Old Subarus had this type of thing with the timing belts. They were non-interference engines, and most mechanics didn't know this. They'd tell someone, "Oh, your timing belt broke, the engine is scrap now." Well, usually it would sit around until someone offered $100 for the "broken Subaru" sitting in the yard. It was usually regarded as wise to have a friend help you tow the car around a corner at least before swapping the timing belts out and driving it home. Otherwise, apparently, people got really rather pissed when you fixed it in their driveway & drove off.
