Check the primary chain adjustment first. Its probably too tight.

Have you researched how to make the adjustment? The Blast comes from the factory with the primary adjusted WAY loose and generally if it isn't making noise(too loose) you should be good to go. So adjust it way loose till it is making noise, sort of a rattle, then start tightening it until it just stops making the rattle.

i did the adjustment a while back, as directed. it got me a few more mph higher. but i still can't hit 100, or anything over 78.

Is timing too tarded? Top on a flat sea level stretch with a stock ignition is 95mph. Rider aprox 160 lbs though the same is true of a rider 100lbs more - still plenty of power for the weight involved. The 2000 Blast can do 100 because of slightly different gearing. Are you getting clutch slippage? What would a compression test say?

Look at your spark plug, make sure you are not running lean. Make sure your throttle is opening all the way.

One time I was working on an AC Cobra, 427 dual quad, the guy wanted nitrous, so when I got all the sprayers and lines hooked up I went to put the micro switch in at the carb, and found the throttle was not opening up all the way. When the guy that owned it brought it back for a test drive he said having the throttle open all the way up really made a difference. Of course he also said that when he hit the nitrous it was like having another motor in it...

So check to make sure your throttle is opening up all the way.

So I had something odd happen to me the other day, and I kinda want to know what you guys think. I ran to the grocery store to get a few essentials before finals week. I got back to the bike, fired it up, put on my helmet, adjusted my backpack, pulled the clutch, dropped her into first, gave her some throttle, let the clutch out, and BOOM! she backfires and then dies, and I feel something hit the inside of my right leg. I put the kickstand up (the reason for it dying) try to start her again, and she just turns over. I start looking things over and realize that when she backfired, she blew the whole air cleaner, carb, and boot off the intake port. I've got the pro-series intake on it, btw. I loosen the hose clamp, push it back on the port, tighten the clamp, and she fires right up. Has anything like that happened to any of you? Do you think there might be any problems later on? Thanks.

Thats the number one cause of "Das Boot" failures. Very common. The safety switches are great, but they cause the bike to backfire and blow the carb off the bike! Not as much of a problem if you're running the stock airbox. Big problem if you're not.

You might have split the boot. The only way to find out might be to take it off and inspect it as murphy's law says the split will be where you cant see it on the bike! It also might be hidden under the clamps.

If its running okay, you should be fine. It may run lean if its split, just listen for any signs of overheating such as knocking or pinging (and shut it down if it does). I've ridden 85- 90 mph with a split boot for at least an hour and found the boot was split when I got home.

I've read a few posts that reference a "super boot" or something but can't seem to find anything else about them in other threads. What is that all about for when the time comes that I hafta replace "Das Boot"?

Designed by a fellow Badweb Thumper. Kind of overkill if you're running a stock airbox, excellent if you're not.

Wow that does look pretty solid. If that doesn't keep it from splitting, nothing will. Thanks for the info.

Hey Guys,

Having some trouble with our Blast

Starts up and fluctuates slightly while sitting in neutral, but when given gas, dies ...

One time did see some smoke coming out of air filter box, not sure why ...

Here's a video of it, any suggestions / ideas?

Das Boot!!!
Check the intake boot/manifold coupler for splits tears It may be hard to see on the bike though. Its the #1 cause of Blast running problems.
If its not the problem, please post back.

PS you havent done anything to the bike before this happened? How long have you had the bike? Mileage?

Im having a issue with my boot. The first one finally split and my new one is having issues keeping it all together. It keeps vibrating off...I was wondering if it would have anything to do with the aftermarket intake, because there is nothing there supporting the weight of it...Do you have any solutions?

01 Blast that had been laid down on the left side. It ran, but backfired occasionally. One night I left the petcock on, and the next day it wouldn't start. I replaced the spark plug and the coil. Had a guy go through the carb. He got it to run, but it cut out on him. Tested the electrical components, and he said it was the regulator. Changed that and it drove for about five miles. It would NOT restart unless I let it sit for hours. I changed the boot, but but that hasn't helped. So I can start it easily cold, but I can't start it if its warm. Any ideas?

Welcome Scotch!
You dont say whether it backfired only after it was laid down or not. It sounds suspiciously like an ignition module (early years seemed to be prone to failure).
The other ignition related part is the BAS (bank angle sensor), which cuts out the ignition when the bike is laid down (and wont switch the ignition back on until the bike is turned off and on). They can stick in the off position or just go bad.
Another is the rollover valve in the fuel tank filler neck. This closes the gas tank vent so fuel doesnt spill out in case the bike is laid down. They can stick closed.
All three will cause the symptoms you described and I'm sorry you replaced all those parts (and pulled the carb apart : () (and, of course, Das Boot). However the ignition module is the one that usually fails when its hot.
I would not just go out and replace the module though. Thats usually done after you've pulled all your hair out! They are hard to diagnose but....first pull off the timing/points cover. The module has an LED light which will flash every time the ignition sparks. No LED=no spark. If you cant start the bike and the LED isnt flashing, its the module OR a related safety switch. Usually (but not always), if its a safety switch the bike will start in neutral, clutch pulled in and die when that scenario is changed.

Look for the LED when it wont start. Unfortunately the easiest way to diagnose the problem is when its happening.
Keep us posted.

Hi all. I'm new to riding & went with a 2002 Buell Blast because it seems like a great bike. But I tried to take it on the free way & as I was riding along steadily at 70mph something went & there seems to be different liquid splatters along the front wheel & the right side of the bike. I'm sitting on the side of the road waiting for my pick up, & was just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to where I should start looking? & for what?
