I just changed das boot and put the clamps on tight: it gives power night and day better than before and doesn't die when I open the throttle, but now when I let off the throttle it sputters and stalls. I hear a popping coming from the airbox when this happens. BTW the carburetor gasket? behind the venturi ring looks terrible, I'm surprised its still in one piece.

Thats part of it - replace gasket, sounds like primary can be too tight as well, and the air screw may need readjusting.

I changed the gasket and put seafoam in the oil, changed the oil, and in the gas tank. I readjusted primary, but the problem persists! Still giving power great but when I let off throttle sometimes it will bog down and die, still sputtering near the airbox.

Are you stock? And how did you adjust the primary? Both questions are important.

Yes stock, adjusted primary by sound method, not sure I found the sweet spot though. I lowered the idle speed and that helped a bit, would a high idle speed cause it to stall or flood? Also the gears are feeling very tight, almost stuck, hard to find neutral before I start. I put in a full quart in the primary when I changed fluid. A couple days ago I did ride through about shin deep wet clay and mud. And where is the air screw and what to adjust it to?

A high idle speed is a sign of a vacuum leak/intake leak - your boot may not still be installed right, or your o-ring in your manifold may be shot, or an exhaust leak, or a bad slide, or bad safeties that need disabling - still - the air screwis the little tube by the bowl side on the left, there is usually a little sauder plug there that needs removing, then soft bottom it, then two turns out.

Ok, took it to Harley and surprisingly they found the problem quick and fixed for only 115 dollars(whew!) I think the problem was that I put too much seafoam in the oil and it thinned it out, they said it was all over the float bowl and the carb I think, and apparently it fouled my 35 dollar racing spark plug, lol. Anyways, I just sold the thing, it just didn't feel like my kind of bike. Bought a 2000 Vulcan 800 and love the power, though it isn't nearly as easy to turn and handle. Thanks for the answers fellas and ride hard!
