Is it normal for the shifter shaft to be loose when the primary cover is removed? It's a 2001 blast it was shifting fine when I rode it but I didn't ride it too long. I just picked it up and am replacing some gaskets that were leaking. Anything else I should check out while I have this thing apart?

Yes it is. While you are in there you will want to do a few things.

First I would remove the plate that holds the stator wires and remove the sharp edges. Then I would splooge some silicone under the plate to glue the wires in place to keep them from vibrating and shorting the stator. Then get a new shift drum clip and remove the shift detent plate. Remove the shift pins, and either replace them with pins that fit tightly in the shift drum or even the lenghts of the existing pins and glue them inplace so they don't wobble around and replace the detent plate and clip. Next is you want to do the shift pawl adjustment, adjust the primary chain so it doesn't make noise, yet not too tight to where it causes the clutch basket to be pulled out of alignment, adjust the clutch and you should be shifting like a real bike.

If I where you I would go to our search, pick the Blast section, type in Shift pawl adjustment, select - all words, days and 999999999999999999999999 - till that memory space is good and filled, then hit search.

The first five should do.
