ill go leave from my house or work and it will start up just fine. Ill park it, let it sit for a while, then come back to start it again and it wont. It cranks but wont fire up. It only does it occasionally. and if I let it sit for a few hours to cool down itll start up again. Im seriously ready to just set it on fire. lol |

Good question! It just may be a case of it being too lean. Stock bikes are too lean. If its stock, bump the pilot jet up to a 45 and turn the idle mixture screw out 2 1/2 turns. Instructions are in the "carb" section. I'd also try shimming the needle. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/201 64/6812.html?1369876859 You should also make sure the gas tank vent line is clear and not kinked. Blasts have been notorious for this problem and I would rejet before you pull more hair out. If that doesnt solve the problem, then we'll go on to the next step. I think it has a lot to do with the 'automatic choke' not functioning very well. Your profile says "mechanic". I wasnt sure what kind, so if you need more specific information please let me know. But please dont take the carb apart to "give it a good cleaning". |

I'm an auto mechanic not really a bike mechanic but I'm starting to figure stuff out. I remember you telling me not to pull the carb apart in one of my first posts but I did anyways. IIRC the pilot jet was a 45. The PO had a V&H exhaust on it (which i have but haven't put on yet due to it not running right) I'm fairly certain that he told me that the carb had been rejetted. Anyways. I yesterday I talked to my buddy who is a motorcycle mechanic (also stunts a sportster) He said it might be running lean, getting too hot and overheating. I pulled the spark plug out, it was starting to get white, plugs are plugs I know what that means so I turned the idle screw in to 2.5 turns where it should have been. It ran fine. After that. A lot better I think. But I don't remember the choke coming on at all. I honestly don't remember it coming on much at all recently. I thought it was running fine so I went to run some errands last night. I shut it off 3 or 4 times but no long than for 10 min or so before starting it back up again. It started just fine. So them I went to the bar my girl works at for dinner and a beer. Got there at 8, went to leave around 9:30, wouldn't start. Went back into the bar and went back out at 10 to try again, started up but it was running weird. Choke didn't come on, it backfired a bit (through both the exhaust and carb). I revved it a bit and it seemed to smooth out. So I took off, got about a mile down the road and it shut off on me and wouldn't restart. Had to push it the mile back. (Part of it being up hill) then left with my girls car to the shop to get the shop truck and loaded it up. Took it back there and now it sits. Lol I just want it to run right again so I can sell the damn thing. |

It's a simple little bike .......spark, fuel, compression. We can assume its got compression because it runs on a regular basis. Check spark? Pull off 'points' cover and watch LED on module for flashing. Check for spark at the plug wire (no sense in pulling the plug, use a spare or screwdriver). I'd pull the air box off and manually choke it by covering the mouth of the carb. Or carry starting fluid. How is the carb intake boot? Did you pull it off and check for a split? Is the vacuum port on the carb plugged? Drop the float bowl, does it have fuel? I'd run with the air box off (for now) to facilitate easier testing (provided you aren't running in a high dirt area). If it is the choke you can convert it to manual, if desired. All choke problems will then go away. You can also test the auto check via various means described on Badweb (use the search feature and search the Thumper forum). |

Erik, I need your help again. It seems to be running better but now it won't start after a hot soak or cuts out on a long ride. I ride it to and from work mostly now because I don't trust it. (I work 2miles from my house) But on warmer days when I come home for lunch and it sits in the driveway for 30-45 minutes hot soaking, when I go to leave my house it won't start. Or when I take a long ride after about 45 min to an hour it wants to stall and not restart. Today I let it idle in the driveway and get nice and warm, let it hot soak for 45 minutes or so and then tried to start it. Guess what. Wouldn't start. So I pulled the wire off the plug, stuck my spare onto the wire an let her rip. no spark, no arching, nothing. I'm getting the feeling it's a coil or icm. What do you think? |

Pull the timing/points cover. That will let you see the LED on the ignition module. If that's flashing, but you still don't have a spark, then it may not be the module. If the LED is not flashing, then its 99.99% going to be the module (not 100% because weird stuff can happen!!). From your description, yes it would appear to be the ignition module. I just wish you could have seen the LED too. Pull the cover and leave it off until you've fixed this problem. |

So I went down to the garage and tried to start it again, it didn't start. I pulled of the timing cover. Guess what, no flashy. Looks like ill be needing a new ignition module. |
