In my 2001 service manual, maintenance section 1.9, it clearly states: rotate adjustment screw counterclockwise until it lightly bottoms. The diagram appears to indicate the primary chain adjustment screw as "the adjustment screw". So I followed the directions, and as I suspected, the bolt does not "lightly bottom". Rather, it falls on the ground and then all of the primary lube chases after it. Do they mean counterclockwise as viewed from the top of the bike looking down? If so, then the bolt would indeed "lightly bottom" as the primary chain gets tightened up. Perhaps I have the Australian version of the service manual? Maybe Down under clockwise and counterclockwise are reversed? I would appreciate any clarification on this topic. | ||

Screw the adjuster bolt in, that's the only way it will lightly bottom. However, it seems as if you are confusing the clutch adjustment procedure with the primary chain adjustment procedure. | ||

PS Oftentimes the picture you are supposed to be looking at is on a different page than the one you are reading. Buells/Harley's are not complicated, but the factory repair manuals are!!! | ||

The manual I have is wrong. It clearly states what picture to refer to, and the picture shows the primary tensioner bolt. | ||

Well, the manual may or may not be wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was wrong. It is an unnecessarily confusing set-up, but my manual is packed right now so I can't check it to see what's what. | ||

LOL - your computer has issues - it opens for me. Go to buellridersonline.com - copy and paste - join - then go to the search bar and type in Blast manuals - it is the stickey post in the 1st page of listed options, lol - or go here - http://buellmods.com/ - it doesn't have all the Buell manuals yet, it will soon though, but it has most of the Blast and a newer parts manual. Thank you for providing the buellmods link. The intent of this original post was to contribute some small bit of information to the knowledge vault that the 2001 service manual has an error in the clutch adjustment section. The link you provided does not have a 2001 manual, though it does have 2002 thru 2007. I downloaded and checked each one. They all contain the same error: the text is correct, but the bolt (6) referenced in the sketches is not the clutch adjustment screw, it is the primary chain tension adjustment screw. For schmucks like me who actually read manuals and follow directions, it might be handy to know that the manual is incorrect. Just sayin' | ||

Non-factory manual? The link I referenced was indeed a 2001 factory manual. What boggles my mind is that I ask for clarification and no one seems to be able to look at their own copy of the manual (from whatever source) and either say yep, good catch, or dude you are effed up. | ||

Concur. I don't think this is the first time this has come up. I've looked up and rewrote sections and procedures for many people over the years because: a) they didn't have manual b)they didn't understand the manual c) the manual was wrong d) they couldn't get to the manual. I clarified that you were doing the wrong procedure or were doing the procedure wrong. You could've just taken pictures of the pages and posted them here. Having had to move TWICE in less than 9 months, my manual is packed away, AGAIN. Forgive me if I don't dig it out, asap. To imply that we're not helpful, especially when we have been, is ludicrous and insulting. It takes an incredible amount of time to respond and diagnose online, post links and information, sort out threads, ETC, a task for which none of us is paid for doing. | ||

Between the two of you, this thread hasn't been particularly enjoyable for me, but that's the way it goes. I have nothing but respect for each of you; doesn't mean I'm going to send you daisies and tribute every time you post.
