From what I understand running the K&N filter will cause the bike to run lean, and to compensate for that greater air flow you need to make the carb run richer. I my question is, and this is a qualitative question, "How much difference does that really make?" I guess I'm asking for someone to give me a sales pitch on me making those changes.

Running lean can cause to MAJOR ENGINE FAILURE.

Plus Jets cost like $5, and you can put them in yourself in 30 minutes.

if you look on the forums about cars, you can find a lot of people who bought a K&N for a car but didn't notice a result. I'm just wondering if the difference is not really worth the bother on the Blast.

Note the stock air filter and the K&N flow almost the same amount - big waste of money in my opinion, and I wasted it twice - lol

I asked because the K&N site is suspiciously short on hard data about any improvements.

With a K and N you get a washable filter, that is it.
If it is less restrictive you will need to jet accordingly or you will run lean and possibly ruin your engine.

Fuel injected cars will have the computer that will make all the necessary changes to keep the optimum air fuel ratio, so you would probably not see any improvement except at full throttle, meaning the restriction may be less at full throttle.

2005 @ up had stock washable filters as well - lol - a new one ordered would be washable as well.

I recently put one of these K&N filter on my bike:

http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod= bu-5000

I think I have stock jets in my carb. #42/#170? I think.
This isn't going to lead to MAJOR ENGINE FAILURE, is it?

That's what I've been running for 3,000 miles and all is well…
but I think I've got the 45 pilot jet. Easy to change, and I'd do it anyway - regardless of filter

You'll be fine. Now that your blast is running right you can ride it over to my house and I'll "help" you change the slow jet ( just need to check stock first).

Oooo... thank you, Gearhead.
I will take you up on that offer, and give you a call once I have purchased the #45 jet.
