Erik - Thanks, I am going to make one more attempt to contact V&H by phone today, pulled my records and it has not even been a year since I purchased that exhaust.

Then most likely just order the D&D to get it her, fearing no luck with V&H.

The flat gasket - same as what I refer to as the crush gasket? A part I need to get from HD or would pipecity.com have it?

The flat gasket-I'm assuming he means the thinner square crush gasket as opposed to the thicker tapered crush gasket. Sorry I dont have the part #'S. Pipecity probably carries them or ask the dealer (or aftermarket-all Evo/XL/Big twin gaskets are interchangeable) for both styles (wont hurt to have an extra). I dont really think it makes a difference which one but...

I just spoke with Ryan at V&H and sent him my original order invoice and a pic I took of the end cap. Will see what happens. I guess if I have to go to Riding Into History as a passenger it will not kill me, especially if that means V&H will come through with some sort of assistance. I'll give them a couple days. I can be a very persistent person.

Thanks - I'd like to thank you in person one day over a burger.

Magster, I'd hate to see you miss the ride (as a pilot). It sounds as if the V & H is mostly toast so a few minor 'unapproved fixes' probably wouldnt make a difference.
I dont know what kind of time you have but... I'd safety wire the bolts on the end cap together and silicone it. A 1/16" drill bit goes through the bolts real quick. Safety wire pliers are about $30. Wire is about $10. And instructions on safety wiring can be found through an internet search (it doesnt have to be perfect). Just use bolts instead of the rivets if the holes are elongated and red Loctite them.
Or (simpler) find a used Harley shorty muffler (stock or aftermarket) and replace the V & H with that. All it takes is a standard automobile muffler clamp to attach it to the V & H rear bracket. The bracket will need some slight drilling to get the holes to line up.
A local HD shop (dealer or otherwise) could probably hook you up with a muffler so you dont have to wait for the next swap meet. (ebay too). I'm sure you also know a lot of people who would be willing to help!
Just some ideas from a guy whose to cheap to spend money on his street bike (but the raceBlast....).

Exhaust clamp is 2 1/2", but the muffler should be of the 'turn out' style or at least 'slash cut' otherwise you may need to add on an end piece to turn it away from the tire (somewhat).

Update - tried to do the passenger thing yesterday - made it a half a day. I love riding with my hubby, but I love being the pilot better

New exhaust is on way but while waiting...

Quick stop at Ace Hardware, 2 minutes later left with threaded dowel and two lock washers and lock nuts. Drilled right through the end cap and a little threadlock later was off and running. Total cost: less than $4 bucks.

It may not look pretty but the smile on my face later that night as I enjoyed the band's music drifting through the bike night parking lot says I don't care.

As least I will get some more road time in today and then hopefully new exhaust will be here soon.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Glad you 'fixed' it!
I'd be interested in the headpipe off your old V & H after you get the new exhaust installed (unless you're keeping it).

Any one have a method for unscrewing the endcap bolts on the V&H can? They stripped out quite effortlessly and I would really like to open my can to repack it without taking the can completely off. Thanks

Hey guys! Im planning on replacing my stock exhaust with a Vance and Hines. Do I need to replace my exhaust gasket when I install the new exhaust. If so, where can I get one? Do I have to get the oem gasket from a harley shop? Can I get by without a new gasket? Thank you for all your advice from everyone!!

after being off the bike for a good twenty years (yes i know i am a old fart) but i got the scars from my youth to boast about.

but my question is can a V&H pipe be made to be quiet? as in needed to get to the dmv and would hate to get a fail just do to more noise than the dmv likes.

bike is new to me it is a 01 blast as far as i can tell all stock except the pipe (jets are ?).

but so far it has been broken down and in the shop four as many days as up and running.
just got it home and the boot failed.

DMV??? Your profile says California.

If you still have the CA only EPA charcaol canister connected you will have problems until you disconnect it.

Jets s/b 45/170. 170 is the stock main jet.

