Hey guys,

Not new to riding but new to the Buell Blast.
Just got the bike and it's been nothing but problems - I have yet to travel more than 10 feet without some sort of issue!

Anyone have any suggestions to remedy:
1. Inconsistent start-up; sometimes it starts and chugs/sputters into an idle then dies out, sometimes it fails to start all together (just clicking, no turning). Sometimes it turns over and starts up no problem but dies when given throttle. Sometimes it starts and throttles no problem.
2. The bike chugs and sputters to a halt when put into gear and the clutch released/throttle is applied (vice versa as well). The bike immediately starts sputtering and is non-responsive to any additional throttle. Everything just chugs and sputters to a halt. When I try to re-engage the ignition at this point the bike fails to turn over and must be turned off, left for 5-10 mins then restarted.

What is the issue?!

Maybe add more oil?
Maybe the battery?
Bad gas? (last filled 2 months ago)
Spark plugs? (less than 3000 miles)
Intake manifold-boot? (reviewed the other posts/forums, took out and inspected mine - looked fine)

The bike is a 2007, less than 3000 miles.

1st: Do not take the carb apart to "give it a good cleaning". It doesn't need it and will just cause you problems.
So, it has never ever run for you? You bought it not running and never rode it?
Is it bone stock?

It sounds as if you have a few problems. Just clicking and not turning over is a battery issue, including loose
or bad cable connections. This issue must be solved first. If the battery is original, replace it. Also check the ground strap/cable at the front of the bike, above the horn, where the front engine mount is.

Sounds like you have safety switch issues and possibly a clogged pilot/slow jet. But if it's not turning over, there isn't any point in going further without fixing that first.

Safeties - clutch, kickstand, BAS; then check grounds - especially front, Battery?, or most common - Das Boot!

Thanks for the replies guys!

Yeah it's bone stock.
-Bought the bike from my neighbor about a month ago (used to be his wife's) before they moved down to FL. It rode fine, the gears/clutch felt a little clunky but I just figured that was the bike.

I'll try to pick up a new battery today and check out the ground straps while I'm down there.

How do I go about checking safeties?

Thanks guys! We're up and running!

1. Turns out my battery tender was giving false readings/not charging. Bought a new tender, gave it a proper charge - startup problems solved.
2. I must have also had a gunked fuel line/carb. Added a couple splashes of Seafoam to the tank, idled the bike for a bit and let sit overnight - chugging/stalling problems solved.

Still running a little rough but I plan on doing some pretty thorough maintenance (fluids, filters, brakes) this weekend so I'll fully drain the tank and give the carb and fuel filter a good Seafoam soak too while I'm at it.

Your bike has less than 3000 miles on it, LEAVE THE CARB ALONE! Run a cleaner additive in the gas (as you've done) and don't worry about it. If you're having problems after a few tanks of gas, then look for the problem. If you're worried about crap in the tank, install a clear fuel filter (the cheap kind they sell for old VW's.
Don't over fix something that probably isn't broke. It's got 3000 miles on it, it's practically brand new! I would check the oil and ride 100 miles before you go willynilly on the fluids.

This whole thing seems very familiar, as if it happened to me recently. If your bike was used in the Harley Davidson beginner class I would ask the dealership for their maintenance record. After having trouble with my bike I got the maintenance record and the only thing they had done with it was one oil change, at 600 miles, in 2009.
