Hey everyone, I am looking to give my Blast a makeover. With the new bars and bar ends, a license plate/tail light/blinker reduction on the way(I plan on just trimming the extra stock plastic piece), and ditching the windscreen I have a decent new age cafe racer type thing going that I am liking so far. Anyways, was looking to hit my Blast with a rattlecan paint job. I have seen many that have come out great, and was wondering if anyone had any tips before I dive in! I am thinking of doing a matte black for the gas tank, footpeg supports, and tail, and basically anything else i can. For an accent color, I am thinking a gold, with mayyybe white as a secondary color. I also plan on buying some buell pegasus decals for the bike. Anyways, here are my big questions: 1) What kind of paint have people had the most success with. Brand and temperature sensitivites would be a huge bonus. 2) if I sand all of these parts down, do I need an entirely different primer paint, or just the rattlecan color paint? If I do need a primer, is there a special type I would need? 3) What should my wait time be in between coats. I have heard go really light for the first couple coats, increasing the amount of paint per coat each time. Living in the city I don't have much space, so I would rather bang this out in a weekend or something.... 4) I have heard wet sand between every coat. Do you wet sand the last coat too? 5) Like I said, I am looking at a matte black. Should I clear coat the top still, and if yes what clearcoat will protect from gasoline but still give me a matte black finish (if there is such a magic coating...) 6) If I end up doing a decal, or spray painting a stencil graphic or something (quick stencil on the last coat or using painters tape and another color to add an interesting detail) do I want to put this under a clearcoat, or does the graphic go on top of the clear coat. | ||

Why paint over the most highly sought after colour to turn it " Primer"? Get some junk plastic off eBay or just run without the tank cover. I'll trade you my "battle blue" tank cover for your black! You could literally make money on that cover by trading it for another Colour! Try "Plasticoat" if you must. You can always peel it off. Krylon makes plastic specific paint too. | ||

I painted my black Blast. I painted it bright red. I've changed the color on every black bike that I've ever purchased. Personal preference. I used Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Ultra Cover 2x It's paint and primer in one and is made for plastic as well as other surfaces. http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn80/kwkride/IM G_0659.jpg | ||

Looks very good! But you kill resale once you paint a Blast. And going from Black to any other color and you drop its value. The Blast came in 7 colors and its easier to swap parts than paint. And you can literally sell off your black, buy another color, even paint that and still have money left over (the money you now won't get on resale). Doesn't make sense to me and Although it's too late for you, if I can save just one more set of black bodywork from the trash can, I'll feel better. Once it's painted, it's trash and they aren't making any more Blast body panels. | ||

I'm sure that they're not making any more body panels, but they're probably still available. A friend of mine bought all new body panels for his last year from the Harley dealer. Took about 2 weeks to get them. | ||

Yup, I have a new tank sitting - last Blast was 2010, so parts availability is scheduled for 10 years though they could run out before that - HD being who they are - dick heads. EZ | ||

Kwkride, that paint job looks really solid! How long ago did you do it, as it still looks pretty fresh. I like the red on the wheel too! Did you hit it with a clear coat too? As for the black panels, maybe I will try and find a good set of panels in a different color and sell mine off then... I wouldn't want these to go to waste if someone would be exstatic with them as is. Do all of the same body panels for the blast fit on all year models, or are there some early years that won't fit on my '09?? | ||

I have read a bit about plasticoat and it seems interesting. Not sure how a primer coat and clearcoat works with that paint though. also, the ability to peel the paint off worries me a bit. If it can be peeled off easily, I am worried about how the paint job will hold up in general... Also, if I go with a black plasticoat and then tried used some gold or white or something like that with other spray paint or decals for accent colors, I wasn't sure if the chemicals and such would play nicely with the plasticoat. | ||

A neighbor used plastidip spray to make his F150 look more like a raptor by blacking out some chrome. He just cleaned, then followed all the tips on applying the surface, in particular putting on lots of coats so it ended up thick. Neither of us knew how long it would last, but figured it would be entertaining. That was something like 5 years ago, on *bumpers*, and it still looks great from across the street. I don't know if he even ever had to touch it up. So at a minimum, for long term wear, I'd catagorize it as "better than you would think". I'm going to use it to redo the stripes on the Wife's Mini Cooper S when I get time to go peel off the old cracked vinyl stickers that were applied a long time ago by a previous owner. Not sure it will be better, but those stickers look horrible after 10 years also (cracked and matted). | ||

Interesting, thanks for sharing Reepicheep. Seems like a decent option. Now I am sketching up some ideas and most of what I want to do is have some combination of that and paint or some decals, so I will have to research if they would work together or if for some reason they would bubble or peel wherever the two overlap. I have heard a lot of success from people plastidipping their rims, and that looks pretty cool. Some plastidip black rims with an accent color, whoaaa baby | ||

If you prep it right and paint with good technique you can get outstanding jobs with rattlecans. |