What air cleaner are you running? Boots dont split coming home from the shop for no apparent reason. They dont just magically fail on a regular basis unless you have a problem.

dmv = department of motor vehicles.

only had the bike a very short time, the canister is there, but the two hose connections (carb)() are hooked together in a loop.

jets #'s unknown at this time.

air box is all stock dry cone shaped.

as for the "boot" problem it just made it home from the shop (in shop for drive belt/rear pulley and rear tire) running great. then turned into the drive way (gravel up grade) sounded like i was three gears to high and motor died...NO restart. but did some 12 hrs later. but then sounded like it was making pop corn.

now some day or so later..

just got home started it and sound ok. will test ride in the am. (at work 16 hrs and very tired)it is now 11:45 pm been up since 6:am.

there are two government agencys one does not mess with,
one os the fed IRS.
the other is the state of CA dmv office.

both can really mess up your year.

Sorry, I've been in California 20 years and I cant ever recall having to go to the DMV and get an exhaust or any other kind of inspection. Unless you're riding a newly salvaged motorcycle, then they might question it, but the CHP does that. If you are riding a newly salvaged motorcycle then that brings up more questions on your running problems.
A loop doesnt sound as an effective or proper way to bypass the EPA canister.
Plug the vacuum port at the carb.
Plug the large PCV hose at the canister.
Make sure the fuel tank vent hose is open. Until you/we can be absolutely sure it is done this way, any running problems arent worth discussing.

the dmv is for getting my license for riding the bike, as i have been off bikes for 20 years.

today is really the first day i get to do anything with said bike, had it for almost a month and it has been in the shop for other reasons, (mostly waiting for parts)
silly me thinking the dealer would do me good...yea right.
now my turn. but this am need to get my mom to the Drs office so this afternoon i will look and work on it.
but it was running good static last night, i remember reading something about a wire problem someone had while turning rt? but i was very slow and up-right.
i do believe the hoses are ok. but never know. as it was not popping last night.

as for the hoses the two on top are looped together. marked carb-tank small hoses size, the big on on the other end goes to the carb.

i seam to invite the strangest problems in dealing with motors and electrical things.

Packnrat, did you have a class M license 20yrs ago? If so it should still be on your CDL, if it was issued in Ca. I had stopped riding for 15 yrs. but still had the classification on mine.

Oh, class A. Yeah, thats a pain. My friend took his test on my Blast with the V & H on it. I'd take it apart and pack it really tight with new exhaust packing. The Blast isnt really that loud and for a test you shouldnt have the revs too high. Or you can just take the MSF course and the driving test wont be needed (though class A might negate that, but I doubt it). Or find a stock exhaust and put that on.
Or borrow someone else's bike. I think a scooter is legal for the test getting a full MC endorsement.

Follow my abbreviated (or EZ's lengthy) instructions here:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/201 64/76349.html?1247694495.
If the hose is truly just looped, then the carb vacuum port is open (probably). That will cause problems. And you really need to be sure the tank vent is working properly as that will cause problems. I dont want to beat a dead horse, but with a CA Blast, the evap canister is the place to start.

The Blast is really simple and for that reason I think they put their sketchiest mechanics on them. Take it slow and eliminate the easy stuff first. Avoid the "replace everything" approach to repair.
Good luck.

Hi Packnrat,
The other option is to take a Riders Edge course. I took one eariler this year to refresh myself hadn't ridden in about 20 years also. If you take the course and pass you don't have to do the DMV riding part just take and pass the written.
This would aleaviate the part about using your bike. The I took was Thursday Friday Evening Saturday Sunday (actual riding and test for riding part)and then again on Monday evening. I think all HD dealers offer the course.

the school is out at least for now due to working hrs.
as for a scooter there is a size limit deal too small and you only get a scooter not a motorcycle endorsement.
but took the blast out twice yesterday and no problems at all. both short rides. as when i got back from helping my mom on tuesday i took a short nap that ended up at 3 1/2 hrs.
good thing as it was hot.
so just need to buy a bag of steel wool and pack the bugger. only for one day so easy to return to working order.

well went for my first real ride today,
(in 20 years)
bike worked great no problems. picked up some packing for the "muffler".
have a bike cam on order, these things were not around back in the day. even video cam's did not exist. unless you had a very looong ex-cord.
