Is the dreaded intake boot problem one I will always have to deal with? (stock air box)
I like to go out of town frequently on my bike,and I use it for everyday to & from work.
Did I make a mistake buying this thing?
I knew I was taking a risk by getting a non Japanese model but wow!
As it is I'm waiting for yet another part so I can continue riding. I've invested so much money in this thing and it seems I've ended up with a really beautiful bike that's needier than a princess.
After I get the new clutch cover & cable on, anyone near the Orlando area want to buy a really clean low mileage 02 Blast?

I have not heard of anyone having problems with the stock airbox installed.

FL rider- You're kidding right? I've put 41,000+ miles on my Blast, and I've only replaced one carb boot.

Hopefuly once you get over the little stuff that the previous owner screwed up the bike will be reliable.

FL-Rider, As Jprove said, if you keep your stock airbox, you will not have problems with the carb boot.

They do break with the stock airbox, just not nearly as often. I've gone through one.

FL - you don't have to put the OEM boot back on. You can use something stronger and avoid this problem. Here is a link to one such product:

Heck, that looks just like fuel filler neck hose. And I know that that stuff will not bend. Should be availible through most auto parts stores ( Fuel filler neck hose- comes in black only as far as I know).

Man-

I STILL can't get over everyone with alleged Intake Boot Problems (tm). GET OVER IT. The fault lies with whoever did the installation.

Things to keep in mind:

* There is a torque spec listed for the intake boot clamps. DO NOT OVERTORQUE.

* Try mounting up the airbox completely before you tighten the intake boot clamps.

I MIGHT be able to understand people who pop the boots with non-stock airboxes (though I haven't had that experience, either!). With the stock airbox, broken boots are a sign of SOME kind of trouble.

MAYBE you're using some super corrosive fuel. MAYBE you've had a BUNCH of VICIOUS intake backfires. MAYBE you have a parts guy who puts a box cutter to your intake boot. To me, those things are SO much more likely than the silly design flaw so many Blasters believe exists in the intake.

PLEASE explain to those of us who do not have these problems exactly WHY we don't have these problems....

Please repeat after me: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BLAST INTAKE BOOT.

Lol! Wow I wasn't expecting that kind of response!Like I was talking about Bigfoot or something.
It only happened once since I've owned it, but once was enough for me not to trust her anymore. I've owned 14 different bikes in the 20 years I've been riding and have never had a mechanical difficulty of any kind (this includes an 87 sporty known to have a clutch basket prob)until I got this bike which has avalanched a slew of bizarre leaks and such. It seems particularly odd that all this happens with only 3800 miles on the clock, and the fact that when I get a used bike I replace any common wear items with new ones.
I will give her credit for being the most fun bike I have ever owned in my life!
Gas mileage is better than some 250cc scooters! I find her extremely comfortable for long distances. Weight & balance are perfect, and she's just plain beautiful!
I forgot about the sound......oh yes the sound!
Anyway, I worked in a bike shop for a few years as well and never saw anything with problems like these. I think reading all the horror stories you guys & gals tell about yours don't help me feel like I didn't make a foolish mistake getting this thing.
Well,I have an appointment on the 6th of May to get her up to snuff ( live in a condo, no garage & not allowed to do any maintenance at home)& hopefully back to traveling.(yikes!)
At least I know that some of the best people ride Blasts! Thanks.

LOL - the majority will last a lifetime with little care, of course on a board dedicated to the bike - you learn of any troubles they have ever had - it skews the percentage - lol - once you get that puppy sorted - it should be smooth sailing!

The carb boot is not expensive so I bought an extra one, and it fits nicely in the little compartment under the seat.

in truth the only major issues that I have had were related to
1) My crash (not my fault I was rear ended)
and
2) an unsupported carb (I was one of the first)

After the crash rebuild I had a bunch of little issues (like the front brake rotor) though nothing that I couldn't fix. As for the Carb Boot I have only broken one and that was before I found/built a proper carb support. Tires are the only real problem with the Blast Stock Dunlop tires suck, Pirelli's wear out too fast and Avons are great when they warm up but greasy as hell before then.
It's funny that everyone thinks that the first model year has problems, because I really haven't had any. I change my fluids regularly and pay attention to the rest of the bike though I did have the infamous "Rocker Box Gasket" leak but mine was actually fixxed before the notice came out. I'm not a fan of the V&H exhaust I love the WB but like others my header has a crack (small one that so far JB Weld's held), unlike others I have a spare (that is on its way to Performance Coatings as soon as I find it in all my stuff. I was a guinea pig for a lot things I tried out a lot of stuff, most of it I liked, though don't get me started on handlebars. I had to store mine for 3 years so I'm a bit behind on mods but since I'm traveling again I'll be adding parts over the next year...cams, 515cc, flow the head, rear shock to name a few things. I haven't figured out exactly what or in what order; though probably cams first since I know I'm staying mild (B50?). This forum/board is great for bouncing ideas and for getting advice. The Blast is a great bike for a guy who likes to tinker it only took 2 oil changes a new battery and day in my sonic cleaner for the carb to return my Blast to road worthiness after 3 years of in activity.

That B50+WB combo with 23 discs is the bomb! My red bike is now just silly fun and suprises a lot of folks! If you do the headwork - step up to the B70 and enjoy - still mild enough for the street but the kick at 3800 is fun!

you know where to find more disks??? Will standard MX WB disks work on the Blast can? Not sure my wife won't kill me for making it LOUDER but who knows. As for the head that will come after I 515cc it my plan is to leave it at JET for a while and let them play with it once I get everything else I want done to it...a winter project...though this winter or next who knows

For that combo - 45/175 jetting, air screw 2 3/4 out, call WB thats where I got my extra discs and the longer bolts. With the B50 cleaning up the mid range, and the WB taking care of top and bottom - the acceleration curve is very linear and fun! Scott ran with the stock discs for a couple of weeks, not that much quieter - and the kick difference with the discs is noticable - well he noticed it - lol - I never even tried it after checking out Aaron's dyno work with disc systems on Suppertrapp - went straight to 23 (recommended 21 to 23 discs)and was quite pleased with the results.

I just got back from the local H-D dealer who sold me a boot part number 27442-00Y. He said he got it straight out of the 01 blast manual. Will this boot work? He could not find a part number 27443-00Y.

Something ain't right. I've got an 00/01 parts books and it's 27443-00Y. I punched 27442-00Y into chicago harley's website, they don't even have it in their computer. Even if you never order from them, their web search for HD/Buell part numbers is very useful for info gathering. You got a picture of the part you bought?

Ha, guess the H-D employee cannot read. He told me the part number, said the"3" was not in existence. Just popped the baggie out of the H-D bag and sure enough it is the part number you guys said and the one I had written on my list LOL.
