I just bought this 2003 off Ebay and am wondering what I need to check on a bike with this kind of mileage (10K) I am new to ownership of ANY bike and welcome any advice you might have.

It runs good after about 10-15 min of warm up but does seem to have some 'slack' in the transmission @ low speeds ( or I'm just not doin' it right )

Well, the transmission slop is probably normal. They're not exactly a precision transmission.

It shouldn't require 10-15 mins to warm up. 2-3 minutes until riding, max.

Check the intake boot and probably just replace it (it's the rubber coupler between the carb & the engine). They go bad & cause all sorts of trouble.

Run some Seafoam through the fuel system to clean out the carb. If it's running, pulling the carb apart isn't worth it.

And change the oil - both the crankcase oil and the primary oil.

Ride it. After a hundred miles or so, if anything is wrong (or sooner if need be) then address it. That includes changing the oil. Get a repair manual. The Blast is "different in every sense" and your "regular Joe" tends to screw things up thinking its the same as the rest.Simple, but different.

Syonyk: I'm not sure he has to do any of that stuff. Most Blasts dont run tops until they are actually warmed up. He doesnt say he has a problem. It should run fine from cold, just not full tilt go. It is probably factory lean still, so changing the boot asap, may not be necessary and for a newbie, just invites trouble.
We certainly agree on one thing though please dont pull the carb apart "just to give it a good cleaning".

Lastly, Welcome Brandon! From your moniker I assume you're a Georgia tire dealer (or I've read it completely wrong!). Does that mean you have some mechanical aptitude?

Thanks for the input guys, I'm excited about the bike and will surely keep reading the topics on the site.

yes you are correct, I am in the tire business but only on a wholesale level so as far as my 'wrenching' abilities go I'm def a newby but have potential.

okay, I found the 'intake boot' (manifold coupler) was a jerry rigged part seemed to be cut from some kind of radiator hose.
It is severely cracked and of course causing issue with performance.

My question is:
Can I just go to autoparts and get the correct diameter hose and cut it to size or should I get one from HD??

I have also read about a so called 'super boot'

any direction you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
B.

You should probably get one from HD. They are about 15 bucks and a hell of a lot better than taking the time to cut or buy a hose which isnt' guaranteed to work anyway. Ask for Part # 27443-00Y

The Boot has a certain conformation that makes it more suitable than hose alone, just not strong enough, or not as strong as re-enfoced auto hose, and that stuff will not stay with out stops to hold it clamped, so the carb slowly backs out - lol - dirt trackers in the short races did'nt care, figured it would last the race, the cautious used springs - then came Dan! - lol

Went to the Harley store (w/o part#) and they looked at me like I had 3 heads...
Ordered the superboot from Dan/ebay. We'll see how that works.
Thanks for the input!

Wait, you went in there WITHOUT a part number? Is that why they looked at you like you had 3 heads? That P/N is a standard Harley part number and it shouldnt matter what you need it for.

dan's superboot is a critical purchase if/when you catch the mod bug. there's a reason it's called super.

It's a Buell only part number.
Fwiw: still running a stock boot without bracing whatsoever.

Hmm when I got a new boot, it was a standard Harley part... Maybe there is a coresponding Harley P/N?

It only fits the blast and it's blast only pt number. Did you go to a Buell/Harley dealer? They'd have the part number. I'm not sure what the current policy is for non-Buell Harley dealers is, as it used to be they couldn't orderBuell parts (and they wouldn't even try).

Dan's boot is on da way so I won't have to deal with HD's 'buelloney' anymore. (rock)
