Hi All,

Just got a 2000 Blast a couple of months ago. It's my first Buell and my first bike so everything is pretty new to me (never worked on a bike before).

My bike: Good condition (appears to be); 10,600 miles; Vance and Hines exhaust put on by a previous owner a couple of years ago

My problem: When the bike is under load I get a momentary loss of power, and feel a "cough" through the airbox. I can also hear a clicking sound when this happens. It usually happens at high RPMs, or when I am asking for the bike to respond. For example, if I'm going 40 in fourth gear and start going up a hill it might do it. It usually does it around 40-60 mph, although it has happened in 2nd gear as well going around 20 mph (was pushing the bike though). Once the bike gets going at high speed it doesn't seem to have any problems (e.g. it was going 80 on the highway this past weekend fine), but its getting it up there that is the problem.

What I've done/additional info: After reading the forums, I replaced Das Boot. Problem still occurring. Two weeks later, before I got a chance to do anything else, the bike died at a stoplight. Had it towed to a mechanic. The mechanic said that the battery was shot, and I got a new batter and an oil change. He said that was the cause of all my problems. He did also mention that the rear gasket was leaking a little bit, but wasn't serious at this point - just keep an eye on it. So I took the bike out this past weekend but the problem still occurs - cough through the airbox and the bike loses power for a second then keeps going.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm a big fan of the forum and can't wait to get my bike up and running at full capacity.

Welcome Mr grimm!
Is it jetted for the new exhaust? 2000's were jetted the leanest and the V & H would would need better jetting (later years could suffer with stock jetting). Should be a 45 pilot/slow jet and a 170 main jet at a minimum.

Backfiring at high rpms could be the rev limiter. It hits redline at about 32mph in first gear or 80 mph in fourth gear. ( I dont remember 2nd or 3rd gears).*

Are you lugging the engine? 40mph in 4th gear going up a hill sounds like you should be using a lower gear.*

I'd hope that the mechanic checked your boot installation. Just because you changed it doesnt mean it was installed correctly (no offense please). Too tight or too loose clamps can still cause it too leak. And having a mechanic look at it doesnt necessarily mean that the mechanic knew what he was looking at.

*I havent ridden a stock Blast in a long time, so those that still do feel free to chime in!
