I think that will cure what ails the Blast. The wife is itching to ride so I thought I'd try and cure the cold start issue.

I was surprised to find it stocked at Surdyke.

Here's a side question...has anyone fitted a different carb on their blast? Does anyone know what models to look for. Would a Mikuni TM 40 work? How about a HSR 42? I could always disconnect the accel pump.

Just thinking ahead in case the auto enrichener (already put on a new coupler) does not cure the carb. The used carbs on eBay are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. I can find new cabs for the same money.

Thanks in advance.

Those two carbs you've mentioned have been used, but I cant tell you any more. If it works on a harley or Buell, it will work on the Blast.
Easiest is to just put the CV carb from a twin HD (or Buell) on your bike. Then you'll have a manual choke. Someone (on the Thumper side of Badweb) also has detailed converting the Blast carb to manual choke.
Have you changed the slowjet to a #45 yet and adjusted the idle mixture screw? (I havent read any of your past posts on this subject).

Any carb that isnt a Blast carb will not be able to use the Blast TPS which means the ignition will run in WOT mode all the time-not a big deal and you probably wouldnt notice the difference. OR you can install a VOES which should do the same thing. The difference between the VOES and the TPS is that the TPS uses variable resistance to change the advance curve and the TPS is a vacuum switch. To my knowledge there isnt any advantage to the TPS because there is still only 2 advance curves in the ignition module. So why they used a variable rate switch is unknown to me.

If you use a twin CV carb it is advisable (as you stated) to disconnect the accel pump and you need to use the Blasts vacuum piston slide spring. The jet needle should also be swapped.

I dont know which carbs you're looking for on e-bay. Blast carbs tend to be overpriced. Twin carbs can be had for a reasonable price, but you much watch for them and make sure it comes with the choke/enrichener cable attached. Most anything in the performance carb range will be expensive.

Thanks for the advice.

If the part doesn't cure the issue I'm stumped.

I've been repairing and tuning my own vehicles for about 30 years...but sometimes I get stumped. I've done everything I know to clean and tune the carb (jets were done when I installed the Buell Pro Exhaust and Intake 10 years ago). I've studied the breakdown charts, the tips here, the tech stuff on that carb elsewhere and all I can think is the Auto Enrichener electrical parts have failed. It runs fine once warm. Refuses to start when even the least bit "cold" as in sitting for a few hours after running.

For $55 shipped the AR is cheaper than finding a used carb...I just hope it's the fix. The poor little P3 sat out in the weather for many years after the Wife started popping out babies...we have no garage. The O-ring on the fuel tank failed and the tank filled with rain water. Even though the petcock was closed somehow the carb was filled with water and gas...and the primary.

I cleaned everything including all the passages and jets with solvent and compressed air and drained and restored the internals. I have a suspicion that the AR mechanism got ruined by the water. Not sure if the TPS works or not.

Any ideas on a simple test of the TPS?

you should be able to read the ohms on the TPS.

I have never had good luck cleaning jets. They are cheep enough to just replace them.

What jets did you install? I hope you didn't follow the Dynojet instructions.

You can unplug the TPS and that will also disconnect the AE. The TPS is very unlikely to cause hard start problems.
If your ignition module is on the way out, low voltage can cause a hard start. Disconnecting the headlight when starting usually bypasses this problem and watching the LED flash on start-up will also tell you if that is a problem.
If you've completely disassembled the carb, I think you may be looking too hard for a problem. And if the bike runs fine when warm, then I'm thinking you didnt cause a problem either.

I've never spent more than $50 on a used CV carb, but then again I didnt need one!

What jets are you using?

When I get it apart I'll be able to tell you for certain. That was damn near 8 years ago I rejetted the carb...

Surdkes claims the part is stocked by HD and will ship on the 19th. We'll see. It came up obsolete when I tried to get it over the counter.
