A great alternative for the stocker Blast:
Thank you goes to JLance!

I decided to change the transmission fluid in the Blast tonight. If you've never done it, that sounds simple. But it requires removing the left foot peg bracket to get access to the derby cover. Someone at Buell deserves a good killing for how difficult it is to get the foot peg bracket off. I've watched Mark do it before so I knew it was hard. I thought I could handle it, but I was wrong.

Not to be defeated, I embarked on a Blast Improvement Project.

A handy gasket I found in a drawer and couple T27 Torx drivers...

All the planets align...

Shazam!

Next problem is the kick stand is right where the oil drain pan needs to go.
A trip to Lows for a piece of rod... Lean the bike to the left to drain the
fluid...

Oh wow, I can even get to the clutch adjustment.

Lean the bike to the right to fill the primary.

Who's your Daddy!!

You can clean that hole up with a nice zinc or SS bolt or a 1/4" plastic hole plug when not in use.

Yeah, but where did he get the Dale Earnhardt commemorative Snap-on tool box to keep his 4 wheel drive, mud truck, bass bote, jon bote, 4 wheeler, dirt bike, Jet ski, deer rifles, hotrod and Blast?

Just kidding. Oops, gotta go, I hear banjo music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toothpick and RTV might work for a while.

If you refill through the vent hole, 1 quart is 2 ounces to much, which is just about right.

Oh, I knew that was coming! LOL!

A lesson from Mr Wizard:
1 oz = 2 tablespoons, which is the usual size of a Nyquil cup (which is almost the size of a shot glass -came with that commemorative toolbox- which is a little more, 1 1/2 oz).
Take a saucepan (or any container) about the size of a Blast primary and transmission. Then dump 2 oz of oil in it. How much does it fill up the pan? Do you really think that little bit of oil makes a difference?

If it were that critical, Buell/HD wouldn't have told us it takes a quart and they would've given us a better level check.

PS as long as its clean, the silicone can work. Not guaranteed though, but you wouldnt be the first of many to seal a leak that way. Run a small bead around it. Pushing it in with a toothpick likely wont work.

If the hole is worn, some teflon tape may help along with the new O-ring.

Kinda off topic, but I saw a documentary on Discovery channel about Hillbillys...and according to THAT the term "Redneck" came about during a particularily nasty coal miner's versus mine owner problem over union breakers...the miners banded together and took off to "war" over it...they identifed themselves by the red bandanas they wore around their necks...hence "Rednecks" How boot dat???

I do believe, to the best of my recollection, that that is, indeed, a true fact.

Wait until I fashion a hillbilly motorcycle stand to drain the primary. I just gotta figger out how to do it.

That's why I said it was 2 ounces too much, which is just about right.

Got an engine lift? They make good stands. I've also used the two jack stands and a long drill bit method.

That's why I said it was 2 ounces too much, which is just about right. Huh?
Dont get it.
Did you actually see how minimal 2 ounces is?

My point, again, is it takes 32 ounces, like the manual says. If anybody thinks it only takes 30 ounces (and you all know who you are), try seeing exactly how much 2 ounces of fluid actually is.

The only reason the manual provided a level is when its needed, helpful if you have a leak and need to add some or a clutch problem, engine seal problem, and you need to diagnose.

You'll have web reading Blasters confused, 30 oz? 32 oz? and they'll get all paranoid about it especially if they're having problems.

Dont make rocket science out of it.

Manual says 30 ounces. 32 ounces is 2 ounces too much. Since 2 ounces isn't much, 32 ounces is just about right. Sorry to confuse.

Okay, I get it now. My manual says 32 ounces. Yours says 30oz. So, 32 oz is 2oz too much, but just about right (since 2oz isnt much either).
Or am I still confused?

So, 30 oz. is right and 32 oz is too much, which is just about right but 32.5 oz is a little too much and not nearly as right, right?

Sorry to hear that GH. Keep us informed and let us know if we can help.

32.5 oz will make your transmission explode, killing all within 500 feet.

Erik - My prayers are with you and her.

That brick wall up above is perfect for me and that recent crack in my skull. Just turn it 90 degrees to the right, and that's me.

It's on tap for this weekend. I'm going to do the Swampy method and a little liquid gasket around the clutch cable. If that doesn't stop the leak, I'll break down and figure out how to put in an o-ring.

It can't be that hard and I can't be that stupid.

Can I?

Wait, don't answer that.

Do you have a small parts grabber to grab that metal thingy that's going to fall into the bottom of your primary case? Unless you have nimble fingers, that is.

Does anyone feel like walking me step by step on how to change the transmission fluid for the first time?
Do I have to elevate the bike?

Looks difficult but I will give it a try.

i keep having a problem with oil leaks from the primary. i had been thinking it was the drain plug. i replaced it and checked further, it leaks at primary gasket near drain plug, drips down on plug. has anyone else had this problem? can i double up on gaskets? or use silicone? there is no damage from prying. it leaks after it is hot from a ride. it leaves a drip trail into my garage. it is pissing me off. it has cost me a couple hundred dollars. HELP!!

The newest gaskets use a rubber bead, but nevertheless there shouldnt be a problem with any gasket you use. Are you using the torque sequence in the manual?

Yes, you can use any appropriate sealer you want.* Normal practice of making sure everything is clean. I prefer Permatex High Tack. If you use silicone make sure its dry before you fill and start. Overnight should do it.

I do wonder however if its actually draining from the clutch cable. Or is the cover cracked?

*You are correct in your assumption that its not okay to use sealer on some gaskets on the Blast. They are few.

i did torque in sequence, this leak has cost me hundreds. i did not realize where the leak came from. i kept thinking it was the drain plug, it is in the gasket area next to it. i am going to try silicone on it.

Then I would definitely let it sit, dry (empty), for at least 24 hours. When you put fluid back in (dont forget) ride it immediately till its hot. Then retorque in sequence (hot or cold).
If it leaks after that, then something is wrong.

PS Use a thread chaser or tap to clean out the all the bolt hole threads. Many of them will be corroded.

Hi Rusty7983

I would also flush out the threads with cleaner. I have some with dirt in them and they would bind and not seat all the way even though they are tight. It will also keep them from binding as they go in.
