Tricks for that until you change the cable, and washer/o-ring is back out about 3 threads, add a layer of teflon tape, and a cut over sized fat o-ring - cut up - about 14 to 22 in/lbs - go in the low side - should make it pretty oil tight from there, but if there is a kink in the primary vent or blockage, then oil will leak down from the adjuster - oil pressurized through the cable jacket - end to end - lol

So I've changed the trans fluid with Mobil 1 15W50 and adjusted the clutch (turned bolt counterclockwise until it lightly seated, then a little past 1/4 turn clockwise until I was able to put the spring plate in). It seems like the higher the rpms the faster I need to be with the shift lever to get a somewhat okay shift. Does that sound correct? At low rpms movement of just the shift lever takes about a second while at high rpms doing such results in tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-clunk. If I go slightly faster with the lever it's kind of like tat-tat-clunk. Yet other times it seems almost fine.

2-3 shifts always seem to sound the best, it's just a nice, fairly quite clunk. At high rpms a 3-4 shift almost has the same sound as a 1-2 shift but not as loud nor is the tat-tat as pronounced and not as long.

I hope I'm making sense here.

For faster rpms, shift faster (but with purpose).
A "slow" shift is kind of misleading. Watching in horror as one of my friends, who never rode anything but a dirtbike, jam through the gears on my Blast, is where the "fast" shifting comes from. Its not necessarily a slow shift as much as jamming it through the shift. Maybe I'm not making sense! You CAN shift a Blast quickly, just not with the same reckless abandon as a dirt (or Jap) bike.

Did you adjust the cable too?

I guess I'll try playing around with how fast I shift. It sounds like the slowest speed that gets a clunk instead of grinding is the ticket. Did I get that somewhat right?

I adjust the screw behind the spring plate followed by the cable. Now I'm being paranoid that maybe I overfilled the fluid. What puzzles me is the fact that I seem to never have an issue with 2-3 shifts. Those have never given me any trouble.

If you put in only 1 quart, you're not overfilled (as long as you drained it fully). It takes 1 quart.

If everything is adjusted correctly and you're still having trouble, then it may be in the transmission. Having someone else ride it who is familiar with Blast, Sportster or earlier Buell transmissions should be able to tell you if there is a problem. (Dont get your Kawasuzihondamaha friend to do it because it wont shift the same and they wont have a clue).

It's not that dissimilar to my old 1989 XL1200 with the 4-speed and chain drive. It would sometimes miss gears and clunk a lot. That's why I kind of ignore it. It hasn't happened since I posted the last time, so maybe it just seemed like it was more often.

I'm in the middle of pulling the airbox to rejet. The Service manual (I got off this site) says there should be hex screws to remove at the 6oclock position (filter side) Mine look like rivets. Do I pull the bracket (goes to crankcase?) It's a 2008. If so, how tight do I put it back in? Thanks, in advance.
-Robin
Ok, so I went ahead & pulled the hex screw from the crankcase. Put it back in. All seems well. My rejet is done! Only other thing I ran into was when I pulled the screw from the airbox those gnurled nut things come with the screws. Is anyone else having this, or do I have a crap airbox?
Checked the weather & there's no rain imminent - I'm going for a ride!

Thanks for the thumbs up Erik!

Next question : I hear a fast "rat-a-tat-tat" at higher RPM's (right before I shift). It's most prominent in lower gears.
Is that an indication that my Primary is too tight? I specifically had the spacer removed at the 1K (which was done at 3K) by the dealer. I'm happy to go loosen it, per the instructions here.

So I picked up an 01 blast today for my fiance to ride on cause she is short and I seem to have a small leak when the bike is warm on the clutch cable. It seems to be leaking between the to lower metal pieces shown in the picture. What would cause this and what should I do to fix it.

Thanks,
Ray

Check that your primary vent hose is not clogged, or bent. Or perhaps you just had cables lubed?

I have a 2002 Buell Blast that I am doing some changes to. This is my first bike ever and I got a good deal on it but I don't like the color so I'm painting it. I would also like to replace the big bulky front headlight with something sportier and would like to replace the stock mirrors with something like what EZ has pictured on his bikes. I'd also love to lose some of all of that extra plastic they have everywhere. Any suggestions as to where to start, get parts, mod specifications, etc? I'm novice here but I'm enjoying the work so far. Thanks!

