. So my guess is it must be the auto enricher. Where can I buy a new one? I can't seem to find one online.

Thanks

I have the same issue. New plug, boot, cleaned the tank, petcock filter, new K&N air filter. Seafoam(ed) the carb overnight. Starts but idles rough and when I ride it the engine stays revved up as if I've not let off the throttle, stays a few seconds then slows back to idle speed. Acts like the throttle is sticky. It's good however - new clean. Does not stick. When I ride it purrs along at 50/5th gear just fine. Occasional pop and back fire at low speed/idle.

Next stop is to remove the carb and see if there's some gunk in the slide or AE. Any other ideas before I do that?

Bike was ridden only a few hundred miles in the past few years. Looking to get it ready to sell. 1300 on it now but want to be sure it's good to go before I sell it. No bad karma needed...

First, taking the carb apart over and over again when you don't know what's wrong often just leads to more problems. You might as well take the engine apart and put it back together hoping your problem goes away.

Staying at high revs indicates a vacuum leak (boot or manifold gasket-you are using a factory boot, right?), sticking slide (which could be an improperly installed piston/slide spring), or sticking/binding throttle cables.

I'd disconnect the AE/TPS electrical plug and see what happens.

Check to make sure the vacuum plug on the carb nipple is on and effective.

Have you messed with the timing?

Have you changed jets?

Have you done any modifications to the bike?

Is the spark plug nipple on tight?

-New factory boot (I'll recheck again it's on tight, grooves engaged, clamps in grooves)
- Never said I dissembled the carb / still factory sealed. That was to be my next step
- No mods at all - totally stock
- Cables are free and clear. The slide and flap open and close freely
- Plug on nipple - tight.
- Fresh gas

Will unplug the AE/TPS.

A defective or faulty Auto Enrichener can cause exactly the symptoms described. Failure modes I have experienced are broken wire to AE, broken spring on the AE needle/piston assembly, and worn out, leaky AE O-ring. New replacement AE's are still available through HD dealers. I keep a new spare on the shelf at all times, since I am on my third one in 42k miles. If you remove it to inspect, clean port of the carb it plugs into with Deep Creep (or similar). Use a q-tip to get all the crud out of the small and large bores. The brass piston sometimes gets gummed up and will not move back and forth properly. The piston should be loose on the needle stem; it flops around through about 10 degrees of swivel. This is normal. It should stay connected to the needle stem though, and the piston should slide easily on the needle stem, compressing the spring and then bouncing back.

I rechecked the boot - solid on and tight (prob over tight if that's possible - re-tightened). I'll admit it starts better but still has the extend-o-throttle issue where it does not want to rev down quickly. Pops and farts on and off.

27782-00Y at about $60? Not finding that part # at HD parts site. Scouring more.

But will go thru those steps this week. Running out of holiday day today. : (

That is the correct part number. $63.99 @ Zylstra HD in Elk River MN. Most recent purchase for me was June of this year.

Worth checking for a bad O-ring before buying the new AE. (much cheaper!) A leaky O-ring may cause the same symptoms as a leaky boot seal.

I'll check with the two local HD shops here in the Albany NY area but agree - I'll remove that carb and put it on the bench for a quick checkover. Not incredibly onerous to get it off and back on (after you remove the tank...for the 1000th time).
