Hey guys this is my first post here. I bought a 2002 Buell Blast 6k miles last year as my first bike and after riding it 2 days it broke down. It would start but then shut off after like 10 seconds. I took it to a mechanic and then couldnt pay for the repairs which was a blown head gasket. I left it there for a year and then last month I brought the bike home and changed the base and head gaskets, new spark plug, changed the oil, changed das boot and it still starts for about 20-30 seconds and shuts off. I checked the other posts and I dont know if its a carb problem but I dont want to open it since I know nothing about it and dont want to mess it up. Any help with this problem would be great especially since its getting so nice out.

Is it getting spark after it shuts off? Does it restart? After how long?

Pull the timing/points cover off and watch the LED on the module. Consistent flashing usually means you have a spark. No flash = no spark.

DO NOT TAKE THE CARB APART "to give it a good cleaning". Please. Unless you absolutely know what problem the carb has, this usually ends baldly.

It will restart after about 20-30 seconds but then it dies even quicker then before. Il try to take the timing cover off and check but how do I disable the safeties?

Fir the kickstand - cut and twist wires together, then tape. For clutch - flip center diode. Those are the two likely gremlins, unless the bike dropped recently - then tip over safety may need circumventing.

So for the late response, I ended taking it to a mechanic and he said that the auto enricher was the culprit. Does anyone know where I can get one? Thanks

Unplug - if you can get it started and keep it started by just playing with the throttle - then he's right - otherwise you are just throwing away money - it could as easily be a sticking float at this point.

we tried that when he was looking at the bike so I guess its not the auto enricher? He had said to change that because he checked the spark plug and gas hadn't touched it at all so he said that the automatic choke wasn't working right. What should I do now?

After reading all your posts, it sounds to me like you're running out of fuel.

It could be a blocked fuel line or blocked petcock. Pull off the hose and blow into the tank (careful to not a get mouthful of fuel).

I'm not too optimistic on this 'fix' because even if it's flowing a tiny bit, it should still fill the bowl overnight, which would result in about 3-4 minutes of idle time before the bowl runs dry.

Since that's not the case and you're only getting ~10 seconds of run time, I suspect a bad float setting or water in the carb/fuel.

Bad fuel ethanol gunk or moisture take air box off and as u give it throttle choke out the carb with yor hand it will run. Mine did this it ran fine when I filled.it with fuel after I did this until I put it on reserve then it died and wouldn't start had to hand choke it 9 miles what a pain once I got home I took off the tank and drained and dumped it upside down to get the remaining out then I put it back together and used 2 oz of sea foam and 2 gallons of gas it has run great so far haven't finished the tank yet but seems to run better than before.

Have you removed the fuel bowl and blown out all the varnish and gunk, with carb cleaner?

Don't remove ANYTHING except the fuel bowl. Spray out every orifice with carb cleaner.

THAT'S IT!

Don't scrub anything, don't unscrew anything...just the four screws (carefully) to remove the fuel bowl.

When re-assembling, just snug the screws.

Step 1. Find qualified mechanic

Step 2. Hire him

No offense but if you have to ask you probably have no business working on any thing.

I don't have that much money to spend on this or I obviously would have gone to a mechanic a long time ago to save me the trouble of finding out whats wrong with it. I had my friend open the fuel bowl anyway and he said there was barely and gunk in there.

The battery is really old, could it.be possible that its the reason the bike keeps shutting off?

Could be, if the battery is shot and not able to maintain proper charge the electronics like the ignition module won't function correctly, and since your going to need a good battery any how why not get a new one to eliminate that possibility.

Also barely any gunk could be too much, it has to be spotless. The jets have very tiny orifices and can plug up easley.

"Find a qualified mechanic"
LO f'n L!! Sorry, but unless you can get a referral to someone who actually knows the Blast, this is often a fruitless cause.

Since you can't afford a mechanic (and I'm doubtful about finding one) this fix will take patience on your part.

First: did you pull off the timing/points cover?

running problem diagnosis starts with 3 questions: spark? Fuel? Compression? We'll assume it has good compression because the Blast is a bear to start with low compression and will usually keep running if it does start.
That leaves spark and fuel. Easiest way to check for spark is remove the timing/points cover. If the LED on the module isn't flashing-you don't have spark.

PS as far as fuel, very often a clogged slow/pilot jet will shut the bike down in a short period of time (after the 'auto-choke' starts to come off) and they are extremely difficult to clean without removing and it's far better to replace it.

But let's focus on spark first or at least the ability to check it.

Im going to check the timing cover first thing in the morning. I was wondering, I didnt know how to jump the motorcycle so jumped it with a car. If the battery was the problem and it wasnt giving the right amount of power to the bike wouldnt it have worked when I had the bike connected to the car? It would do the samething which is start and then die after 10 seconds. Just trying to see if I have to buy a new battery which I probably have to.

if it did the same thing when connected to a car battery, then its probably not the battery. But there are exceptions to this.

The timing cover easily pops off with a thin screwdriver. Just do it carefully as not to stab the module underneath.

Did you put fresh gas in it? It is probably a dirty carb. If you have the skill to change a head gasket, you can read the service manual (or youtube it) and clean the carb.

Sounds like maybe the float is out of adjustment. The gas in the bowl gets used, and isn't being replaced fast enough. I had this problem.