Dont paint, replace the body parts. It'll be easier and a scratched piece of used bodywork will look better than anything painted. Unless 'professionally' done, the paint tends to flake easily and the plastics will end up being worthless. Some will also trade for your colour.
Black is the most sought after colour and will command the highest price. Body colours are : Black, blue, "grape", yellow, white, red and orange. They can also be had rather cheaply on e-bay if you are willing to wait or dont mind a few scratches. They can also be accented with stripes or graphics using a variety of adhesive materials.
The black plastic covers are easy to remove.
Did I mention ebay? Also check the Badweb classifieds here and on the "twin" side.

There's lots you can do but decide whats the most important thing you want. Some want power, better seating, lighting, rearsets, handlebars, etc. I would ride it a bit and see what needs changing to better suit you. If you favour the long rides (100+ miles and more), then you may want to focus on seating and bars. If dragging your knee is important, then rearsets, tires, suspension and bars might be your direction. A cool looking bike is nice, but if you hate riding it, then whats the point?

Nice job EZ!

It is always a good thing to clean things up a little every now and again, that way it is not an impossible task when it absolutly HAS to be done......

Thank you for the welcome. Everyone says check eBay but there isn't much on eBay. I've also looked at craigslist and several other places and haven't found much in the way of parts to replace the plastic. I can do without black so that's not a problem. I'd also prefer not to have yellow. The closest thing I found to finding parts was through an HD dealer who wanted over $420 for all the parts. So if you have any specific direction I will gladly take it. Thanks!

Watch ebay. You probably wont find exactly what you want right away. But it will come up for sale. You're also not likely to find a complete set. Though it happens, but you'll probably have to piece a set together and $420 sounds like a really good price for a set of new body panels. Sell your old ones to make some money back.
Patience will pay off. You can also contact the people who are frequently parting out Blasts through ebay to see what they have. They'll probably put it up for sale if they think they have a buyer.
If your bodywork is in good shape, the quickest way to devalue your bike is to paint them : (
And dont pay too much for stuff. Find out what the stuff is worth new first. When Blast turn signals were $6 new, I'd see them sell regularly for $15+ on ebay!!!!

I've been watching eBay and they don't have much offered lately. I've been looking at painting my parts as a temp solution because they are in some pretty rough and sad shape with plenty of really deep scratches and breaks that I am trying to fill. $420 for the midnight black new parts may sound good but I don't have that kind of money

Well, if they are in that bad shape you have nothing to lose by painting them! If you do a Badweb "thumper forum" search and you should find the others who've painted their plastics and what worked well for them.
Good luck and I may have already mentioned this, but think about what you really want to accomplish with your Blast. It will make the time and money you spend on mods much more enjoyable.

The Little Kids Blast went from red to flat black out of a rattle can and it looks pretty good.

I started painting the parts this week. It doesn't look fully professional but it looks a lot better than what is did and I'm not done working on them yet. I would like to do more mods and put more money into it but this is my first bike and first time riding so I'm not trying to put to much cash into it yet. I guess I've thought about fixing the blast up a bit and riding it till I get used to things and I've thought about reselling it down the line to get something else.....of course I want to stick with Buell....lol. Or I may find I love my little blast and start doing all sorts of mods. I just couldn't see myself riding around on a beat up, scraped up, purple blast even to start....lol. Thank you for all your help!!!

Welcome! The 2009 was a Buell Blast. The 2010 was just a Blast. As far as I know 2010 was the last year. I don't know when the last one was actually made or if they're still 'making' 2010's ?

Naw but HD ordered a bunch made before Buell shut down - knowing they would do just that.
Speculation was/is as many as 10 to 15 thousand where made and as low as only 2 thousand - and so far HD has yet to release the 2010 manufacturing number.

I knew you'd know, if anybody would. Will be interesting when we finally get the numbers and if we'll ever know which/when the last one was built.

Just the mention again of "Buell shut down" gets my blood boiling. Still hard to believe : (

Hello Everyone,

Will have a blast in a few weeks 2002 with 900 miles on it.has a v@h exhaust, the rest is stock. Here is my question, i want to swap out handlebars, superbike bars probably, but i read on the forum that you guys cut off 1.5 inches per side to match original handlebar length.can i keep the superbike bars and not cut them down? i wouldnt mind the extra length since the original bars seem to narrow for me.Owner changed oil with screaming eagle synthetic, will change primary myself.any tips would be appreciated.
