Earlier this week no less than 5 Ex-Riders edge Blasts showed up on eBay starting at $795. At that price how could I go wrong? I pounced on one. But I digress - anyway - all five were purported to have the same issue, won't shift past 3rd gear. I don't have the bike yet, but I am curious, what causes this? Is this an issue with 2007 Blasts? Is it an issue with klutzy students mashing gearboxes? I am preparing to do whatever to fix it when it gets here, I love to wrench, it just seems odd that five bikes would have the same issue. Ideas? Opinions? | ||

To guess id say they mis-listed them as all the same. The other guess is they are all maladjusted the same. | ||

I wound up paying a grand. Bought the least banged up of the bunch. A bidding war started - then stopped when the others interested found the other four bikes. Looks like they sold 'em all. I'll see what comes and let you know what I find. All of the bikes had written on the tank "Won't shift past 3rd gear" Might be a bent(or two)shift fork, but is seems odd that all of them would be diagnosed as the same - all with different and very low mileages. I feel and engine project coming on. - B | ||

Well, it came. I wanted a project,and now I have a PROJECT! This was a Riders Edge training bike, boy, did people fall off it. A lot! Everything that could get bent, is bent. Frame is okay..rides strait. And, yes, it won't shift past 3rd gear. I suspect a shifting pawl problem. Worse case is a bent shift fork. When you try to shift from 3rd to 4th the shifter won't even move-it's just jammed solid. I wanted a project... At least it starts, runs and rides - just not too fast. i hate to tell you, but you will have to split the cases to replace the shift drum... we have replaced that in most of the riders edge bikes that got alot of miles on them. a groove gets worn into the drum because it never shifted past 3rd... 1st 2nd 3rd, 1st 2nd 3rd, over and over for a few thousand miles... im sure you figured this out since this post was earlier this year. | ||

Check the "PINS" on the left end of the SHIFTER DRUM ASSEMBLY that go into the "DETENT PLATE" !!! Put them back in the SHIFTER DRUM with RED LOCTITE ... | ||

No_rice, Oh yes, that's what it was, but not a groove, someone fell of the bike whammed the gearshift and it deformed the shift drum causing it do dig into the shift fork. I split the cases, replaced several transmission parts besides the shift drum and forks. It's all back together and rides a treat at this point. |
