I've only seen glowing catalytic converters!!! But as I said: If Swampy said it, I usually believe it! And if I dont, then further research is probably needed!

Same with EZ.

Thanks Guys.... I have been driving it the last couple of days and emailed ez. It seems fairly common to have a steel header glow. However it seems mine glows unusually fast. I am ready to disregard the issue after driving it on a couple tanks of gas with no issues idling or riding. Also I adjusted the idle screw and it seems much better than before. It got to hot and brought the idle up with the temp. I pulled that back and it runs like a dream. I'm going to check the spark plug per your advice. Thank you very much!

Oh also I took it on the highway today... It struggles to go over 75 mph. I feel like the last gear just has no power any more. Any ideas what might cause this? Keep in mind the mods i have just completed(kn air filter, jets, shim, exhaust, air fuel screw). It was always slow on the highway but this seems noticeably worse. The other gear seems to be fine maybe a tad bit slower. However I was expecting a noticeable increase on the max speed and overall acceleration. This I did not get. The bike is loud as hell (because the new exhaust)and it runs and idles fine. How much of a performance increase was to be expected? was my top speed supposed to increase? was the overall acceleration supposed to increase?

Replace plug, loosen primary out say 14 flats to 16, replace boot if you have not. Enjoy!

Newbie to motorcycling. Did my first real ride this past weekend (about 150 miles) and found that the throttle vibrates so much my hand goes numb. I am reading about bar ends and gel grips as a big help. Can folks suggest ends and grips? Any other ideas? Other than that, I'm in love with my bike.

You want the slightly oversized gel grips sold for sport-tourers 7/8"

Just picked up 2000 Blast
It has been converted so that the peg positions are more sport-bike like. That does not work for my wife, so i need to get a pair of the original style peg mounting brackets. Does anyone know where to find them and if they are the same for all years of the Blast?

eBay or the classifieds here. All years are the same.
Selling those rearsets will easily pay for the stock Y-frames!

Thanks for all of the information. I am ordering parts to return the bike to stock condition-This is my wife's first bike and I will everything I can to see that she likes it. After all, she agreed to me getting my '08 Ulysses.

I may have another problem in that the forks appear to be tweaked to the left when riding straight. I know the upper triple clamp is asymmetrical and that may be influencing my perception, but it still appears to be a bit to the left.

I have also noticed that the bike does not handle as lightly as the Ulysses. Is that usual?

No, check fork oil - low - stock is 10w - loosen tubes in trees then re-tighten - forks should re align if just twisted from a drop. If still feel mis-aligned then fork may be bent. Is everything too bouncy?

The upper triple clamp is asymmetrical? I dont see that?! The fork tubes usually bend first, then they twist in the triple tree (clamps). The triple tree doesnt usually bend. If you loosen up the clamps as suggested, things may return to normal (if theyre not). If you loosen the clamps and remove the front wheel, you can spin the fork tubes to see if they're bent (it will be obvious). But if there isnt a handling problem, I wouldnt worry much about it. (its been my experience that if you dont mention a suspected problem, "no one" is going to notice it).
Maybe one of the Uly riders will comment. The XB is different, but I wouldnt classify the Blast as heavy handling. I've only ridden a Lightning and it just felt (to me)just like a Blast, but with bigger shoes!

This is what I mean by asymmetrical:

TC1

TC2

Because the clamp itself is not symmetrical it is hard to tell if it is slightly off center.

It is not that the bike handles poorly it just does not change direction as easily as the Uly. Maybe it is the tires. The rear is a bit squared off. I am planning on installing the oversized pirelli tires recommended here.

FYI: The front Scooter Pirelli is not oversized*, the rear is. The front is actually undersized and will quicken your steering-in combination with the rear (which is what you want, I gather-not sure what your wife wants....).
Whatever you do though, Pirelli, Pirelli, Pirelli!

A new tire will definitely roll (over) better. If your wife's a new rider I'd caution against anything that will make the bike feel (seemingly or more) unstable.

Okay, that was the only thing I could find off center with the forks.

*I've heard arguments up and down that the Pirelli front 110/70 is not smaller. It is smaller than the stock sized front tires. I have them both and its very easy to see the difference. I've yet to have anybody show me a picture that shows the 110/70 being bigger or give me dimensions.

I am having to get a new set of tires as well. Only 4K on the bike and the stock rear is done.
Is there anything special that has to be done for the oversized rear?
Also, Erik, if the front is smaller, does it make your speedometer show a little fast?

Thanks for the info, I meant wider for the tires. I take your point on the front. I will stick with the stock size for now. I think she would be more comfortable with that.

I just noticed that the owners manual states that the pulley and belt should be replaced at 15k miles. Is that really necessary, IF so, where can I get them?

Speedo would be close enough (if you switched).

Change the belt at 15k or carry a spare (or both)! Its a 10 minute easy install on the belt (harder with rearsets). Seriously, very easy to switch out with a only torx 27 screwdriver needed (a torx on a ratchet may be needed for the chain guard bolts if stubborn).

Nothing to modify on the rear if you're using the Pirelli's. Some others will need the rear shock tab beaten in. It is a tight fit and you should always eyeball it just in case you get an odd tire or swingarm. But it should not be a problem.Just dont take for granted that any brand oversized tire will fit, even in the 140/70 size.

Now i feel a bit dumb. Checked tire pressures- 20 front, 25 rear. Put them up to about 28-30 front and 30-34 rear. All of a sudden the handling is very quick and easy.

Also changed the oil. The manual did not suggest filling the oil filter, so I did not. It took longer than expected for oil pressure to come up. So, from now on I will be filling the oil filter before I put it on.

Would love some step-by-step advice on two items that I'd like to check/do on my "new to me" Blast (pictures posted in the other forum). Please keep in mind that I'm working hard at doing as much on the bike myself that I can - but I am NOT a mechanic and even certain terms mean nothing to me :-)

So far I've been able to rejet the carb (obviously requiring me to remove the air box, etc.), do an engine oil change, replace the air filter (which required some electrical tape around the mount to hold the K&N filter - thanks for the tip on this site for that), wrap the exhaust (the titanium looks awesome to me - great job by my wife/daughter helping), get the tires to correct pressure, etc.

So the two things I'd like to do is check/adjust the primary chain and change/replace the primary/transmission oil. There are numerous places on this site and elsewhere talking about both items; however, there never seems to be a version that goes from start to finish without eventually using a mechanical term, etc. which leaves me confused. As an example, for adjusting the primary chain, can I get a start-to-finish on the process to include the description of what type of torque wrench (size, etc.) to use, definition of a "flat", order in which to address the bolts, etc.? It would probably even be helpful to have a description on how to properly use a torque wrench, to be honest!

For the crankcase oil, I do not have the tools to take off the footpeg bracket, and knowing myself I would probably cause a bigger issue with something else trying to take that bit off (not to mention stripping things out, etc. at the clutch cover). Can someone point out a "lead the dummy to water" description of where the correct breather hose is for putting the quart of oil in that way? I've read several descriptions, but I'm not finding that hose.

I apologize for the very basic and probably not-so-smart questions...I'm doing my best to dive into doing most of my own maintenance on this motorcycle (my first). I love the cleaning and polishing part - I've spent hours detailing it with my son...so I'm not afraid to get "into it" - just don't have the background to know what to do, if that makes any sense. I'll try to post up a picture of what the primary chain adjustment bolt looks like now later this evening, btw...perhaps someone can tell me if it "looks" close.
