Hey guys,

First time poster but I have been reading since I bought my Blast 3 months ago. I have a question you guys may be able to help with. I posted this on the main page thinking my odds of getting answers would be better, but I thought I would post here as well.

First off, my bike is stock with the exception of EZs stock air box mod. I recently bought a Denso Iridium Racing plug and will be installing that shortly. I have also purchased some new carb jets (45 slow, 170 / 175 main) from my local HD dealer and plan on installing soon. My exhaust header broke recently, so I have ordered the Vance & Hines SS2-R exhaust system. I should be installing that in the next week or so.

My question is in regards to the intake/carb. I have poured over the intake mod suggestions and haven't seemed to find an answer. I would like to ditch my stock airbox and go for a more free-flowing setup. From what I have read, the options are to buy an intake elbow with filter system from EBay or do the Velocity Stack with Outerwears filter method. As many of you may know, premade intake systems are costly and hard to find. American Sportsbike doesn't carry the Velocity Stacks anymore and they told me the part was discontinued. Therefore, my options seem to be few.

I was wondering if I could use an Outerwears filter with hose clamp over the stock Venturi instead of the Velocity Stack. I realize the stock Venturi isn't as tall so there isn't much space to clamp onto, but it seems like it would work in theory. Would that work? If not, could I buy a carb spacer to the Venturi to make the setup taller and have more room to clamp onto? Where could I find such a spacer?

If neither option is feasible, the only other options I can think of would be to make my own intake using bent metal (I'm thinking HVAC connectors) and attaching a filter to the end using hose clamps. Thoughts or suggestions on how I should start that?

If these options won't work the last option would be to buy a K&N filter (BU-500 I believe) and keep the airbox on. I have already done EZs mod so that should help breathing.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks for the info. The center hole diameter for this setup is 2 1/8" which seems big for the CV 40. I was under the impression that the opening for the carb was 1.58"...

Also, I wanted to see what your thoughts were regarding clamping a filter over the stock carb Venturi instead of a 2.5" or 3" Velocity stack? Do you think I would have enough room to clamp to? Would a carb spacer help?

If that works, I was considering leaving the airbox on and ditching the filter. I would also do your wild airbox mod (already done the mild version) essentially cutting out more of the walls, etc to allow even more breathing.

Thoughts?

The stock carb venturi was cut off, if you did the regular mod, if not, then that is what you attach the filter to.

I think we are thinking of 2 different things here. When I say the Venturi, I mean the ring that bolts on the carb mouth. I call it that because it was called that in the Service manual I have. You would need to remove this if you were going to run the M2 Velocity Stack (now discontinued.) Here's a link to the part that i was referring to:

So my question is, if i left the stock Venturi ring on, could I bolt an Outerwears filter to that and leave the airbox (minus the filter) on? The stock Venturi ring is only .5" thick/tall, as opposed to the M2 from American Sports bike which is like 3" tall.

No, however, clean out the excess interior air-box walls, and put the filter on the air-box venturi.

That's a good idea. So basically I would be taking the stock filter out (less weight) and improving air flow. Unfortunately, I cut off the venturi/bugle mouth opening when I did your mild airbox mod.

I did some more research this weekend and think I found a solution. PJ Motorsports (a company out of California I believe) makes Velocity stacks for the Keihin CV 40 carb. Their setup comes with an inner filter and an Outerwears filter as an additional option. The stack plus the inner filter is around $60, so it seems like a decent option.

Harley also has 2.5" and 4" Velocity stacks for Keihin CV 40s for around the same price range (actually the 4" is cheaper for some reason.) The 2.5" would be ideal but I think the 4" would be too much when you consider leg room.

I tried the PJ Motorsports Velocity Stack, It's ok, but I don't recommend it. There is something to remember, that Breather Hose is there to draw oil mist into the cv carb and luricate the slide. I'm Building a Mod Now, Just an older style carb air cleaner, 6 " round, and Building my own Back plate for it, Would be nice to make a metal venturi ring, SS Teardrop Airfilter worked good on the EVO Motor, Might Not work we'll an a blast.

The PCV hose is not there to lubricate the slide. Somebody lied to you.
