Soooo. After finally getting the Blast!® going good (after my clogged Evap canister was removed)... On Thanksgiving night, my stock exhaust cracked.

Not being one to spend $200 on a pipe and cheap muffler, or $400 on a Kerker, only to cut it up... I started looking for a better solution.

A friend who works at a major motorcycle racing/component company stopped by and took a look at it. The next day he showed up with a couple of different flanges to find one that would work.

We got that squared away, and he went to play on the mandrel bender. In 3 days, I had the flange, and a tube that represented the initial bend to get a bottom exit exhaust system going. He also dropped by a couple different mufflers to play with.

Then he got busy... and the bike sat. Eventually, I got bored/drunk/tired of waiting... 2 hours of backyard engineering later, and I got a system that kinda works... temporary of course, because there is no way anyone in their right mind would leave this setup on the bike... but essentially it's 10" or so of 1 7/8" tube, mandrel bent, custom exhaust gasket to work with the flange we picked, and a Ti/Carbon slip on that is half of a 450cc dirt bike system.

The result is unbelievably loud, vulgar, and just a little bit awesome. Picture is huge. If you can't figure out who the company he works for is... well...

I think we mostly have trouble with the stock exhaust because it's a heavy, thin, mild steel piece of crap, poorly supported by rubber mounts.

That said, the bike has 12k miles on it, not like it didn't put in it's time. This is more about the shorty, and not about the pos stock unit.

Yes, vulgar! (LOL!).
How about running that pipe further back so the muffler is at the back and not in the way of your leg? It'll still sound awesome, but not that loud in your ears (only others ears).

The plan is to make it a bottom exit like most the Blast!® systems. This just happened to be an in-between stage. Right now the pipe angles out enough that my leg fits snugly between it and the motor on the peg.

It's louder than a Harley twin-cam with fishtails. A little too snappy to my taste, but hopefully the longer pipe will take care of that.

Well, I'd love to have a 'scrambler' version of a high pipe! Also if you exit the exhaust about the license plate length you can have it fairly loud and its way past your ears for it to matter. You'll also have zero ground clearance problems! Just a thought....

Maybe one day I'll have time again to customize and maybe use up some of them parts on the shelf!

I was going to try an under-tail exit, but it looks pretty complicated. The kickstand is in the way of a left side exit, so that only leaves right side... and if I change the rearsets, that might change it significantly.

The good news is, I think I'll have plenty of access to the toys (Tools) to play around with different setups in the future. I can't believe that there aren't more custom setups on these bikes. Especially given the crappy stock setup, and the DIY nature of a lot of the members here.

Actually, there are a lot of custom exhaust set ups here. Its just that the stock configuration is simple and works, so there isnt much need to do anything else. Well that and the rubber mounted engine means the further back you go with the exhaust, the more unreliable its bound to become.

TuberBlast

RaceBlast left side

RaceBlast tail

If the muffler isnt too big, there's just enough space to stuff it on the left side and not be in the way.

One more non traditional exhaust!
(In a bike I'd love to have!)

I have a video... it kinda exceeded the capability of my cameras cheesy mic, so I'm gonna have to try a better recording. Also gonna try some ride-by sound clips too, once I get my buddy on it.

The can I'm planning on using on the final setup is an RS-5 size Aluminum can, cut down 4.5". Still has much more sound deadening than this one (RS-4 size).

It's currently so loud, I don't know if I could ride it for any extended period of time. I guess I'll find out tomorrow, I'm probably gonna ride 18 miles to work and back.

This is loud as sin:

I made this with all pre-manufactured bends, pipe and cones. It took me a weekend, mostly cause my welding skills suck so it took a lot of time grinding down the welds and re-welding it.

I've got something like the Peashooter designed, it'll be built after the new year.

I made my own flanges using 16ga mild steel. I just stacked a few pieces of pipe on top of each other, sized in 1/8" increments. Then welded the engine-side and rounded it over with a grinder. Looks and works great!

Out of curiosity, is the flexible stainless exhaust tubing off limits for some reason? Seems a really simple way to route things. I have no experience with it, so I dunno if there are any drawbacks (other than the not-as-smooth interior).

Do you mean the ribbed stuff that looks like its off an old Harley (Panhead era)?

If it is, the ribs will affect exhaust flow and it would likely come apart from vibration.

Or post a link to what exhaust you are talking about.

Yeah, I was thinking of this stuff.

I would think that giving the system a little more flex would help the header bolts, at least. I've seen this woven stuff as well, which would be pretty good for curved joints.

I think the stainless steel would be better, but if you do care too much about performance than either should work and wrapped no one will know! I'd be intereted how it would turn out. Though I'm thinking that stuff might cost more than just buying a pipe?
There really isnt hat much of a problem with the header bolts. The tend to break more when other parts of the exhaust mounting breaks. Use antisieze and torque to specs by the book and double check it when hot and you should be fine. I wouldnt worry that much about it, unless your exhaust gets loose.

I've been riding it for about 800 miles this way now. The Carbon can blew out it's packing once already. I jetted up to 175 (I had a CA 165 in it) and it still seem like it's running a little lean, but not overly so.

I'm planning on finishing the bottom exit pipe soon so I can stop wearing earplugs EVERYWHERE.

Fun little system though, gets LOTS of looks.
