I have had the blast for about 3 months now, this morning riding into work suddenly the shifting got really loose and after I shifted down, I was unable to shift up. On the drive home from work I started to just try and shift it while holding in the clutch and managed to get it to shift from 2nd to 3rd to 4th. After driving for a while I was only able to get it to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Now, I parked it and was able to shift it with my hand down to first and back to second. I have read a lot of the posts trying to identify a similar problem, but I want to be sure of what it is.

Can you get neutral? Got me - you can try the shift pawl adjustment if you can get it into 3rd.

Hi and thanks for this great site!
I recently got an 01 blast with 25k on it. The problems began immediately, the previous owner was quick to point out that he had never ridden it and that he fixes bikes and sells them. It seemed cherry and I didn't do a full inspection(lesson#1). I trusted the nice seller(lesson#2) when he said it was commute ready and that he would assist with any tech questions I might have(he has not). First I noticed that it would drizzle on the right top side mostly at high rpms. More important, it only had 3 gears. Ok well I love this thing and I'm going to ride it and I'm going to figure this out. I attempt a clutch adjustment or four. Then I tightened my chain too much and that's when after a couple of miles the real problems began. So here we are. I have no gears. I can however get it to go into first by giving the bike a shake to the left. When I release the clutch it binds up and whines horribly and shudders. I opened her up to see if a pawl adjustment might help. She looks alright inside. Chain tension bar has three perfect chain grooves as to be expected. There is some wearing in the front part of the cover. I was surprised to find out the front sprocket bolt and the large clutch sprocket assembly bolt are the same size. The middle of the drum spins when I try to get the nut off. I'm about to try depressing the back brake to see if that helps. One more note: the front sprocket bolt was nowhere near 200 lbs. Torque value.
I'm posting this because I just read,"Do a pawl adjustment if you can get in 3 gear." Uh right. I also read that 00-01 have some bolt loosening issue on the shift drum, but I can't find a write up about that. Also one specific ? What is a flat in regards to the turn of a wrench?
Any advise or tips at this point would be awesome I've been down for about ten days now and am holding out on the shop route. Too broke besides I'm getting an education. Intimate knowledge of the beast.
Thanks and I'll be close.

First - grab a manual service and parts - here - http://buellridersonline.com/forum/showthread.php? t=6800&highlight=Blast+Manuals
The clutch and stator hub bolt should be different sizes, the clutch is reverse threaded, also you need to use a "special tool" - actually a 4 1/12" by 2" by 1/16 thick piece of steel - round the edges of the 2" sections - it goes between the teeth of both gears to hold in place while turning a nut. a flat is the face side of a nut - the average nut having 8 flats. Easiest bike you will ever work on - the clutch and stator rotor and chain can come off as a unit as soon as you get those nuts off, though you have to pull hard because of the magnets in the stator rotor - lol - but it will come off.
If your doing the shift pawl adjustment there are other things to do as well while in there to improve the primary's functions adjust drum pin length - easy, chamfer stator wire protection plate edges - easy, add to detent clips and new detent plate as well. The primary adjustment instructions are wrong - go out 25 flats - should be fine there - if any serious noise go in a few flats. Clutch adjustment better loose than tight - so soft bottom and then 1/4 turn out and a tad more ok if needed to fit collar.

Hey thanks EZ,
I got everything out and as I pulled the chain and clutch out I heard something clink on the ground. The clip holding the pawl arm thing that turd the decent place was off. One of the pins was a tad longer so I locktite and tapped it back it. Didn't chamfer the stator. Cleaned everything. Then I realized to detect will only turn to three gears??? I also can't figure out were to get parts associated with this work. Everything looked clean and undamaged. Except the tension shoe. I also somehow stripped the threads on the adjuster(primary cover).
One note is that I had to pull on the clutch adjustment ball arm to get it all the out before adjusting. It also helps to pull on the cable at the level while tightening the shift cord nut. All my work got atleast 2 gears back and they seemed much smoother than before. Obviously I'm going back in but I want the clips rings gaskets shoe and cover before I do. Since the threads were damaged and I don't intend to repair I epoxyed the adjustment nut right in the sweet spot. About 5/8 " of threads showing between lock nut and base of bolt head. I just want to run it and feel the gears and see if anything changed.
I downloaded the service manual. I am surprised at how simple the whole process is and can't wait to do it again when I get the parts. Any ideas where I can obtain the stuff I need? Also if you have any feed back about anything I've done I'm eager to do this.

5/8" is likely way too loose on the adjustment. Helicoil the cover and don't over tighten the jam nut (or don't try and adjust without loosening the jam nut).
An X-Buell dealer can order the parts. Local or online.
