I posted this to the main page but I thought it might be better to just come here! I'm hoping y'all can help me fix this awesome bike!

I bought an 03 buell blast last November and I've loved it so far. However, it's starter giving me some trouble. It kept dying on me and I realized the top of the spark plug was coming off. I replaced the spark plug and was off... Temporarily. After 1 long ride, the bike quit on me the next day coming home from work. It cranks and will start up but then it begins backfiring and slowly idles itself to death. After it dies you can't start it for a while at all.

I've replaced the spark plug, the spark plug wire, and the ECM. I've tested the coil pack and it had a proper reading. I've bypassed the BAS and that didn't change anything. The bike will start right up with starter fluid with the starter bitten pushed down but dies immediately when the button is released.

I'm hoping you guys might have some ideas about what else I can check out. Im at my wits end with this, I really just want to get on the road!

Yes, it may look good on the bike, so you might have to pull it off and inspect it. Murphys law says the split is where you can't see it!!
Check the spark plug tip. If it has one and you didn't loctite it, it may have come loose again.
Coils don't commonly go bad on the Blast.
The other safety switches usually go bad before the BAS does. Check the kickstand safety switch for tightness. It's easily bypassed by jumping the wires together (completing the circuit). Do that and flip the clutch diode and all your safety switches should be bypassed.
Is the bike stock?
Check the boot first!!!

The spark plug tip is good to go, I just checked it. I checked the kickstand switch and it looks tight to me. The bike is stock except for a Vance and Hines from a previous owner. I pulled the boot off and it looked good except for a noticeable slit in it (I attached a link with the picture, couldn't upload from my phone). I can't imagine that was enough to kill the bike completely, but I've got the part ordered to replace it since my local dealer didn't have it

If they didn't rejet for the V&H, it might be enough to shut it down. It's my opinion that unless a boot is really badly torn, it won't shut the Blast down (until it overheats). But to try and fix a problem with an already torn boot is futile.
My suspicion is a bad safety switch, but the boot is first!!

For an update, I slapped a piece of tape over the hole I noticed on the boot and fired her up for S&G. Bike started right up and occasionally idled a bit poorly but kept right on kicking and never died out. Turned it off and it started right back up again. Boot may not be the whole problem, but it's definitely a part! I'll update again whenever the new one comes in and I stick it on there

Update: replaced the boot and tightened it all up. Backfired a couple times then seemed to settle down. Hopped on and maybe got a 100 yards then it backfired again. Turned it back on and now it dies with any throttle. Wheeled it home and then replaced the gas, did the same thing. Made sure the boot was tight and then it started being difficult to start up and idled like crap again. The boot was definitely part of the issue, but it's too dark to take a look at anything else tonight

It wouldn't be the first time a brand new boot was split by a backfire.
Have the jets been changed? A telltale sign that they haven't is if the cap/plug has not been removed to expose the idle mixture screw on the carb.
