How far should the spring for the primary shoe go in? I can only get the spring in there about 3/16ths of an inch, and when the shoe is on, the spring is not straight out but exits at a downward angle. Furthermore, it seems to me that this is keeping me from putting the back as far as it should go. Any advice?

All the way in. You'll struggle until you learn the trick and then it will seem easy! Sorry, but without it sitting in front if me, I can't help.

The trick is more about finessing it, or should I take a pair of pliers or a hammer and force it in?

Finesse. Spring tools may help, but forcing will damage. I wish someone who had done this recently would chime in. I know it was a PIA, but I don't remember the easy way it went in when I figured it out.

Yeah the spring should be all the way in. Make sure you have the correct end of the spring going into the shoe. If I remember correctly, the last time I did mine about 3-4 months ago. I used needle nose pliers underneath to pull the spring down whilst pushing the shoe into place.
