hey guys/Gals i just purchased a 2006 Buell blast from some cat on craiglist, should have known better.

Guy said there was nothing done to it (modifications) but in my futile attempts at fixing this issue and research I do. This bike has been modified (stock exhaust gutted, high flow into carb, air mix screw was drilled out) so I really don’t know what this bike is or what I have bought (its my first bike)

He said the carbs had been cleaned in the last few months and the brakes bled. He insisted I use some sort of oil hybrid (half synthetic half regular) and he drove the bike and it ran alright and he drove it up and down the street and shifted through the gears.

"sure buddy this bike is good to go"
-my Special Ed ass

Im not sure to the extent of how much crap im in. so im just going to explain to problem I am having.

The bike has trouble starting
(its cold in auburn I know but my garage is nice and warm)

It spits and farts and backfires heavily unless I give it gas. then it only backfires it when its coming down from accelerating.

Then when it reaches a decent temp and it levels off to a slow idle backfiring every 5-6 rotations.
I took her out for a ride and she gives all the power I could want while popping and farting out the exhaust. but when I get back and put the bike on the stand idling she runs fine for 5-10 min before starting backfiring again eventually dying do to loss of power due to backfires. these are significant events enough to blow the air filter cover off!

Now I know "DAS BOOT!!!!" I have been reading the forums and it was true DAS BOOT was broken so i fixed it. now im a cheap SOB so i used a piece of reinforced radiator hose and 2 heavy hose clamps. i know, knock it all in the comments. if you guys insist ill get the super boot.

twisted the kick stand and flipped the diode. nada.

it didnt solve the issue it actually made it worse. so i took out the spark and watched it spark at a constant rate although it is blackened. i dont know what that means i just know its not supposed to be black.

popped off the cap for the ignition and looked at the light for a couple brief min. seemed to be steady enough. im testing the timing today just to make sure its not that.

i ran sea foam with premium and still the same thing.

any advice? i really dont want to have to take it to a harley dealership and have them look at it. i am mechanically inclined and have built out s2000s for fun but this being my first motorcycle/carb i have no idea what i am doing but i do have a shop full of tools so just fire away.

im still flipping through the forums so dont rail me too hard if its already been talked about.

Cheapo trick will not work, buy an intake boot or stop complaining - air screw may or may not need adjusting but not even worth trying till you replace das boot properly. Like complaining of a tooth ache but refusing to go to the dentist.

Concur! Factory boot or super boot, but nothing else will do.
It seemingly ran fine for the previous owner, so avoid changing too many things. Look for the problem, the "shotgun" approach will likely lead you down an expensive, fruitless and frustrating road.
If the boot was indeed bad, the PO may have done things to compensate. Start at the boot.

and please please please don't take the carb apart, especially to " give it a good cleaning". It will end badly or expensively.
