After riding my 2002 blast over speed bumps at around 15 mph, the bike dies. It full on shuts down and won't start back for 5+ minutes. It will turn over, but won't fire up unless I let it sit for a few minutes. What's going on here? I've checked for any visibly loose wires/other things, and I can't see anything. I have decent mechanical aptitude and I've worked with other bikes and cars, but I'm stumped. Any insight here would be much appreciated. Also, I'm new to the blast world and this forum, so take it easy on me! | ||

Sounds like a loose plug wire, or a bad ignition - a 2002 - it could be either. EZ | ||

Could it be flooding out due to carb / float problems? (I don't have any experience with blasts, but I'd include a carb cleaning along with those wire and ignition system checks if one of my dirt bikes started doing this.) | ||

Carbs were cleaned about 400 miles ago. Checked kick stand switch and nothing happened. Spark plug boot is attached securely. Still searching for other problems. | ||

Jackson, The next time that it shuts down after going over a speed bump, open the gas cap before attempting to re-start it. Did you know speed bumps in Texas are sponsored by dentists? Kenny G | ||

Welcome! We don't flame here. If someone does they will be dealt with. As mentioned before as likely causes: Kickstand switch (also make sure the spring is good and the switch is tight). I'd bypass it anyway-at least for now. Loose wires, especially grounds. Check for anything getting warm or hot. Is the clutch cable hot? Bank Angle Sensor: could be loose or just defective. It could be the tank rollover valve so loosening the gas cap is not such a far off idea and it couldn't hurt on starting ( but going over bumps that way is bad!!) That is the order I'd check. Most importantly: Is there spark when it shuts down? Leave the timing/points cover off and check the LED flor flashing when cranking over. That will at least tell you if you've got spark or spark initiation. No flash and then it's most likely a safety switch: BAS, clutch, kickstand, neutral. Since you did have the carb apart, it's now suspect, but still more on the improbable side. Keep us posted- we're here to help. | ||
