I just bought a 2003 Blast. It was near my home-town so it's on my step-dad's truck. He's coming up to drop it off tomorrow. I'm totally excited.

I haven't been on a bike since my MSF class 6 months ago, so I'll be taking short rides around the neighborhood before I see real street use.

This is my first motorcycle, so I'm sure I'll have tons of questions for you folks later. Right now, I'm wondering about some slight rust on the exhaust header. I figure I can take it off with a steel brush, but should I put high-temperature paint on it to prevent the rust from returning?

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Edgonzalez!

The header rust will return, it will not hurt anything, so save your money and get an aftermarket that has a nice finish.

So just ride it!

Ed,

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Blast. You've made a great choice for a first bike. I've had mine about 6 months now and I love it more every day.

Spending time here on badweatherbikers is a great way to get up to speed on these great little machines. We've got some very knowledgeable people here that have been great about sharing their information.

Your plan for a lot of short rides is a good one. I put my first 100 miles on my Blast and was never more that 5 miles from home. Remember this is not a competition, never let your body go where your mind has already been. Just go slow and ride your own ride. Don't push and do something before you're ready for it. You'll be fine.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome Ed. I started on a Honda Rebel 250. A few months after that I upgraded to a Blast I got my Blast back in 2003 and have been riding it ever since. It is a fun little bike, and it goes and goes. Other than gettin a VRod as my next bike for cursing, I love my Blast. I hope you do too. There is a lot of good info and people here. Enjoy and be safe.

Be careful, the more you ride the little Blastard, especially in town, the more hooked you'll be. I went from a Gold Wing to the Blast and, although there are days I'd like more horses and more highway comfort, I can't stop grinning at the beginning or end of my daily commute.

Actually if you can find it find some VHT high temp exhaust paint, and you can cure it with short run times, if the bike gets ridden every day the rust wont come back, the VHT paint tends to hold up pretty good on headers.
Typical application is wire brushing then paint on warm surface (hand on pipe warm) then start for few seconds, and add another light to medium coat, heat it a little. Let dry then ride. Should hold up pretty good unless it simply burns to ash, then your EGT is high, most likely from being slightly lean.
