Have a 2002 Buell Blast. It had been sitting and inactive for a year. Surprise! It won't start. I have replaced the battery, new spark plug, new boot (the previous boot had been old), and fresh non-ethanol gas with fuel cleaner. Still won't start.
The bike will attempt to turn over, but never engage and then will settle into "clicking" sounds. I'm a newbie, so I'm stumped. Any thoughts? You can view video on Youtube if it helps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57AbQPK_nNc&feature =youtu.be

Battery is dead. A bike with a battery dying will be very hard to start. Often just the act of trying to turn the engine over robs the ignition of power. If its the original battery, get a new one. After you charge up the battery, then see if it will start. The plug for the headlight us about 6" down the wiring leading out of the headlight Housing. Unplug it to save the battery while diagnosing the problem.

Did you buy it not running?

DO NOT take the carb apart to give it a good cleaning. If it does have a carb problem, it's likely a clogged slow jet. If.......

Check your front and rear grounds and battery connections.

Concur!
Sometimes reading off my iPhone I miss or forget things (like the battery replacement)!

Is the battery fully charged?

Also feel the clutch cable. If it gets hot, that's an indication a ground cable is loose or disconnected.

The battery is new. I assumed it would carry a ready charge. I have it on a trickle charger and will try tomorrow a.m. Thanks everyone. Will keep you posted.
I bought it running. It sat, once I became prego.: ) Now, I have my motorcycle endorsement, and my baby is now a toddler, so the timing is good to get the Buell out. : )

Yes new batteries should already be charged, up but sometimes....

Watch out for smoking wires, thats a big sign of a loose battewry/ground cable (like the heating up clutch cable is).

Definitely keep us posted.

Thanks my friends, but the bike is still not firing up. I put the battery on a charger, re-gaped the spark plug to .040, and still nothing. The clicking sound is gone, but it still lugs. The engine turns but does not start. Driving me crazy. Appreciate all of your long distance help. Posted on YouTube again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKf1EZJypKM&feature =youtu.be

First: Dont "pump" the throttle. The Blast doesnt have an accelerator pump so it wont do you any good, if fact it can make it more difficult to start.
Have you tried 'starting fluid'? If it fires up but wont run for but a moment, you at least know the ignition is good. You can also cover the carb with your hand to create an artificial choke and that can help starting (it will suck your hand in so use caution-DO NOT use this method in conjuction with starting fluid).
My next guess is a clogged slow jet. That is common from sitting. If you're going to take it out to check it, buy a #45 slow jet and replace it. Its a commonly used Harley jet and they arent worth cleaning. Its about a $6-$10 part.
Do Not Take the carb apart to give it a good cleaning.
You can also remove the timing/"points" cover to see if the LED light on the MOdule is flashing. No flash = no spark.
